The battle intensifies.

OK, so maybe I jumped the gun a little bit last week when I suggested the Philadelphia Eagles kicker for the upcoming 2014 season isn't on the roster yet.

But that's not because I was being too harsh on incumbent starter Alex Henery. Instead, it was because I was being too dismissive of recently acquired undrafted rookie free agent placekicker Cody Parkey.

Parkey, who arrived in Philadelphia after the Eagles traded running back David Fluellen to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for him, really put on a performance to remember in the team's 37-7 preseason win over the New York Jets on Thursday night.

Parkey attempted a total of three field goals and successfully converted all of them. One was a chip-shot from 25 yards out while the other two were long-distance makes from 53 and 54 yards. Both of those kicks from far out topped the career long of Henery, a three-year NFL veteran, from 51 yards.

So should the Eagles keep Parkey over Henery? I'd say the answer to that question is... "Yes."

Look, Henery is coming off a below average 2013 performance where he kicked 82.1% on field goals (22nd) and had a second-to-last average kickoff distance of of 64.7 yards (31st). Henery had every opportunity to quiet his doubters this summer. And he didn't do it. With misses from 31 and 47 in the preseason -- which is admittedly a small sample size -- his struggles have only continued. In fairness to Henery, his kickoffs have improved (70.3 average distance), but maybe that's just not enough.

Parkey, on the other hand, has been slightly better on kickoffs (71.9 average distance) and more reliable when it comes to kicking field goals.

It remains to be seen if one good preseason performance will be enough for Parkey to unseat Henery. The signs seems to be encouraging for the rookie so far. Remember that 53-yard attempt Parkey made (of course you do!)? That was supposed to be an attempt for Alex Henery. The decision to put Parkey in for Henery wasn't made until three seconds before the play occurred.

"Coach Chip Kelly told me if it was another long one we want to see what you got. It was another long one so I just went out there. Alex Henery and I were warming up in the net so, but they let me have it," Parkey explained.

The Eagles let Parkey kick over Henery on Thursday night. It's time to make that a more permanent decision.

The Philadelphia Eagles beat the New York Jets 37-7 on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field, the final game of the preseason. With the win the Eagles move to 2-2 on their 2014 preseason schedule. Players that stood out in the game include Cody Parkey and Henry Josey, among others.

Eagles Quarterbacks

Matt Barkley - 21/33, 253 yards, 7.7 average, 1 TD, 1 INT, 84.5 rating

Barkley was far from perfect but overall his play was encouraging. There was more positive than negative.

G.J. Kinne - 3-3, 39 yards, 13.0 average, 1 TD, 0 INT, 158.3 rating

Nick Foles / Mark Sanchez - Did not play. Foles is obviously the team's starter and Sanchez, who has had a great preseason, didn't have much to prove by playing against his former team's backups.

Kicker competition

Players that stood out

Cody Parkey - 3/3 with makes from 54, 53, and 25

Henry Josey - 20 carries, 114 yards, 5.5 average

Jeff Maehl - 4 receptions, 84 yards

Arrelious Benn - 2 receptions, 55 yards

Brandon Bair - fumble recovery

FIRST HALF OBSERVATIONS

Eagles win the toss and opt to receive. Kenjon Barner returns the first kickoff.

Matt Barkley starts at quarterback. Jeff Maehl, Arrelious Benn, and Damaris Johnson start at wide receiver. Matthew Tucker starts at running back.

Jets defender dives into the leg of Eagles guard Matt Tobin. Yikes. Ugly looking, but Tobin gets up and walks off the field on his own power.

By design, former Eagles and current Jets QB Michael Vick only played one snap. Vick received a nice little ovation as he walked off the field.

Rookie Jaylen Watkins breaks up a pass and makes a tackle on the first defensive series.

Henry Josey with some impressive runs on the Eagles second offensive drive. Barkley kills the drive with an interception intended for undrafted rookie free agent wide receiver Quron Pratt in the endzone.

Matthew Tucker, who has had a good preseason, breaks off some nice runs as well. The run blocking looks really great.

