The Players

Malcolm Jenkins, Walter Thurmond, Earl Wolff, Chris Maragos, Chris Prosinski, Ed Reynolds, Jerome Couplin, (Jaylen Watkins)

The Eagles are pretty screwed at safety if Malcolm Jenkins goes down. The 27-year-old veteran is the only clear, proven starter on the back end. Jenkins got off to a great start in 2014 before slowing down towards the end of the year, but he was mostly solid throughout. He's also a respected voice on the field and in the locker room. Jenkins isn't a star but he's at least an above average starting safety.

Philadelphia tried to pair Jenkins with Devin McCourty this offseason but the free agent defensive back decided to take less money to re-sign with the New England Patriots. With McCourty off the table, the Eagles' options were limited. And so now Walter Thurmond, who has never played safety at any level of football in his life, is projected to start next to Jenkins. There's actually reason to believe the move might work out. Thurmond is a talented player with good coverage skills. He looked great during the team's non-contact spring practices. On the downside, his lack of experience could catch up with him in a game setting. He's also extremely injury prone.

Chip Kelly doesn't seem to be the biggest fan of Earl Wolff. The Eagles coach made it clear Wolff was holding himself out of practice this spring. There's certainly room for the 25-year-old Wolff to step up at safety and win a job. It just doesn't seem likely, however. He's had issues staying healthy. He's not the best special teams player so his value as a backup is limited as well. Wolff showed a brief glimpse of promise as a rookie in 2013 but he hasn't done much since then. He's not guaranteed a roster spot by any means.

Chris Maragos is one of the best special teams player in the NFL. Maragos led the Eagles in special teams tackles with 14 last year. The problem with Maragos is that he's an ideal long-term starter at safety.

Chris Prosinski was a really underrated addition by the Eagles last year. He finished fourth in special teams tackles despite only playing in eight games. Prosinski started nine games in his career with the Jaguars but he struggled. Like Maragos, he's a good special teams player but not a great option as a starting safety.

Ed Reynolds spent last season on Philadelphia's practice squad despite being selected in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. The Stanford safety was at a disadvantage last summer since he missed the team's spring practices. This time around Reynolds will be more familiar with the scheme and better adjusted to the NFL. He could be in the mix to compete for a backup spot.

Jerome Couplin is a bit of an intriguing player due to the fact the Eagles stole him off the Lions' practice squad late last season. Kelly praised Couplin during spring practices. The 6-2, 215 pound 23-year-old is also in the mix for a backup safety spot.

Jaylen Watkins was already discussed in the Eagles cornerback preview, but he's worth mentioning here since he also took some third string safety reps during the spring. One would figure Watkins has a better shot to make the team at safety than cornerback.

How will it play out?

Jenkins is obviously locked in as one starter. It seems safe to say Thurmond is pretty locked in as the starter next to him. As previously mentioned, Thurmond had a very strong spring. Kelly also went out of his way to praise the former Oregon player (Duck Bias!).

Maragos and Prosinski will probably be back. Kelly really, really values special teams. Don't dismiss that fact. Prosinski also has some game experience, so that works in his favor.

The Eagles only kept four safeties in 2014 after carrying five on the final roster in 2015. There's no guarantee a fifth spot will be made available. It's up to Wolff, Reynolds, or Couplin (and possibly Watkins) to step up and make a case for themselves.

Who could be a surprise cut?

I left off Wolff in some of my 53-man roster projections earlier this offseason. Some people seemed surprised by that. Don't be.

The Players

Byron Maxwell, Nolan Carroll, Eric Rowe, Brandon Boykin, JaCorey Shepherd, Jaylen Watkins, E.J. Biggers, Randall Evans, Denzel Rice

The Eagles made Byron Maxwell their top target at cornerback in free agency and they got their man. Maxwell didn't come cheap, but the Eagles were very desperate for cornerback help. Philadelphia's corners have been an obvious point of weakness in recent history and Maxwell is here to help fix that. The former Seahawks defensive back really fits what Philadelphia likes in their defensive backs. He's tall at 6-1 and his 34 inch arms are very long. Maxwell did a good job covering NFC East receivers last season: he was targeted only five times and allowed two receptions for 68 yards and no touchdowns. Now Maxwell will be tasked with defending the likes of Dez Bryant, DeSean Jackson, and Odell Beckham Jr. on a more regular basis.

