Who were the best/worst graded Eagles players against the Broncos?

Pro Football Focus is a site that grades NFL player performances. Let's take a look at what they had to say about the performances in Philadelphia's loss to the Broncos.

PFF offers explanation on their grading system on their website. Read more about that here.

OFFENSE

Best

Michael Vick +2.0
Jason Kelce +1.8
Evan Mathis +1.6
Todd Herremans +1.1

Worst

Lane Johnson -3.5
Brent Celek -1.5
Jason Avant -1.0
Jason Peters -1.0

Analysis: Michael Vick produced nearly 300 yards of offense by himself and no turnovers. Jason Kelce and Evan Mathis were graded highly in run blocking, but Mathis was graded negatively in pass protection. Herremans allowed 3 QB hurries but graded OK as a run blocker.

Rookie OT Lane Johnson struggled yet again. Johnson was responsible for a sack and 5 QB hurries. Lane needs improvement, but it's important to note that other rookie OTs in the league are struggling. Celek was negatively graded a run defender and was responsible for 1 QB hurry. He also dropped a vital pass on third down in the redzone that could have been a TD. Peters gave up 4 hurries.

DEFENSE

<strike>Best</strike> The Least Worst

Cedric Thornton +0.9
Trent Cole 0.0
Bradley Fletcher -0.3

Worst

Cary Williams -3.8
Earl Wolff -3.5
DeMeco Ryans -3.3
Brandon Boykin -2.4
Bennie Logan -2.0
Mychal Kendricks -1.7
Fletcher Cox -1.5
Isaac Sopoaga -1.3
Connor Barwin -1.3
Nate Allen -1.0

Analysis: Nearly everyone was terrible.

Ced Thornton had the best game of any Eagle, credited for 1 sack, 1 hurry, 3 tackles, 1 assisted tackled, 4 stops. Trent Cole managed 2 hurries. Fletcher was the least worst CB on the field, but that really isn't saying too much.

Cary Williams was the Eagles' worst CB. He missed 2 tackles and gave up 2 catches on 3 targets. Earl Wolff also missed 2 tackles and gave up 5 receptions on 5 targets. A tough outing for the rookie making his first NFL start. The rest of the defenders... same story. Missed tackles. Catches allowed. No shocking revelations. The defense was just horrible.

This will not be like the normal review I do for games. Frankly, there was no one the Eagles had worthy of being considered "hot" and almost all were definitely "not." Sunday's loss to the Broncos' was not just remarkably humbling, but honestly one of the saddest and sorriest performances we have seen in a while. Let's give credit to where it is due, as the Broncos may be the best offense we have ever seen, but the Eagles barely put up a fight as Denver rolled to a 52-20 win in a game that wasn't even that close.

LeSean McCoy is a top three running back in the league and Bryce Brown was terrific enough to make the game interesting in the first half, but the Eagles had no shot in this one. The mirage that was the first two quarters really was just Denver warming up. When the Eagles had opportunities to limit the margin temporarily, guys would drop passes and for the most part, could not get open against single coverage for the second week in a row. It was just a sad afternoon to the point where I am sure a lot of you stopped watching after the third quarter. That doesn't mean you are not a loyal or dedicated fan, it means you emotionally couldn't handle the soul crushing that was the Eagles' trip to Denver.

Let's skip our normal "hot" and "not" section and just get into the miscellaneous musings.

Miscellaneous Musings

Special teams was surprisingly awful for a team that religiously practices it. The Trindon Holliday return was a sign of things to come as a blocked punt of Donnie Jones and another missed field goal (meaningless) by Alex Henery just proved it was not the Eagles' day.

The pass interference and offsides/neutral zone infractions were extremely frustrating but consider the competition. Peyton Manning is great at out-thinking everyone and getting time to complete throws. There was nothing the defense could do and while that is how it has been for Denver opponents, this was nothing all that new for Philadelphia.

Billy Davis, like most defensive coordinators, could not figure out Manning and the Broncos and he didn't have the talent to do it even if he could.

Rookie Earl Wolff looked like a rookie out there...but so did Mychal Kendricks, Cary Williams, Bradley Fletcher, Brandon Graham and Nate Allen. This was a very discouraging performance no matter who the opponent was.

It was nice to see running back Chris Polk on offense, but the scenario that set up his first carry and touchdown of career, is not a desired situation at all. McCoy and Brown looked winded from the altitude. That was a bummer but only happens once every four years.

When Nick Foles and Brock Osweiler are playing in the game, it's either a blowout or you are watching PAC-12 re-runs on ESPN. Another PAC-12 guy, Jeff Maehl, was able to finally contribute on offense and had an awesome long catch from Foles in the fourth that set up a touchdown pass between the two just one play later.

