The Eagles' second year cornerback was a critical component of the Eagles' success in their division clinching win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Pro Football Focus is a site that grades NFL player performances.
OFFENSE

Best

Jason Kelce +4.6
Jason Peters +4.3
Evan Mathis +4.3
Todd Herremans +2.8
Nick Foles +2.5
Brent Celek +2.3
LeSean McCoy +1.7
James Casey +1.2
Zach Ertz +1.1
Chris Polk +1.0 (5 snaps)

Worst

Brad Smith -0.5 (4 snaps)
DeSean Jackson -0.5

Analysis: A lot of positive grades on the offensive side. The Eagles gained 366 yards as a team along with 3 TD and only 1 turnover (fumble). The entire offensive line graded positively, but mostly as run blockers. Jason Peters had the best grade in pass protection; he didn't allow a single sack, hit, or hurry. That's impressive considering he was going up against DeMarcus Ware, but then again it's Jason Peters.

Nick Foles finished with a positive grade for the second straight week in a row. The second year signal caller threw for 263 yards on 17/26 (65.4%) passing for 2 TD and a 124.4 QB rating. Foles was also sacked 5 times and fumbled once.

LeSean McCoy won the rushing title before Sunday Night Football even started, but he felt it necessary to have another big game. Shady ran for 131 yards on 27 attempts (4.9 avg) with 44 of those yards coming after contact. Fellow running back Chris Polk also contributed nicely with a catch and run for 34 yards.

All three tight ends finished with a positive grade, which is a fun sight to see. Each player contributed in different ways. Celek's contributions came both as a blocker and a receiver with 3 catches for 71 yards and 1 TD. Ertz pitched in with 3 catches for 43 yards. James Casey, who is playing more often now on offense than he has all season, graded positively as a run blocker.

As for the worse offensive performances, they weren't too bad. WR Brad Smith only played four snaps but threw an incomplete pass intended for Ertz on a WR reverse in the red zone. DeSean Jackson caught 3 passes on 4 targets but only gained a total of 28 yards.

DEFENSE

Best

Brandon Boykin +2.8
Nate Allen +1.5
Bradley Fletcher +1.4
Cary Williams +1.4

Worst

Fletcher Cox -3.6
DeMeco Ryans -2.8
Trent Cole -1.6
Patrick Chung -1.2
Connor Barwin -1.0

Analysis: Saving the best for first, Brandon Boykin absolutely had a game. Along with 1 QB hurry and a tackle, he was solid in coverage: 2 catches allowed on 5 targets for 52 yards. He recorded 2 passes defense, including a deflection on a pass to Dez Bryant in the end zone (as seen in the story picture). Boykin also made the play of the game when he picked off Kyle Orton to seal an Eagles victory. Long live the Boyking.

The Eagles secondary had a solid performance. Nate Allen was targeted 4 times and allowed 4 catches but only allowed 26 yards. Bradley Fletcher only allowed 22 yards while racking up 7 tackles and 2 stops. Cary Williams allowed 3 catches on 7 targets for 43 yards and broke up a potential game-tying Cowboys two-point-try intended for Dez Bryant.

Fletcher Cox was the Eagles' worst graded defender due to a lack of pass rush and commiting a penalty. He finished with 1 tackle and 1 stop. DeMeco Ryans made 6 tackles but was assigned blame for 66 yards and 1 TD on 4 catches. Trent Cole has played well recently but also failed to generate pass rush. Patrick Chung was the worst member of the Eagles' secondary (to no surprise) having missed 2 tackles and allowing 1 TD and 43 yards. Chung was responsible for a Bryant TD that could have tied the game had the Cowboys not failed the two point try. Outside linebacker Connor Barwin graded positively in coverage, but also struggled as a pass rusher. Barwin did have a crucial batted pass on a Dallas 4th down attempt in the second half.

Some quick notes and a strategy discussion.

Well that was….agonizing. The offense simply didn’t do its job, if it had, the game would have been a blowout. Not going to dwell too much on it, though. Only thing really worth investigation is whether Foles had places to throw the ball instead of taking the sacks.

For now, some quick notes:

- One of the biggest issues the past few years has been the lack of impact players on defense. My perspective is that, in general, you can scheme to score points, but need talent to prevent them. The Eagles haven’t had that….until now (maybe). Mychal Kendricks played a great game, and looks to have found some measure of consistency (his biggest issue last year). Boykin, outside of the really stupid PR penalty, also played a very good game. The development of those two players is HUGELY important for the future of the team, especially when you consider the very real possibility (hopefully) that the team won’t be picking in the first half of the draft for a while. Fletcher Cox didn’t make many players, but it looked like he was seeing consistent double-teams. If that’s true, then he’s doing his job as well.