The starting cornerback job across from Maxwell is up for grabs. It's safe to say veteran Nolan Carroll is the early favorite to win the competition. Carroll took the bulk of first team reps during the spring. Chip Kelly and Eagles players alike have raved about how Carroll has had a great offseason. It's a little curious that Carrollseems like such a sure starter after the Eagles wouldn't play him over Bradley Fletcher last season, but that seems to be how things are going. Carroll has looked good in practice. Now he needs to show up in games.

The Eagles are clearly high on Eric Rowe. The team traded up for the Utah defensive back in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Rowe has the versatility to play both safety and cornerback, but the Eagles seem intent on first giving him a shot on the outside. Rowe could steal the starting job away from Carroll if he has a strong summer.

Brandon Boykin enters the last year of his rookie contract poised to be the team's starting nickel corner yet again. Boykin did get some first team reps at outside cornerback this spring, but it's hard to believe the team will give him a real chance to start on the outside until we see it. Boykin is currently the longest-tenured cornerback on Philadelphia's roster. It remains to be seen if he's in the team's long-term plans.

If Boykin isn't in the long-term plans, the Eagles may have his replacement on the roster. Rookie cornerback JaCorey Shepherd was considered by many "draft experts" to be one of the biggest steals in this year's draft. Shepherd spent time shadowing Boykin during formation drills this spring. The Kansas alumnus isn't the best athlete but he has incredibly savvy ball skills. He recorded 30 pass breakups in college to go with five interceptions. Shepherd looked pretty good during spring practices.

Jaylen Watkins is in a weird spot. The 2014 fourth round pick didn't play much as a rookie. He made a nice play against the Giants during Philadelphia's Week 17 finale but was otherwise torched by Beckham Jr. Watkins has been lining up at both corner and safety this spring. One would figure the team could use him more at safety, but he hasn't received any first team reps there. Watkins really needs to show something this summer.

E.J. Biggers is arguably one of the most forgettable players on the roster. It's hard to remember he's on the team. The veteran really struggled in Washington. He has some versatility to play cornerback and safety, but he hasn't been too good at either spot. At the least, he can provide some veteran competition this summer.

Rookie Randall Evans could find himself contributing as a nickel or a dime cornerback. He's not necessarily guaranteed a roster spot so perhaps he might end up on the practice squad.

Denzel Rice was the Eagles' lowest ranked undrafted free agent per CBS Sports. He's a long shot.

How will it play out?

Maxwell and Carroll are likely the starters. Rowe could rotate in at some point or get a shot if Carroll struggles. Boykin will likely be the team's nickel cornerback. Shepherd might be in the mix for some playing time at some position as well. The Eagles only keep five or six cornerbacks so Watkins, Evans, Biggers, and Rice could be competing for one spot.

Who could be a surprise cut?

It would be a little surprising to see the Eagles give up on Watkins after only one season. Then again, one could theorize he was more of a "Howie Roseman pick" in last year's class. Roseman's Florida bias may have been in play there. Like I said earlier, Watkins needs to show something this summer.

Seeing Evans get cut might be a surprise to some since he was a draft pick. The Eagles cut Ed Reynolds after drafting him in the fifth round last year, however, before he ended up on the practice squad. Evans might find himself in a similar situation.

The Players

Connor Barwin, Brandon Graham, Bryan Braman, Marcus Smith, Travis Long, Jordan Dewalt-Ondijo

Connor Barwin is the man. Not only is he a good player but he also makes great contributions off the field as well. Barwin likely won't repeat the 14.5 sack performance he had in 2014, but he'll still be a valuable member of Philadelphia's defense. He's everything the Eagles want in an outside linebacker: he can rush the passer, set the edge against the run, and drop into coverage.

Starting opposite of Barwin is Brandon Graham. For the first time in his career, Graham is entering an NFL season as a full-time starter. Graham's career path to this point has been very strange. Many thought the former first round pick wouldn't even return to the Eagles this offseason, but now he's a key member of the defense. Graham has excelled as a pass rusher during limited playing time the past two seasons. According to Pro Football Focus, Graham finished as the NFL's best pass rusher last season in their proprietary "Pass Rush Productivity" stat. He generated six sacks, eight quarterback hits, and 37 hurries in just 225 pass rush snaps played. It remains to be seen if Graham can still be effective now that he will be expected to play a lot more snaps. There are also concerns about Graham's ability to drop into coverage.