The Bradley Fletcher pass interference was a bad, bad call. Then again, he got away with like three holds during the game, so I guess it was eye-for-an-eye.

Rest assured, Michael Vick did all he could against Denver. The guy and his team have had a tough time with coming from behind in games over the last three years. I think he will bounce back against the Giants.

DeSean Jackson has been basically muzzled the last two weeks in mostly single coverage, and no one else that is not a running back has been able to really make a major impact. That is reality and extremely worrisome. I think it is time for Kelly to finally make more of a rotation on offense with Damaris Johnson, Zach Ertz and James Casey seeing more action. I am all for two running back sets with Brown and McCoy or McCoy and Polk.

It is a tempered worry, but I am concerned that McCoy is going to have trouble getting through the season at this pace. A rotation is definitely needed, but he should lead the league in rushing still.

Troy Aikman and Joe Buck is easily the worst commentary pair to have when your team is in a blowout on FOX. Buck has no ability to be funny and comes off as an unlikable smartass, despite getting several facts wrong during the telecast. Aikman always sounds like he is sleepy or bored.

Let's keep perspective, the Giants and Cowboys lost this weekend and the Redskins got their first win of the year on Sunday. The Eagles are one game behind Dallas, tied with Washington and one game ahead of New York. With that taken into account, despite having a horrific defensive and an up-and-down offense, the playoffs are very much in reach. Losing 52-20 is demoralizing, but is easy to move on from because Denver dominates everyone. With the Giants, Bucs and other fodder over the next few weeks, it should be doable for the Eagles get back in gear. The NFC East sucks.

- This was an "upside" game, so don’t freak out that they lost. Getting destroyed by one of the greatest offenses in recent history doesn’t tell us anything about the team. For the most part, I’m giving the defense a pass. Denver has put up points on everyone so far, and 14 of the points allowed came off STs. No shame in it.

I’ve definitely got some issues with Bill Davis’ play-calling and personnel usage (play Vinny f@ck%*g Curry for f*$@k’s sake), but the fact is that there was likely no "answer" today. Write it off and move on.

- The biggest takeaway was the apparent revelation that Chip Kelly has been castrated. Knowing you’ll need a lot of points and then kicking a FG from 4th and 4 inside the red zone is an absolutely ridiculous, suboptimal, indefensible, (insert own adjective here) decision. It’s a decision that "Chip Kelly" is not supposed to get wrong, and I’m at a complete loss as to why he did.

Something to watch going forwards. If Chip isn’t aggressive, then he isn’t really "Chip", he’s just some guy.

- Lane Johnson…needs to be much better. When you take an OT (or anyone) in the top 5, he absolutely MUST be a "stud". So far, Johnson isn’t close. Yes he’s a rookie and we should expect some inconsistency, but we should also see flashes of greatness, and I don’t think we’re getting that.

- It’s important to keep things in context, especially this early in the season. The Eagles have 3 losses against teams with a combined record of 10-2. The next three opponents have a combined record of 2-10. As a result, the next few games will tell us a lot more about the Eagles than these last three have. Denver and KC are ranked 1st and 3rd in point differential right now, and both teams are undefeated. Losses there don’t mean anything other than that the Eagles are not among the best teams in the league (which we already knew). Here is the Eagles remaining schedule:

How many of those games really scare you? The fact is, the Eagles probably just finished their toughest stretch of games. I know they’ve looked bad, but remember that they won’t be playing anyone nearly as good as Denver for the rest of the season.

- The Cowboys might not be good. Dallas has 2 wins, but they’ve come against St. Louis and the Giants. Not exactly on par with KC and Denver. I still believe the Eagles can be the best team in this division.

- Next week is VERY important. Probably doesn’t need to be said, but getting a win against the Giants, who look AWFUL, is vital. Either the Eagles are as good as I think they are (in which case they’ll win comfortably), or they’ll lose to the winless Giants (in which case they’re as bad as the national pundits say they are). Regardless, we’ll know a lot more than we know today.

That’s all. Keep your head up. No reason to panic yet. If the Eagles lose next week, though, then you have my permission to lose your shit.

Peyton Manning threw for infinity yards and infinity touchdowns as the Eagles fell to the Broncos in Denver on Sunday afternoon.

The 1-2 Eagles entered this game as huge underdogs to the 3-0 Broncos.

First Quarter

Eagles get the ball first. A three and out to open the game. Punt.

