This game doesn't matter one bit. Unless you're Tim Tebow, Matt Barkley, Jerome Couplin or Ed Reynolds. Or care about the Eagles depth.

Good Things

1. Raheem Mostert.

He looked like 2013 LeSean McCoy tonight, quick, shifty and excellent on passes out of the backfield (where he got most of his yards). It would be great if the Eagles could find room for both Mostert and Barner, but Raheem made it less likely tonight that he would clear waivers if Philly tries to put him on the practice squad.

Perhaps the team could trade one of the two for a good depth offensive lineman or outside linebacker. The Eagles were pumping him up a bit and I wonder if this was an effort to turn him into trade bait. The team barely played Barner after three great games, indicating that they've already placed him on the 53-man roster.

Either way, relish that first quarter Mostert, because that was the type of offense that Chip Kelly's Ducks ran at Oregon. Not a lot of long bombs, just run after run, 5 yards, 12 yards, maybe only two, then 38 or 62 for a touchdown because the plays are ripped off at lightning speed and very few defenses can take big run after big run. It's very fun when it's your team pulling that off.

2. Tim Tebow.

Yep, just when everyone had written him off and was wondering why Chip Kelly seemed so stubbornly determined to keep Tebow, the streaky lefty put together an impressive game, starting with a 24-yard completion to Mostert and several nicely executed screen passes (which Barkley was unable to match.)

More subtly, he led the Eagles' only first half touchdown drive (78 yards) by mixing great throws, screens and a bit of evasiveness. At one point, he narrowly evaded near-sacks on two consecutive plays, and scrambled for 17 yards on one of them (though he should have switched the ball to his sideline arm as he ran down field).

As before, Tebow came through when the pressure was the most intense. That's a great trait for a #3 QB, because any time he comes into a game will be high pressure by definition.

By all accounts, passing is Tebow's weakest skill, but when he came in for the fourth quarter he immediately threw a 45-yard bomb to Freddie Martino. FREDDIE MARTINO!!

He did throw an interception later on that drive, but 4th and 15 (due to penalties) throwing into traffic is a much tougher situation than the 2nd and 5, with a wide-open Huff, that Barkley gave away the ball on. Even on his one mistake the interception down to the 9 was a pretty effective punt inside the 10.

3. The return of Big Balls Kelly

Chip has been conservative since entering the NFL, in part because he couldn't be confident that if a fourth down attempt failed, his defense would stop the opponent from scoring. Tonight though he went for it on fourth down <strike>twice </strike>three times, even after the <strike>first</strike> second one failed. And the second resulted in a beautiful touchdown pass, with Tebow evading a blitz and hitting Martino again for a toe-dragging score on the very edge of the end zone.

The Eagles secondary was a horrible weakness last year, but if they improve half as much as they should (with six new DBs and highly-touted Cory Undlin as the new DBs coach), expect to see a lot more of Chip's ballsy play calls.

4. Special teams stay strong.

Mostert had a good return, the Eagles limited the Jets' returns, and even after Barkley got intercepted, the intended receiver (Josh Huff) stripped the ball out of the cornerback's arms. The ball was ruled down by contact but it was a great play by Huff. On top of that, Donnie Jones kicked a punt that was downed (caught actually by Seyi Ajirotutu) at the three.

5. The Legend of Kiko Alonso Begins

He only played the first series, and didn't have any highlight reel plays, but Eagles fans got to see the essence of Kiko. He's an incredibly intuitive player who is always around the ball. He will be the glue that pulls the different elements of this defense together.

Bad Things

1. Matt Barkley

Inaccurate and just plain bad. In a game that will decide (and probably just ended) his NFL career, he showed no leadership, field vision, creativity or elusiveness. He threw an interception on the second play from scrimmage, which unfortunately matched his pattern in the two NFL regular season games that he actually played in. And unlike Tebow, he was simply unable to execute (or possibly even see) a screen pass.

Tebow seems to improve under pressure, or some might say, he stinks except when the pressure's highest and he inexplicably gets good. In contrast, Barkley tends to fade under pressure. He did not do well in his two regular season appearances in 2013. By now, it's apparent that he has no untapped potential, and it's very hard to see what Barkley would add to this roster at all.

I would still prefer that the team cut both and use the roster slot for smoeone like Mostert, Rasheed Bailey or Seyi Ajirotutu, but if they decide to keep a 3rd QB it won't be Barkley.

2. The defensive line

As great as the starting line is, the second string DL was bad tonight. Zach Stacy ripped through the line, while the Birds got no pass rushing pressure on Matt Flynn whatsoever. Beau Allen did improve in the second half, though, as Tommy Lawlor noted.