- Jason Garrett made some very poor strategic decisions, to the Eagles advantage of course. Punting on 4th and 2 in Eagles territory is just completely indefensible, especially when you consider how good the Eagles’ offense is (despite its performance yesterday). It’s shocking to me that coaches still do things like that, when so much work has been done to show it’s clearly the wrong move. According to Expected Points, from AdvancedNFLStats.com, Garret gave away MORE THAN A FULL POINT with that decision. He also struggled with more than just 4th down calls…

- The Cowboys’ biggest advantage coming into the game was on Special Teams. Moreover, their return man, Dwayne Harris, was healthy again and among the more dangerous return men in the league. Yet….he brought just 2 kicks out of the end zone (averaging 32.5 yards on those returns). Another huge strategic blunder. It doesn’t matter that the kicks were in the back of the end zone. As an underdog, you need to (a) up the variance, and (b) leverage your strengths. They did the complete opposite by not returning every kick. This isn’t an isolated occurrence either. Look at this, from Jared Cohen (@jaredscohen),

You can see Dallas in the upper-left quadrant. They’re above average in returns, yet attempt them far less than average. Yes, there is some cross-causation here (it’s possible they’re above average because the only return kicks that don’t go deep into the end zone). However, remember they were big underdogs here, with a QB that couldn’t push the ball downfield. Maybe they should have taken a shot at giving Dwayne Harris a few shots against a poor Eagles STs unit? Yeah…but I’m sure happy they didn’t.

Let’s just hope Jerry Jones isn’t lying when he says he’s keeping Garrett….

- Billy Davis….I’m done. He’s at the top of the list as far as changes I’d like to see the team make. The personnel still needs improvement, and blown coverages can’t get blamed on him, but he just doesn’t seem to have any feel for the strategic ebb and flow of the game. He also seems to be completely ignorant of the risk/reward equation of blitzing in various situations.

The toughest part about judging coaches is that you never know if the players are actually executing what they’re told. However, allowing the Cowboys, in a vitally important situation, to get Dez Bryant matched up one-on-one with Patrick Chung as a result of a simple, single-man pre-snap motion is absolutely ridiculous. It shouldn’t happen. It CAN’T happen.

Also, when blitzes aren’t working, the answer is NOT to blitz more! Here, Davis seemed to have no idea who he was playing against. Kyle Orton, at this stage of his career especially, is a check-down, quick-read QB. He’s not great, but if there’s a wide-open receiver, he’s going to complete the pass. He also can’t push the ball downfield. So why blitz? If the QB is routinely taking 3-step drops, it doesn’t matter what blitz you call, there isn’t enough time to for it to get home. Instead, Davis should have been happy to rush just 4 linemen and drop everyone else into coverage. Orton’s not mobile, so the LBs are all free to man-up or drop into an underneath zone.

Against a QB with great accuracy (like Drew Brees for example), you can’t do this, because coverage is much more difficult. Against Kyle Orton, though, the coverage doesn’t have to be perfect, he’s not that good! He made one legitimately great throw all game (to Terrance Williams). Other than that, his ball-placement was off, sometimes by a lot. If that’s the case, the last thing you want to do is make things easy for him by leaving receivers uncovered (a side-effect of blitzing).

Most unfortunately, this isn’t a one-time occurrence; Davis has struggled with this all year.

- One last blitz point….it’s a high-variance strategy! In other words, it’s something you should generally avoid if you are the favorite. If you’re the better team, you don’t need the high-reward! As a result, the payoff isn’t worth the associated risk. As a significant favorite, it’s the OTHER team that should be forced to make riskier plays.

To be fair, though, I don’t think many DCs (if any) really conceptualize blitzing or general defensive strategy like this. That’s not a good excuse for Davis though, it just means the whole profession needs some instruction.

Now some happy thoughts:

- 10 wins, a division title, a home playoff game, the league’s top rated passer, the league’s leading rusher, the most 20+ yard plays in NFL history. As I said in the pre-game notes, this season has been a resounding success. We’re playing with house money now.

- The Eagles went 7-1 over the second half of the season.

- Drew Brees is legitimately great, and scares me regardless of where the game is, but getting him out of the dome really is a big deal.

