This fine was to be expected. Peters went after Baker following Baker's cheap-shot hit on Nick Foles during a play where it appeared Washington intercepted the ball (but really didn't, because the interception was just an incomplete pass). Here's video of Peters charging at Baker. Peters' actions further caused a brawl to break out near Washington's sideline. Peters and Baker would both be ejected from the game.

After the game, Baker said he did not regret the hit. He thought it was legal. Peters, like Baker, did not regret his actions. "I'd do it again," Peters said. And asked if Baker tried to pull the same thing again, as Baker implied he would do, Peters said, "He's gonna get the same result."

The NFL later ruled the hit was legal, which doesn't really make sense unless you truly believe Foles had established a 'distinct defensive position', per the NFL rulebook. Evidence even proves that Foles was not first contacted until the play was actually over.

Huh?

Well, apparently Chris Baker's hit on Nick Foles wasn't illegal after all. At least that's according to what the NFL had to say. Read this quote from the NFL's executive vice president of football operations (and former Eagles player) Troy Vincent, via the Washington Post.

"Baker didn’t do anything wrong with that hit. When you look at the rule, he didn’t do anything illegal. People can say it’s a cheap shot and you can talk about whether it might fall under unsportsmanlike conduct. But when you know the rule and you look at the play, he didn’t hit him in the head. He didn’t hit him in the neck. We looked at it. I looked at it very closely. He’s not going to be fined for that."

OK, so I get what Vincent is saying about the head/neck thing. That's defined here in Article 9, Section (b)

But what I still don't get is this point from "Passer out of the play"

It clearly states the passer must not be unnecessarily contacted by the defense through the end of the play, until the passer assumes a distinctly defensive position. How did Foles assume a distinctly defensive position?

Especially when he was contacted by Baker after Bashaud Breeland was already being tackled to the ground? Watch this GIF below, via @L_Mitros85:

Look at the still screens for further proof of Breeland already being down (or on his way down):

The rules goes on to talk about the head/neck thing, which isn't where Baker hit Foles. So is this legal contact because it's not in the head/neck? But I thought the rule indicated the passer must not be unnecessarily contacted at all?

I don't know.

Just seems weird that a league so concerned with player safety is OK with a hit like this.

No regrets.

Philadelphia Eagles starting All-Pro left tackle Jason Peters was asked about his actions against Washington Redskins defensive player Chris Baker. Peters said he regrets getting kicked out of the game and he knows he has a fine coming his way. But if he could change a thing about what happened, he wouldn't:

"I'd do it again."

Peters also knows that's exactly what Baker had to say about his hit on Foles. And in response to that, Peters said that if Baker hits Foles again:

"He's gonna get the same result."

Peters was ejected from the game for throwing punches and escalating a fight in response to a dirty and illegal hit that Baker put on Foles. Here's video of what happened:

I said it the other day and I'll say it again: Peters' actions were justified.

Jason Peters absolutely did the right thing when he went after Chris Baker following Baker's cheap-shot on Foles. Peters is usually a mild-mannered player but he had no hesitation to stand up for his teammate. Watch the video of Peters going after Baker here. Peters may have hurt the team by getting thrown out of the game but no one should be criticizing him for that (not that I have seen anyone do it). Peters took a stand for what was right.

Peters has made more than enough money in his career to cover his impending fine. But I'm sure if the city of Philadelphia (including Nick Foles) could collectively help pay it off, they would.

OFFENSE

Best

Jeremy Maclin +2.7
Nick Foles +1.6
James Casey +1.1
Jordan Matthews +1.1

Analysis:

Jeremy Maclin had a day: Eight receptions on 10 targets for 154 yards (19.3 average) and one touchdown. 83 were from YAC (yards after catch) and Maclin would have had even more if his screen reception for a touchdown had not been called back.

Nick Foles obviously played heck of a game: 28 completions on 42 attempts (66.7%) for 325 yards (7.7 average), three touchdowns, and a 113.7 passer rating. Foles was lethal when he wasn't blitzed; all three touchdowns came when he wasn't pressured.

James Casey not only made the clutch 19-yard grab to seal the game but he also graded out positively as a run blocker.

Rookie wideout (and future Hall of Famer) Jordan Matthews burst onto the scene with eight receptions on exactly eight targets for 59 yards (7.9 average) and two touchdowns. Matthews looked great in the redzone.

Worst

Andrew Gardner -6.4
LeSean McCoy -4.9
David Molk -4.8
Zach Ertz -4.8
Todd Herremans -2.0
Jason Kelce -1.3
Darren Sproles -1.2

Analysis:

The Eagles patch-work offensive line did not allow a sack but they did allow pressure. Andrew Gardner was marked down for six hurries and one quarterback hit allowed. He also had one penalty. David Molk allowed three hurries and one hit. Todd Herremans allowed one hurry and one hit. Tight end Zach Ertz allowed two hurries in just two pass block snaps.

Running back LeSean McCoy barely finished with more yards than attempts: 19 carries for 22 yards (1.2 average). McCoy's longest run of the day was nine yards and he even fumbled a ball that luckily went out of bounds. McCoy just didn't look right after getting hit hard in the head early in the game. His run blocking also wasn't great.

Darren Sproles gained 20 yards on two attempts but he fumbled and turned the ball over.