Barkley with an impressive deep ball to a wide open Arrelious Benn is good for a touchdown. That's a good bounce back effort from Barkley. One of the more impressive throws I've seen Barkley make in his career. Not a bad play for Benn either, of course, who just might be in the mix to earn a roster spot as a sixth wide receiver.

Cody Parkey takes the first extra point attempt and makes it. Tucker follows up with a good special teams tackle on kickoff coverage.

Jeff Maehl makes a good adjustment on a ball in the air for a deep catch down field. Barkley put it up where Maehl could fight for it. Maehl and Benn are fighting hard for a sixth receiver spot that may or may not exist.

Tight end Trey Burton makes an impressive diving catch on a play that didn't count because he couldn't stay in-bounds. Also a penalty on the play.

Eagles face a 4th and 1 and go for it instead of kicking. This isn't all that unlike Chip Kelly, but it's interesting the Eagles didn't want to give one of their kickers a chance to hit the 28-yard attempt.

Barkley overthrows Pratt deep down the sideline. Shame, because if the pass was on target, it would have easily gone for six.

Cody Parkey attempts a 54-yard field goal... and it's good! With room to spare. How about that? Parkey's 54-yard make is three yards longer than Alex Henery's career long of 51.

Earl Wolff puts his helmet on the ball of a Jets running back and forces the fumble. Nice play by Wolff. Brandon Bair dives in for the clean recovery.

Parkey drills another field goal, but shorter this time: 25 yards.

SECOND HALF OBSERVATIONS

Alex Henery kicks off to start the second half. It's an ugly, wobbly kick but it ends up being a touchback due to a failed effort from the Jets' returner.

Rookie safety Ed Reynolds II misses a golden opportunity to make a big play when a deep ball goes right through his hands. I'm not sure how he didn't end up with the ball on that play.

Another make for Parkey! This time it's from 53 yards out. He's unstoppable!

With Barner (ankle) and Tucker (shoulder) leaving early with injuries, Damaris Johnson took some snaps at running back.

Matthew Barkley scrambles for a touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Barkley had a lot of space to work with, but his wheels didn't look bad.

Barkley is done for the night and the legendary G.J. Kinne takes over. Kinne even leads a touchdown drive! Good catch from Trey Burton, too. Burton is an interesting player.

Damaris Johnson 46-yard touchdown run! I don't see Johnson making the team but he should be able to get a job elsewhere in the NFL.

Injuries

Left the game and did not return:

UPDATE:

Tobin's X-rays were negative. He will not return to action against the Jets, however.

...

Philadelphia Eagles backup offensive guard Matt Tobin is getting X-rays on his left ankle after leaving the Eagles-Jets preseason game on Thursday night. Tobin is questionable to return to the game.

Tobin suffered the injury early into the game. The backup offensive lineman fell to the ground hard when a Jets defended crashed into Tobin's knee. It did not look pretty and Tobin spent some time on the ground while trainers came out to look at him.

Tobin would eventually get up and walk off the field on his own power. Tobin was monitored on the Eagles' trainers table before eventually heading back inside to the team's locker room.

Tobin isn't a starter but he's had a great summer and figures to be one of the key backups along the Eagles offensive line. Tobin might even be in the mold of the next Allen Barbre; that is, a backup offensive lineman who figures to be the first player off the bench at every position except for center.

Here's the latest on the Eagles injury situation.

As is customary in the fourth NFL preseason game, the Philadelphia Eagles starters will not play against the New York Jets on Thursday night. There are also a few backup/depth players sitting out due to injury.

The following Eagles players have been ruled out and will not play against the Jets:

Wide receiver Josh Huff (shoulder)

Chris Polk (hamstring)

...

Quick take: It is disappointing to see that Polk, who has missed of the summer with a slightly torn hamstring, isn't able to play against the Jets. As final cuts loom and with other Eagles running backs, such as Matthew Tucker and Henry Josey, excelling in Polk's absence... his future with the team remains to be seen.

Huff is still out from a shoulder injury he suffered in the Eagles' preseason game against the New England Patriots. Huff is safe to make the team but it's unclear if he will be ready to play once the regular season starts.