- The Saints are 2-3 in their last 5 games. It’s been a very difficult stretch (losses have come against Seattle, Carolina, and St. Louis), but still. This team isn’t quite as good as the Saints you’re used to hearing. That said, they have a point differential of +110, nearly twice the Eagles’ mark of +60. (My first reaction to the -2.5 line is that it’s off by a couple of points).

- Despite that, if I told you pre-season that the Eagles were a 50/50 proposition to make it to the divisional round of the playoffs, my guess is you’d have been thrilled and/or called my insane.

- Playoffs!

Re-live the Eagles big win through pictures from the game.

The Eagles left Dallas last night with their biggest win of the season. Philadelphia ahdvanced to a 10-6 record to finish the 2013 NFL regular season and clinched the NFC East in the process. Due to their big efforts, the No. 3 seed in the NFC playoffs now belongs to them.

It was a tough, hard fought game. Dallas was missing several key players due to injury, but showed resiliency. Ultimately their efforts fell short and second year Eagles cornerback Brandon Boykin made a huge play to intercept a Kyle Orton pass to virtually seal the game for Philly. Boykin, along with Mychal Kendricks and LeSean McCoy, was a key player in the Eagles' victory.

The Cowboys had only lost two games at home all year which included close losses to both the Denver Broncos and the Green Bay Packers. The Eagles became the third team to win in Dallas, as well as the first NFC East opponent to beat the Cowboys all year.

Observations: Chris Polk and Bryce Brown are seeing more even splits in relief of LeSean McCoy. Earlier in the season, Brown was consistently playing more than Polk. Both contributed well in limited time against the Cowboys. Brad Smith continues to jump in on offense on a few select plays each game. The Eagles used him on a reverse WR throw that Zach Ertz almost caught for a TD. James Casey played over 40% of the snaps for the second straight week for the first time all year.

That was a close one...

First off, let me say something. I was not for a Chip Kelly hiring initially and was a fan of Gus Bradley or Mike McCoy. While both of those coaches did well with the talent they have, Kelly was clearly the right hire for the Eagles and I concede that I was definitely wrong. I did get on the bandwagon in OTAs, but nonetheless, I was wrong to begin with and I admit it.

The Eagles beat the Cowboys in a close game that really came down to the wire. The offense looked pathetic at times, as did the defense, but in the end, Philadelphia is the NFC East champion. Brandon Boykin and Mychal Kendricks had key turnovers to win this game, but outside of that, the defense was pretty rough. A two-point conversion breakup by Cary Williams may have been the second biggest play of the game, outside of the Boykin interception.

On offense, things could have been better. While Nick Foles threw for 263 passing yards and two touchdowns, he had an up-and-down game. He had some great passes, but also got lucky at times. Forgotten names like Brent Celek and Jason Avant were huge in this game, while LeSean McCoy continued to be the best offensive player in the league. McCoy settled the rushing, all-purpose and yard from scrimmage titles, while breaking the team records for rushing and yards from scrimmage.

Bring on New Orleans, Philadelphia is hungry and is ready!

HOT

Brandon Boykin: The game-winning interception was obviously huge, but he also broke up a Dez Bryant touchdown. This kid is ridiculously talented and has been the best secondary player this season, by a mile! Your Bar Mitzvah card is in the mail, Brandon.

Mychal Kendricks: What a turnover roll this kid has been on! He had a forced fumble in the first quarter and had a big interception as well. Both turnovers led to points and likely kept the Eagles from losing the game.

LeSean McCoy: This guy is the best non-quarterback in the game right now. He gathered three titles on Sunday and did it before rushing for 131 yards and gaining a three-yard receiving touchdown.

Brent Celek: This guy is not just a great blocker, but he was absolutely huge as a pass-catcher on Sunday. He caught a massive pass to get great field positioning and was rewarded on the second touchdown of the game.

Jason Avant: The veteran has been forgotten all season but made some major grabs on Sunday. He caught a redzone ball that likely should have been intercepted, with Morris Claiborne draped all over him and Foles throwing awkwardly.

Connor Barwin: He is just everywhere. The batted pass in the fourth quarter forced a turnover on downs and completely changed the dynamic of the game. He is so valuable to this team and may be the best free agent signing by the Eagles since Asante Samuel.

Bryce Brown: He got two carries, but he made them count. He had the game-winning touchdown on a beautiful six-yard touchdown run.