While Barwin and Graham are locked in as the starters at outside linebacker, the depth behind them is unsettled. 2014 first round pick Marcus Smith is coming off a disappointing season where he only played a total of 105 snaps. Smith should have an opportunity to step up into Graham's old role rotating in off the bench, but he has to earn that playing time. The Eagles gave Smith some first team snaps during spring practices so they're clearly not writing him off yet. Call me crazy, but I can envision Smith succeeding in a Barwin role one day. He's not the most gifted pass rusher (like Barwin), but he's athletic (like Barwin) and he can drop into coverage (like Barwin). Smith might not ever be as good as Barwin, but he potentially fits that mold.

Bryan Braman is a beast of a special teams player. There are only three words you need to know about him: "Kill. Maim. Destroy." He's a lock to make the roster, especially after receiving a one-year contract extension this offseason.

Returning to the team for the third summer in a row is Travis Long. The Eagles have been high on him in the past. He spent the entire 2013 season on the practice squad. It looked like Long might earn a roster spot last year prior to suffering a season-ending ACL injury in the final preseason game. Long is another player in the Barwin mold. He's not so much a dominant pass rusher as he is an athletic player who can set the edge and cover. Long could push for a roster spot, especially if he shows up on special teams. His versatility to play at inside linebacker and at defensive end could help him avoid a numbers crunch at outside linebacker.

Jordan Dewalt-Ondijo is an undrafted rookie free agent. He's a long shot with some pass rush ability.

How will it play out?

Barwin and Graham are locks to start. Barwin played 94% of the team's defensive snaps in 2013 and 87% in 2014 so he'll probably be around the 90% mark. As for Graham, his role could be a little more limited. Trent Cole only played about 70% of the team's defensive snaps each of the past two seasons. Graham will likely take over that role while Smith could inherit Graham's old role of playing about 30% of the team's snaps as a rotational player.

Who could be a surprise cut?

It's hard to say Smith's job is 100% safe if he doesn't show anything this summer. Cutting Smith wouldn't make much sense from a financial perspective, however. The Eagles would actually lose over $3 million in cap space by parting ways with him now.

The Players

Kiko Alonso, Mychal Kendricks, DeMeco Ryans, Jordan Hicks, Najee Goode, Brad Jones, Emmanuel Acho, Brandon Hepburn

Who starts at inside linebacker for the Eagles remains to be seen. Kiko Alonso and Mychal Kendricks are clearly Philadelphia's two most talented inside linebackers. They're both young, athletic players with serious playmaking ability. They could combine to form one of the NFL's most beastly inside linebacker duos.

But it doesn't seem that simple. The Eagles gave DeMeco Ryans a one-year contract extension this offseason for a reason: the team still values his leadership his ability. Players rave about Ryans in the locker room. The veteran's ability to organize the defense can be seen on the field. The main issue with Ryans, however, is the fact he's coming off an Achilles injury suffered last season. It's the second of his career. That's not a good look for any player, let alone one who is turning 31 years old.

Eagles coaches have said they can get Alonso, Kendricks, and Ryans on the field together all at once, but obviously that won't be happening on a regular basis. There are only two full-time spots to fill and three players to fill them. Someone will be coming off the bench at some point. While it would seem like Ryans is best suited for the bench role, the Eagles seem to be less high on Kendricks than most. The team was reportedly shopping him prior to the NFL Draft. The Eagles have not yet approached Kendricks about a contract extension despite being able to do so.

Despite this seeming lack of favor, Kendricks took first team repetitions during spring practice. Maybe the fact that Ryans wasn't 100% factored in there. In any case, it'll be interested to see how this rotation works.

No matter how the Eagles linebacker situation plays out, one thing is for sure: this year's depth is way better than last year's. Philadelphia was absolutely ravaged by injuries on the inside last season. The Eagles have done their best to make sure that won't happen again. The team drafted Texas linebacker Jordan Hicks in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He isn't likely to make any immediate contributions, save for special teams, but he's an athletic player with good leadership skills. He will serve as a depth player in the short term while being groomed to be an eventual starter.