3. Kip Smith

He missed two extra points and was dangerously low on the field goals he made. I understand the value of resting Cody Parkey as he heals, but having Smith kick a field goal in the first quarter when they arguably should have gone for it on fourth implies that the team wants him to get FG practice. If there is any chance whatsoever that Parkey may miss time (or be inaccurate) due to his long-running groin injury, the team needs to grab one of the decent kickers who loses his kicker competition -- just as they nabbed Parkey last year.

4. Eric Rowe.

People have been talking about Nolan Carroll taking over the nickel CB job so that second round draft pick Rowe could move outside as the starting cornerback opposite Byron Maxwell. After tonight, all of that talk stopped. Instead, discussion shifted to whether the Eagles should move Rowe back to safety, the position he played for most of his college career. I'm not quite ready to give up on him at CB quite yet, but his piss poor showing against the Jets' scrubs was a very bad sign.

5. Bad snaps

Centers David Molk and especially Julian Vandervelde made a number of bad snaps, complicating the competition between the two 3rd string QBs. (In this, too, Tebow adjusted better.) Even long snapper Jon Dorenbos, who is normally a machine, lost a bit of his magic with a low snap on the extra point that Kip Smith missed.

That's it for the dress rehearsal. The real show begins in 11 days. Don't miss it!

EDIT: H/T to PhilsForever for reminding me that Barkley completed a third 4th down attempt in the first half, before the two that Tebow ran.

Who played their way on to the Eagles' roster?

Thursday's 24-18 loss to the Jets in the preseason finale was the last chance for many Eagles players to state their case for a roster spot. And while some players struggled to make a mark, others put on performances that could have earned them jobs in the NFL. Let's take a look at the winners and losers of the 2015 preseason finale:

Winners

Raheem Mostert: If Mostert doesn't end up on the Eagles' practice squad, it will be because another team signed him to their active roster. Mostert looked like the best player on the field all night, rushing 15 times for 69 yards and catching eight passes for 93 yards. It remains to be seen whether the Eagles will try to keep Mostert in Philadelphia, but the former Purdue Boilermaker likely earned himself a job in the NFL Thursday.

Tim Tebow: That's right, folks. Tim Tebow just played himself on to the Eagles' roster. His overall numbers - 11/17 for 189 yards, two touchdowns and an interception - were fine. But his two touchdowns were things of beauty. Tebow has a knack for showing up when it matters most, and Thursday was no exception.

Kiko Alonso: After more than a full season out of football, Alonso had to feel good getting back on the field. Alonso only played one series against fringe NFL players, but he was credited with two tackles and was around the ball on just about every play. Thursday night was more about knocking some rust off, so in that respect, Alonso comes out a winner.

Freddie Martino: The former Falcons wideout only had two catches for 54 yards in the game, but boy did he make them count. Both were touchdowns, including a simply incredible one-handed sideline grab. It's not likely that Martino makes the Eagles, but if it is the end of the road for him, what an end it was.

Eagles fans: The preseason is over! The Eagles' next opponent will be the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football.

Losers

Matt Barkley: In a game that could essentially mean the difference between playing in the NFL and being on the outside looking in, Barkley didn't do much. He finished the night 4/9 for 45 yards and an interception, including a pick on his first throw of the game. The Eagles have been looking to move on from Barkley for some time now, and it looks like they won't have to wait much longer.

Eagles run defense: It wasn't a banner day for the team's run defense. The Jets finished the game with 215 yards on the ground, including 72 yards and a touchdown by Chris Owusu. Granted, most of these players won't make any NFL roster, let alone the Eagles'. But it was still not the most inspired performance.

Eric Rowe: Don't panic, but Rowe had his worst outing as a professional on Thursday night. The caveat here is that it was only his fourth game in the NFL. Moving Rowe to corner was always going to take some time, and this game was a demonstration of why.

Rowe was beaten several times, and as analyst Mike Mayock pointed out during the broadcast, was unable to consistently stick with his man. It'll take time for Rowe to improve his game, though Thursday night wasn't what most fans wanted to see out of their second round pick.

Jaylen Watkins: Like Rowe, Watkins had an up-and-down outing. He gave up a long touchdown in the first quarter, and was generally inconsistent. Unlike Rowe, Watkins doesn't have the advantage of being an early-round draft pick. Watkins could still make the team, but the more likely outcome is either a spot on the practice squad--or off the squad entirely.

The Philadelphia Eagles were defeated by the New York Jets on Thursday evening in their fourth and final 2015 preseason game.

The Philadelphia Eagles were defeated by the New York Jets by a final score of 24 to 18 in the preseason finale. With the loss, the Eagles dropped to 3-1 in the 2015 NFL preseason schedule. Not that it matters.