DEFENSE

Best

Malcolm Jenkins +2.5
Brandon Boykin +1.5

Analysis:

Starting safety Malcolm Jenkins was only targeted once and didn't allow a catch. He also recorded an impressive diving interception along with making three tackles and one stop. A number of people criticized the Eagles' signing of Jenkins in the offseason because his PFF grades were poor in past years. Through three weeks, Jenkins is the fifth highest graded safety on PFF. Other top free agent safety options are much lower: Jarius Byrd is 54th, Donte Whitner is 54th, Michael Mitchell is 50th, T.J. Ward is 45th, Chris Clemons is a free agent. Keep in mind Jenkins was signed at only three-year, $15.5 million while a top option like Byrd (six-year, $54 million) was much more expensive.

Brandon Boykin continues to excel in limited playing time. He was targeted four times and only allowed one catch for 10 yards. Boykin had a crucial pass defensed on third down late in the game that forced Washington to go for it on fourth down and fail to convert.

Worst

Nate Alllen -3.4
Fletcher Cox -3.3
Bradley Fletcher -2.5
Cedric Thornton -2.2
Brandon Bair -2.1
Cary Williams -2.0
Vinny Curry -1.4
Nolan Carroll II -1.3
DeMeco Ryans -1.1

Analysis:

Yeah, there's a lot of bad here. Unsurprisingly, most of the negative grading came in pass rush and pass coverage.

The biggest struggles came from the starting members in the secondary not named Malcolm Jenkins. Bradley Fletcher: 16 targets, nine catches, 104 yards, two touchdowns. Cary Williams: 10 targets, seven catches, 98 yards. Nate Allen: Seven targets, five catches, 110 yards, one touchdown.

Fletcher Cox graded negatively as a pass rusher and a run defender and he also committed a penalty. Cedric Thornton struggled as a pass rusher. Brandon Bair's run defense was not favorable, and the same could be said for Vinny Curry who was marked down for two missed tackles.

Hey, DeSean. Scoreboard.

Apparently Washington Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson did not realize his team lost to the Philadelphia Eagles yesterday.

Jackson posted the following post on his official Instagram page on Monday night, captioned:

"#CashMoney #0ne0fone #Skins"

Depicted is Jackson's 81-yard touchdown reception he had against the Eagles. I am sure it was a great play for Jackson. It was his moment of revenge against a team that unceremoniously dumped him earlier in the offseason. It is no surprise he wants to cherish it.

But this post really shows he just doesn't get it. He's posting this picture just a day after his team lost. Yeah, Jackson scored, he taunted Eagles players and fans, and he got his 'revenge' on this play. It was good for him. But so what? In the end, what did it really matter? Check the scoreboard, DeSean. Washington lost the game!

Celebrating this play just makes him look like he cares more about personal achievements than actually winning. He doesn't seem to be too upset about the loss as he is happy about his touchdown. Or am I just misunderstanding the inclusion of the "#CashMoney" hashtag?

Speaking of, look at this tweet from fellow Bleeding Green Nation writer Dan Klausner shortly following Sunday's game:

Text from friend: A guy I know is buddies w/ DeSean. Desean said "all I want Sunday is 100 and a touchdown." Didn't give a shit if they won.

It was an awesome game to watch between two bitter rivals. This game really had it all: big plays, injuries, taunting, fights, storylines... you name it.

Eagles quarterback Nick Foles really stepped up and deserved a lot of credit for the victory. Foles bounced back strong despite a cheap shot hit put on him by Washington defender Chris Baker. All-Pro left tackle Jason Peters made Baker regret his foolish decision. Philadelphia's starting wide receivers Jeremy Maclin and Jordan Matthews also came up big with stellar performances. Rookie kicker Cody Parkey made the 51-yard field goal that ended up being the difference in the Eagles' victory.

Eagles head coach Chip Kelly responded to Cary Williams' post-game criticism.

As noted on Sunday following the Eagles-Redskins game, Philadelphia cornerback Cary Williams was not shy to criticize Chip Kelly despite the team getting off to a 3-0 start. In short, Williams said that he felt the Eagles work their players too hard. Williams seemed to blame some of his in-game struggles on how the team prepares for game-day.

Eagles head coach Chip Kelly responded to those comments on Monday. First, Kelly appeared on the 94 WIP Morning Show and offered some thoughts.

"Cary actually didn’t really practice last week. So he was limited—he missed Wednesday and Thursday, just did some light things on Wednesday and Thursday and then Friday is obviously a walk through for us. So we monitor all of our players on an individual basis and then kind of what they can do and can’t do. So, we’re practicing the same way we’ve always practiced."

I believe we’re the freshest team in the fourth quarter. I think that if you look at what we’re doing in the fourth quarter of games.I think if you look at what we’re doing in the fourth quarter of games I thought our defense came up huge. Malcolm Jenkins too weeks in a row with interceptions in the fourth quarter was big for us. To force them after that short punt to go four straight downs and out at the end of the game and they were close to being in field goal range. I thought the way our whole team played in the fourth quarter obviously shows what type of conditioning we have.

Kelly was asked about Williams' comments again during his press conference on Monday. Kelly noted that he talked to Williams. "I have no problems with Cary," Kelly said. Kelly went on to say that Williams was "just frustrated."

* * *

Kelly also confirmed a report from earlier on Monday that Kelce will have sports hernia surgery. Kelly did not offer an official timetable. Based on past examples, however, these injuries can keep a player out of action anywhere from six to eight weeks.

David Molk will start in place of Kelce in the meantime. Kelly noted that veteran Wade Smith is also capable of playing center.

* * *

Kelly gave a (non-)update on the status of injured inside linebacker Mychal Kendricks, who suffered a calf injury in Week 2 and sat out of Philadelphia's Week 3 game against Washington. Kelly on Kendricks: "It's a muscle, so I don't know how long it'll be." A report from last week indicated that Kendricks may miss the Eagles' game against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4.