Other players competing for spots on the inside including Najee Goode, Brad Jones, Emmanuel Acho, and Brandon Hepburn. Goode looked like a capable backup in 2013 while filling in for an injured Kendricks. Goode also played well on special teams. Former Packers linebacker Jones is also a good special teams player. Jones also has the versatility to play outside linebacker, which could help him earn a roster spot. Acho also spent some time during the spring working at outside linebacker. It won't help him make the team, but it absolutely needs to be noted that Acho is easily one of the best tweeters on the Eagles. Hepburn spent most of the 2014 season on Philadelphia's practice squad. He's likely a camp body.

How will it play out?

I saw a recent suggestion that Alonso and Ryans could be the "starters" while Kendricks ultimately ends up with more playing time than Ryans. Maybe that's the case. There has to be some kind of rotation going on here.

Behind those three, Hicks is obviously a lock to make the team. Goode and Jones could be competing against each other for one depth spot.

Who could be a surprise cut?

It wouldn't be a total shock to see the Eagles trade Kendricks. At this point, however, I think there's a better chance he plays out the season with Philadelphia.

Seeing Goode get cut would be a little surprising. The team has been high on him in the past, but Jones could steal his job.

The Players

DE: Fletcher Cox, Cedric Thornton, Vinny Curry, Brandon Bair, Taylor Hart, Brian Mihalik, Frank Mays, Travis Raciti, B.J. McBryde

NT: Bennie Logan, Beau Allen, Wade Keliikipi

Philadelphia's two-gap 3-4 defensive line sets the stage for the defense's overall success. The Eagles are very young and talented up front.

Fletcher Cox is obviously the star of this unit. The 24-year-old is entering his fourth season. To put it simply: he's a beast. The stats don't always show the true impact that Cox makes on defense. His ability to both generate pressure and stop the run is invaluable. Cox's ability to dominate the line of scrimmage allowed Connor Barwin to have such a huge season last year with 14.5 sacks. Barwin will even admit it. Cox is a terror for opposing offenses to deal with.

The 27-year-old Cedric Thornton has carved out a nice career for himself after originally joining the Eagles as an undrafted free agent. Thornton doesn't possess dominant pass rushing ability but he's the perfect run-stopping two-gap 3-4 defensive end. The man nicknamed "Swamp" might not get credit since he's not a flashy player but he's also important to the defense.

Starting nose tackle Bennie Logan quieted all of his doubters with a very solid showing last season. Logan led all nose/defensive tackles in tackles with 44. He doesn't generate much pressure but he's very solid against the run.

Vinny Curry is a dynamite pass rusher. While he might not be seen as a perfect fit for Philadelphia's defense, Curry has still produced off the bench. Last year he had nine sacks and 21 hurries on a mere 294 pass rush snaps. The Eagles are seemingly trying to get Curry more involved in the defense by experimenting with him at outside linebacker.

Brandon Bair surprised most by making the final roster last season. Though he's only played one full season in the NFL, he's going to turn 31 this fall. He didn't really stand out either way as a rotational backup defensive end, but he did add value on special teams. The 6-6 Bair blocked two kicks last year.

2014 fifth round pick Taylor Hart returns to the Eagles after essentially redshirting in 2014. The former Oregon player has reportedly gained 25 pounds since last year. Additional strength could help him better push for not only a roster spot but actual playing time as well.

Brian Mihalik is the team's seventh round pick from the 2015 NFL Draft. He's tall at 6-9 and a great athlete for his size, but he clearly needs to gain some strength. Frank Mays spent some time with the team in camp last year. Travis Raciti and B.J. McBryde are undrafted free agents. From this group, Mihalik seems like the favorite to land on the practice squad.

Beau Allen is likely to reprise his role as the team's backup nose tackle behind Logan. Wade Keliikipi might stick around on the practice squad like he did last year.

How will it play out?

Cox and Thornton will be the starters at defensive end with Logan starting in the middle. Curry might rotate in a little more often than he did last year but it's hard to see him earning a full-time role because he's not the best defender against the run. Allen should rotate in for Logan at times.