Bradley Fletcher and Cary Williams: Both cornerbacks made huge plays on Sunday. Fletcher recovered the Kendricks forced fumble of DeMarco Murray and Williams stopped Dez Bryant from receiving a pretty good looking pass from Kyle Orton on a two-point conversion. Both came to play.

Special Teams: This was a well-called area of the game. Alex Henery made a very solid 49-yard field goal and Donnie Jones was dynamite as always. The coverage teams also did well.

NOT

Offensive Line: While Foles held on to the ball fairly long, the line did not help matters. There were several missed blocks and a quite a few pressures. Jason Hatcher is not very good but has had the Eagles goat this season. There were five sacks on Sunday of Foles, which is not a normal thing.

Pat Chung: Wow, this guy sucks. He was responsible for the Bryant touchdown in the second half and quite a few more big plays. Get well soon, Earl Wolff.

Pass Rush: While there was several pressure, no one finished on Orton. He held the ball a lot and was not brought down. That has to change with New Orleans coming to town.

Wide Receiver and Tight End Blocking: Zach Ertz missed two clear blocks that led to sacks on Sunday and DeSean Jackson gave a bit of a flimsy effort as a blocker as well. The blocking by the non-offensive linemen needs to be better as well.

Refereeing: Has this staff ever heard of holding? Or illegal contact? Poor Damion Square...

Miscellaneous Musings

We have to wait for the All-22, but this looked like a mediocre game for play-calling and Foles. While neither were bad, it did seem like both struggled quite a bit at times. The offensive play-calling seemed very passive to begin with and like impacted the score in the first half. Foles held on to the ball far too long, but to his credit took sacks over turnovers. He did well at gaining major yardage but there were times when Foles looked off. Kelly likely could have made better calls early, but his clock management late in the game was perfectly fine.

Winning with Chip Kelly is waaaay more fun than winning with Andy Reid. I am a known Reid apologist, but this may be the most fun season since the Super Bowl year. Bravo, Chip! Bravo!

The Saints were the right draw for the opening game of the playoffs for the Eagles. New Orleans simply can't take the elements. It will be nice to see the defense against Drew Brees in rough weather.

Eagles fans wanted a quarterback that could take them to the playoffs and Foles has. While his performance was not stellar, there is no doubt that Foles is the guy for at least 2014. He is 8-2 as a starter and won the Eagles the first Giants game in relief. With 27 touchdowns and two interceptions, his numbers are ridiculous and he led the league in passer rating and pass per attempt this season. His passer rating and yards per pass attempt are the best in Eagles history. He finishes with a 119.2 passer rating and 9.1 yards per pass attempt. By the way, Foles' 27 touchdowns and two interceptions are the greatest ratio in NFL history. He is the first to throw more than 20 touchdowns and only two interceptions. #WonderFoles

Bring on the Saints!

Playoffs!!!

Final game of the 2013 NFL regular season. Let's get it started.

FIRST QUARTER

Eagles win the toss, but defer. Cowboys get the ball first.

Dallas first possession. Kyle Orton starting at QB for the 'boys. Cowboys driving with some success. Dallas fumble! Mychal Kendricks knocks it out of the hands of Dallas running back DeMarco Murray. Eagles cornerback Bradley Fletcher catches the ball and the Eagles recover. Big play on a bend-but-don't-break drive.

Now it's time for the Eagles offense to show something. A catch and run from Chris Polk on third down gives the Eagles a big gain. Lane Johnson called for a holding call and the Eagles face a third and long. Pass is complete, but it's 4th and short. Chip Kelly doesn't go for it. Alex Henery field goal is good from 47 yards out. Eagles 3, Cowboys 0.

Henery comes up big again by kicking the ball out of the endzone for a touchback on the kickoff. That's a good way to neutralize Cowboys return man Dwayne Harris. Dallas takes the field on offense for the second time. Undrafted rookie DL Damion Square is trucked by DeMarco Murray on a play, but the Cowboys drive stalls. Punt.

Eagles second offensive drive. Foles connect with Ertz on a big third down conversion, and then LeSean McCoy runs for a big gain. Foles called for intentional grounding on a screen pass intended for McCoy, but next play is a big gain for a first by DeSean Jackson.

SECOND QUARTER

Still Eagles ball to start the second quarter. First play of the second quarter, Foles throws it up and Jason Avant grabs the jump ball. Great catch from the veteran. Next play, LeSean McCoy catches a short, easy pass for a TD. Philly up two possessions. Foles playing well. Good things! Eagles 10, Cowboys 0.