Eagles quarterbacks

Matt Barkley: 4 for 9 (44.4%), 45 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT, 20.4 rating

Tim Tebow: 11 for 17 (64.7%), 189 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT, 117.0 rating (32 rush yards on 4 attempts)

Barkley and Tebow each got a half of playing time as they alternated quarters. Neither player had much to work with in terms of offensive line or receiving options, but Tebow clearly outplayed Barkley. Tebow's stats would look better had he not had to deal with two drops. Tebow showed mobility to escape pressure whereas Barkley would just get sacked. Tebow was also more accurate with his passes, believe it or not. Watch Tebow's first touchdown throw here.

First half observations

Starting Eagles offensive line from left to right: Matt Tobin, Josh Andrews, David Molk, John Moffitt, Dennis Kelly.

Barkley underthrew a wide open Huff on the second play of the game and it was picked. What a terrible pass. Huff did a great job of stripping the ball out, but it wasn't ruled a fumble. Nice effort from the wide receiver.

Kiko Alonso started with the first team defense next to rookie Jordan Hicks. Eric Rowe and E.J. Biggers started at outside cornerback with Chris Maragos and Ed Reynolds starting at safety. Alonso made a few tackles and looked good. He only played one series.

Jaylen Watkins got beaten over the top in coverage. Burned. Bad look.

Raheem Mostert looked good running the ball on the Eagles' second drive. Barkley overthrew two passes in a row but then finally connected with Trey Burton and Mostert. Eagles had to settle for a field goal. Kip Smith, not Cody Parkey, made the short kick.

Eric Rowe got called for illegal hands to the face while trying to cover a Jets receiver. Later, Rowe fell down and left his man wide open. Then he gave up another catch. Not a great look for the rookie.

Tim Tebow time! The quarterback hit Mostert for a first down on a pass floated over two rushing defenders. Tebow hit Seyi Ajirotutu with a good throw after rolling out but the veteran dropped it. Tebow's next two passes went a little high.

Ajirotutu did a good job of catching a punt to pin the Jets deep in their own territory.

Watkins read Matt Flynn like a book, jumped a route, and got the pick. He needed that one. Very nice play.

Mostert stuffed on three runs on the inside near the goal line.

Bryan Braman blew by the Jets' right tackle and destroyed Flynn. Beast.

Jeff Maehl dropped a good pass from Tebow over the middle in a tight window.

Rowe made a great play on special teams as the gunner. He ran by his two blockers and ran down the field to force a fair catch.

Tebow spun out of a sack and ran 17 yards for a first round. Then he delivered a few good strikes to Mostert and Quron Pratt to put the team in field goal range. Tebow hit Rasheed Bailey in the end zone for a touchdown. Great pass. Nice catch by the rookie, too.

Second half observations

Randall Evans was beat without ever looking up for the ball but got bailed out when the Jets receiver was called for a weak pushoff.

Najee Goode did a good job of rushing in and batting down a Josh Johnson pass. If Goode doesn't make the team, he'll find a job with some NFL team.

Tebow hit Freddie Martino with a great deep ball. The pass was slightly underthrown, but not too bad. Then Tebow gets picked off when trying to force a pass into coverage on 4th-and-16. Tough spot.

Bailey caught a screen and fought through some defenders to pick up a first down.

4th-and-6 in the red zone ... Tebow escaped a sack, scrambled to his left, and hit Freddie Martino in the end zone for an amazing touchdown. Seriously, what a catch. Martino somehow pinned the ball to his helmet and kept two feet as he fell out of bounds. Wow.

Injuries

Jerome Couplin got shaken up on special teams but returned to the game.

Up next: NFL roster cuts

No more Eagles training camp. No more Eagles preseason games. The 2015 NFL regular season starts is right around the corner! The Eagles play their first game against the Falcons on Monday, Sept. 14 at 7:10 p.m. ET in Atlanta.

Before that arrives, however, the Eagles (and 31 other NFL teams) will be required to trim their roster down to 53 players by Saturday, Sept. 5 at 4:00 PM EST. Cuts are expected to take place as soon as Friday, so stay tuned here to Bleeding Green Nation for complete coverage.

At least two of Philadelphia's key players are active for the Eagles vs. New York Jets game on Thursday night.

According to the team, Kiko Alonso is active. Alonso was also "active" last week but didn't actually suit up. It's expected the Eagles linebacker will make his debut for real this time around, but there's still no guarantee. It's unclear how long Alonso will play, if at all, but one could figure he will see a series or two or three if he does suit up.

Second-year wide receiver Josh Huff is also active after missing the Packers game last Saturday. Huff has only been targeted twice this summer so this could be a good opportunity for him to get more looks in the passing attack.

Second-year kicker Cody Parkey is also active, but it's unclear if he's healthy enough to play. The fact that the Eagles didn't waive backup punter/kicker Kip Smith earlier this week seems to indicate Parkey might not be 100% yet.

Here are the 27 players who are not expected to play. Most of them are starters/key players. It's at least a little interesting to see first round pick Nelson Agholor inactive. That seems to bode well for him.