Bair and Hart are fighting for a roster spot and/or rotational playing time. It would be ideal for the team to see the 24-year-old Hart beat out the aged Bair.

Who could be a surprise cut?

Hart could be cut if he doesn't step up or show progress. Otherwise, there shouldn't be too many surprises at this position.

The Players

Starters

Left tackle: Jason Peters
Left guard: Allen Barbre
Center: Jason Kelce
Right guard: Matt Tobin (?)
Right tackle: Lane Johnson

Jason Peters, Jason Kelce, and Lane Johnson are locked in as starters. Peters is now 33 years old but the future Hall of Famer is still playing at a very high level. Jason Kelce is arguably one of the best centers in the league. His athleticism makes him a great fit for Kelly's offense. Lane Johnson is now entering his third year in the NFL. Johnson has been training hard this offseason to make the jump from good starter to elite tackle. These three Eagles players are studs.

Philadelphia's guards are not studs. Instead, they are questions marks. Evan Mathis and Todd Herremans are now gone and their replacements are largely unproven.

Allen Barbre seems like the favorite to start at left guard. The Eagles are really high on him for some reason. It's weird because the 31-year-old veteran struggled when he was a starter with the Packers back in 2009, but maybe things have changed since then. Barbre joined the team in 2013 so at least he has experience in the system, for whatever that's worth.

Matt Tobin could be the favorite to start at right guard. The team has been high on him since he made the roster as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2013. Tobin struggled when forced into action last season before eventually being benched. However, Tobin may not have been 100% healthy. Recall that he suffered a really bad high-ankle injury late in the preseason before returning to football only about a month later. Tobin was also transitioning from tackle to guard last season. Getting healthy and having experience on the inside could help him moving forward. Still, Tobin isn't exactly a lock to be a starter at this point.

Depth

OT: Andrew Gardner, Dennis Kelly, Kevin Graf

OG: John Moffitt, Josh Andrews, Brett Boyko, Malcolm Bunche, Jared Wheeler

C: David Molk, Julian Vandervelde, Mike Coccia

With Tobin not being a lock to start, there's something of an open competition at right guard. Andrew Gardner took reps with the first team at times during spring practices. Gardner didn't look great last season when he was forced to play tackle but he looked more serviceable at right guard when replacing Tobin. He's probably an average starter at best, however.

John Moffitt is an interesting addition to the Eagles' offensive line. The 28-year-old hasn't played in the NFL since retiring in 2013. Moffitt has seemingly overcome his demons and worked really hard to get back into playing shape. For what it's worth, Moffitt didn't grade out favorably by Pro Football Focus during his time with the Seahawks. Maybe Moffitt can experience a late career revival like Evan Mathis once did with the Eagles. If not, Moffitt should at least serve as healthy competition for the right guard spot.

Dennis Kelly is still around. The Eagles staff doesn't seem to favor him all that much. Kelly was only played when the team really needed him early on last season. Otherwise, he was kept inactive on game day.

Former USC offensive lineman Kevin Graf spent most of 2014 on the practice squad. The Eagles called him up to the main roster for a brief stint but he was never made active. Graf is a sleeper to watch this summer. Chip Kelly has mentioned him several times, unprompted, as one of the players competing for the right guard spot. Graf is hardly a favorite to win the competition but he could earn a roster spot as a backup.

David Molk spent last year as the team's top backup center. The undersized lineman struggled when he was first thrown into action but he seemed to improve with experience before Kelce ultimately returned. The thing working against Molk is his lack of versatility. He doesn't really have the size or experience to play guard, or at least in the team's eyes, it seems.

Josh Andrews survived the first round of cuts before being waived in the final round last summer. He spent the entire season on the practice squad. He's mainly a guard but has the versatility to play center as well.

Julian Vandervelde has bounce on and off the Eagles many times since first being drafted by the team in 2011. The Eagles seem to like his ability to play at both guard and center.

Jared Wheeler was added the Eagles shortly after the team released Evan Mathis. He might be a camp body to have around.

Undrafted rookie free agents Brett Boyko and Malcolm Bunche are competing for depth spots at guard. Boyko graded out favorably in college according to PFF. Bunche has some familiarity with Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland. Fellow undrafted rookie free agent is a local kid who grew up rooting for the Eagles. Now he's trying to earn a spot as a backup center/guard type. These rookies could also be fighting for a practice squad contract.