Cowboys ball after a decent kick return. Three and out. Punt.

Eagles on offense, long field to work with. Foles sacked on third down and the now the Eagles have to punt.

Cowboys up. Eagles force a third down but Dallas converts on a Terrence Williams catch down field. Murray helps run Dallas into the redzone, and a Gavin Escobar 17 yard catch and run TD gives the Cowboys their first score. Eagles defense not looking too sharp. Eagles 10, Cowboys 7.

Time to answer right back. McCoy fails to stick with his blocking on a play which sets up a third and long, but Avant helps move the chains. McCoy runs for a 16 yard gain soon after, which breaks the Eagles' single season rushing record. Eagles have to punt shortly after. Brandon Boykin called for (a tacky) fair catch interference on the return. Penalty breakdown so far: Eagles 5-45, Cowboys 0-0.

Cowboys up. Third and long strikes again as the Cowboys convert. 2 minute warning. Mychal Kendricks interception! Big play on a dropped pass from Witten. Crucial turnover.

Eagles take over and the first play is a pass down field to Brent Celek. Good throw and tough catch. Then Celek gets in on the action again with a catch and run for a touchdown! What a quick turnaround. Eagles 17, Cowboys 7.

Injury update: Jason Avant shoulder contusion, questionable to return.

Dallas up with a little over a minute to go in the first half. Cowboys driving. Eagles not offering much pass rush. Cowboys move into field goal range, and the Eagles get a stop on third down. Yes, you read that right. Dan Bailey drills the 44 yarder. Eagles 17, Cowboys 10.

Eagles get the ball back with 18 seconds left in the first half and three timeouts, but opt to kneel it down. End of the first half.

THIRD QUARTER

Eagles ball to start the second half. Foles is sacked on the first play and the Eagles end up going three and out. Not a great start. Punt.

Cowboys with a chance to tie things up. Dallas driving. The Cowboys move into FG range, and Orton chucks it up to Bryant in the endzone on third down. Boykin is there to knock it to the ground. Critical deflection. Cowboys kick a FG. Eagles 17, Cowboys 13.

Injury update: Jason Avant cleared to return.

Eagles really need to show something on this drive. But they don't. After a no-call on what could have been a pass interference call, the Eagles lose the ball on a Foles fumble as he is sacked. Not a great performance up front, and Foles is holding onto the ball for ages.

Dallas ball in good field position. Fortunately for Philly, it's a three and out for Dallas. Field goal is good. Eagles 17, Cowboys 16.

Eagles ball, nothing going, three and out. Frustration. Punt.

Dallas's turn, and they do nothing as well. Key stop by the Eagles defense. Punt. Decent return by DeSean Jackson.

Eagles ball. Hey, a first down! Shady helping the Birds move the ball. Eagles in scoring territory now. DeSean catches it right near the goal line but is stopped short. Fourth and goal on the inch line. Eagles going for it. They don't get it. Right call, bad execution. Turnover on downs.

FOURTH QUARTER

Dallas ball. Moving down the field and they face a 4th and 1. Cowboys going for it. Connor Barwin comes up huge and deflects the Orton pass. Turnover on downs!

Eagles with the chance to seize control. Driving. Into field goal range. Into the redzone. Shady running. Now Bryce Brown running, and it's a touchdown! 6 yards for the score, and great blocking on the play. What a drive: 11 plays, 60 yards. Still a one possession game. Eagles 24, Cowboys 16.

Cowboys turn. Dallas answers back with some big plays down the field. Breaking: Dallas finally get called for a penalty. There was a weird issue with the play clock, so it shouldn't have even been called, but it did. Cowboys facing 4th and 9. And... the Cowboys get a touchdown. So there's that. Probably not the best call Bill Davis has ever made. Dallas going for a 2 point try. They don't get it, though. Eagles still in the lead. Cowboys have one timeout remaining. Eagles 24, Cowboys 22.

Eagles ball with 3:45 left in the game. Time to run some clock and move the ball. Or not. Foles slides on third down after being left with nothing to throw. Made the most of a bad situation. Eagles punt.

Dallas up. Huge drive for both teams here. First play, OH MY GOSH WHAT KYLE ORTON INTERCEPTION TO BRANDON BOYKIN. Kyle Romo! The Boy King lives! Talk about a clutch play.

Eagles run out the clock to advance to 10-6.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

NFC EAST CHAMPIONS!