How will it play out?

The starting offensive line is set except for the right guard spot. While I'm still high on Tobin, I think Moffitt could certainly challenge for the job.

The Eagles kept nine offensive lineman to start the season last year, so let's predict they will keep four backups behind the five starters. The loser of the potential Tobin/Moffitt battle should be one of the top backups. Gardner seems like a good bet to stick around. I'll pencil in Molk to return despite his lack of versatility. I'll give the final spot to Graf, with Andrews and Boyko making the practice squad.

Who could be a surprise cut?

If you want to consider Dennis Kelly a surprise cut, then I guess you could say him. It's worth noting Moffitt isn't necessarily a lock to make the team. He'll be new to the system and his contract doesn't include any guaranteed money.

If anything, there could be a surprise addition. Maybe the Eagles keep one of their undrafted free agent rookies on the active roster.

The Players

Zach Ertz, Brent Celek, Trey Burton, Justin Tukes, Eric Tomlinson, Andrew Gleichert

"Zach Ertz is ready to have a breakout year" is already a headline you read last offseason. After putting up impressive stats as a rookie, many thought Ertz was going to bust out as a stud in 2014. While Ertz didn't look bad by any means during his sophomore campaign, he didn't quite make the leap many expected. Part of the reason why Ertz was held back was due to the presence of Brent Celek. The Eagles' offensive line was in shambles and his blocking skills were arguably as important as ever. The problem with relying on Celek too much, however, is that he's no longer much of a big threat as a pass catcher.

Heading into 2015, Ertz might be closing the gap on Celek. The third-year tight end seems to be training harder than ever this offseason. He's sought out advice from one of the best tight ends ever to play in the NFL, Tony Gonzalez. He's also worked on his blocking with former legendary Dallas Cowboys offensive line coach Hudson Houck. Philadelphia tight end coach Justin Peelle noted that he already sees improvement in Ertz's blocking, which could potentially lead to more playing time. Blocking will be as important as ever to the Eagles in 2015 if the team is truly committed to getting back to the run game. Celek has had the advantage over Ertz in the past. It's up to Ertz to overtake the veteran.

Ertz had a very good showing this spring. He got open often and he caught nearly everything thrown his way. He was the favorite target of most quarterbacks, but especially Sam Bradford. That's good news for Ertz considering Bradford is likely going to be the starter.

Behind Ertz and Celek used to be James Casey, who played a few offensive snaps here and there a game. The team valued his ability as a blocker. With Casey gone, it's up to versatile backup Trey Burton to assume a bigger role. Burton really impressed last year on special teams. He's not the blocker Casey was but he does offer more as pass catcher. It's safe to say Burton is locked in as the third tight end.

The Eagles haven't been shy to keep four tight ends on their roster in the past. They did it for the first few weeks of 2013 before then doing it for all of 2014. Kelly has said in the past that he wants to "stockpile" tight ends. The Eagles currently have undrafted free agent rookies Justin Tukes, Eric Tomlinson, and Andrew Gleichert battling it out for a fourth spot. None of them might be good enough to make the roster, but one could earn practice squad consideration.

The Eagles might look to add a fourth tight end via the waiver wire should someone they like spring available after final cuts.

How will it play out?

From what I wrote earlier this offseason: "Ertz jumped from playing 40.8% of the team's offensive snaps in 2013 to 49.9% in 2014 while Celek dropped from 76.5% in 2013 to 69.3% last season. I could see those 2014 numbers getting a little bit closer in 2015, but I think Celek will still have the edge." Ertz sure has the potential to overtake Celek, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Meanwhile, Burton will make the team as a third tight end. The team won't be shy to keep a fourth player if he deserves it.

Who could be a surprise cut?

Nobody here. Based on what I've seen so far, it would be a bit of a surprise to see if one the undrafted rookie free agents earned a spot.

Speaking of cuts, Celek is safe for now but this could be his last year with the Eagles. He's due $5 million after this season and none of that money is guaranteed.

Kinne

The Eagles' biggest loss this offseason was seeing Jeremy Maclin sign with the Kansas City Chiefs. Maclin had 85 receptions for 1,318 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2014. That's a lot of production to replace.

The good news is that the Eagles have some talented young players waiting in the wings (no pun intended) to step up. Jordan Matthews only recently 23 and he's coming off a bright rookie season. Matthews finished with 67 receptions for 872 yards and eight touchdowns in 2014. Most of Matthews' production came from the slot position. Matthews suggested he might play more at the outside receiver position this season, which might be true, but he still took a lot of reps on the inside during spring practice. For now, pencil him in as the team's starting slot receiver once again.

The much-maligned Riley Cooper returns to the Eagles in 2015 after arguably being the NFL's worst starting receiver last season. Most expected Cooper's production to regress in 2014 after a career 2013 performance, but I'm not sure if anyone expected him to be as bad as he really was. Perhaps the ankle injury he suffered last summer was partially to blame. In any event, Cooper needs to be better in order to deserve the kind of playing time he received last year. One thing that could work in Cooper's favor is his vaunted blocking skills. With the Eagles looking to get back to running the ball more often, Cooper could at least provide some value in that role.

Cooper's struggles last season should ideally cost him playing time this season. If that's the case, 23-year-old Josh Huff might be ready to step up and steal it for himself. Huff was a disaster at times as a rookie, but he also showed some flashes of talent in very limited playing time. Huff is apparently looking "shredded and a lot more explosive" heading into Year 2, which is good news if true. Huff is a fun player to watch after the catch due to his tough running style. He'll fight through contact and take it head on. He's just as ferocious when he blocks, which should also help him earn playing time.

If Huff fails to step up, the addition of rookie first round pick Nelson Agholor could be all that more important. Agholor really impressed in spring practices with his ability to snag the ball in the air. He moves really well in space, too. Agholor has the versatility to play on the inside or outside. He might not be a full-time starter right away but he should see his fair share of playing time.

Miles Austin is on the team. That's still weird, but it seems like the Eagles value his #veteranpresence. The 31-year-old turned in a decent season with the Browns last year, especially considering Cleveland's horrid quarterback situation. He had a respectable 47 receptions for 568 yards and two touchdowns. He was a surprisingly efficient target. Considering the Eagles gave Austin $1 million guaranteed, I guess they envision some kind of role where he rotates in on offense. It doesn't seem to make much sense to keep him strictly as a depth receiver since he hasn't played special teams in years, though he said he's wiling to do so.

Seyi Ajirotutu was a solid pickup by the Eagles this offseason. He's basically an upgraded version of Brad Smith, except with a cooler name. He even took Smith's old No. 16 jersey. Ajirotutu led the Chargers' special teams unit in tackles the past two seasons. He also looked pretty decent in spring practices this year. He should be a lock to make the roster as a depth player and special teams ace.

With the aforementioned six wide receivers looking like roster locks, the remaining six are on the outside looking in. Jeff Maehl is still around after making the roster the past two seasons. This summer could be his last with the team. Quron Pratt spent last season on the practice squad. Undrafted free agents Rasheed Bailey, Devante Davis, and John Harris could be competing for a spot (or two) on the practice squad this year. Bailey, an alumnus of Division III football Delaware Valley, arguably had the best spring of those players. He's not flashy but he could project as a productive possession guy in the future. G.J. Kinne made the transition from quarterback to wide receiver this offseason. He's on pace to be the best pass catcher in NFL history.

How will it play out?

Matthews, Huff, Agholor, Cooper, Austin, and Ajirotutu appear to be locks. That's easy to figure out. The hard part is figuring out how often they'll play. Matthews seems like a sure bet in the slot. After that, there are questions. Will Cooper's playing time be reduced? Will Huff's playing time increase? How big of a role will Agholor have? How does Austin fit in? Only time will tell.

When it comes to the undrafted guys, I'll pencil in Pratt and Bailey as the guys who make the practice squad. That could easily change depending on how the rookies perform this summer.

Kinne will also draw practice squad consideration due to his ability and willingness to line up at other offensive positions such as quarterback and running back.

Who could be a surprise cut?

If the Eagles were going to move on from Riley Cooper, they would have already made that decision by now. He's more expensive to cut than to keep so he probably isn't going anywhere. Miles Austin was guaranteed $1 million, but maybe the Eagles will be willing to eat that if one of the undrafted rookies really step ups and blows the coaches away.