Denver's turn. Too easy. Peyton Manning puts a nifty drive together that ends with a Wes Welker TD. 9 plays, 74 yards. 7-0, Broncos.

Eagles driving. A couple of Vick runs, Shady mixed in. Oh hey, a James Casey sighting! First career catch as an Eagle. PHI in the red zone... Brent Celek drops a pass on third down. Eagles kick a FG instead of going for it. Not liking that decision. 7-3, Broncos.

Trindon Holiday is dangerous on kick returns and he proved it with a long KR for a TD. Looks like there was a hold on Jordan Poyer, but no call. Makes the Eagles redzone FG decision even worse. 14-3, Broncos.

Eagles back on offense. Lots of Vick scrambling. Bryce Brown getting some carries. DeSean Jackson goes down after a catch, but only misses one snap.

Second Quarter

Eagles move into scoring position but settle for a FG again. Why aren't they going for it? 14-6, Broncos.

A third down stop for the Eagles defense! Well, that was unexpected. Denver almost broke off a huge play after Eric Decker burned Cary Williams in coverage, but Decker couldn't make the catch.

Eagles driving. Tough catch by DJacc gets challenged. but it's definitely a catch. Play stands, good call. Bryce Brown 35 yard run sets up the Eagles in scoring position... and a short Chris Polk 4 yard TD run caps off the drive! Hey, the Eagles are in this thing?! 14-13, Broncos.

To no one's surprise, Broncos answer with a drive of their own. Knowshon Moreno TD. Eagles struggling to defend the run as well as the pass. 21-13, Broncos.

Eagles ball. Driving down the field... 4th and 6 on Denver's 37. Not a fourth down conversion attempt. Not a field goal. A punt. A punt! Why? Low net yards. Where's the aggressiveness?

Denver's ball. A Cedric Thornton sack on Peyton Manning helps force a stop with 18 seconds left in the half. That, and a silly decision by Knowshon Moreno to push DeMeco Ryans which forced Denver out of FG position. Broncos punt.

Eagles kneel and go to half-time. It's a one possession game. Not too bad, huh?

Third Quarter

Broncos on offense to start the second half. Running the ball effortlessly. Broncos capitalize on the drive with a Demaryius Thomas TD. On the play before the TD, the Eagles were charged on a HIGHLY questionable pass interference call on Bradley Fletcher in the endzone. Gift call for the Broncos. Denver was likely to score anyway. 28-13, Broncos.

The Eagles punt on their next drive, and again to no one's surprise the Broncos capitalize on an offensive drive. Demaryius Thomas TD. The blow out is on. 35-13, Broncos.

More blow out. Welker TD. 42-13, Broncos.

Fourth Quarter

MORE BLOW OUT. Eagles have a punt blocked. 49-13, Broncos.

Alex Henery misses a 46 yard FG. He's 2-5 at kicks from 40-49 yards this year. Not good.

Peyton Manning is done for the day. Broncos backup QB Brock Osweiler in. It's that kind of game, folks.

Broncos 53 yard FG. 52-13, Broncos.

Just under 7 minutes left, Nick Foles comes in for the Birds.

Hey, a Jeff Maehl garbage TD. 52-20, Broncos.

Final Thoughts:

Philadelphia drops to 1-3. The three losses are against AFC teams. The Eagles are still 1-0 in the NFC/NFC East.

The Eagles offense is very much legit. They became the first team in NFL history with 1000+ passing yards and 750+ rushing yards in the first 4 games of a season. But at the same time they only put up 13 points.

Michael Vick threw for 248 yards on 14/27 passing, 0 TD and 0 INT. He also ran for 41 yards on 8 attempts. LeSean McCoy ran for 73 yards on 16 carries (4.6 avg).

Everyone knew the Eagles would struggle on defense. They simply lack the talent and it's not like their coaching staff is top notch either. Peyton Manning is the best QB in the league and their offense is almost unstoppable.

An annoying part of today's game, though: Chip Kelly's lack of aggressive play. As I documented multiple times in this recap, Chip had the chance to go for it on fourth down but simply didn't. Twice, that meant settling for FGs instead of TDs. No onside kicks or fakes, either. Maybe that's asking for too much but what did they have to lose?

Hoping to beat the best team in the NFL by being conservative is a flawed strategy. I'm not sure why Kelly was so passive today after being known as an aggressive guy in college.

Ultimately, it didn't matter though. It was a blow out. There's a lot of blame to go around. Chip's lack of aggression didn't single handily cost the game. The defense was bad. The offense didn't put up enough points. Special teams gave up 14 points (KR for TD, blocked punt).

Look, the sky is not falling. Losing to the best team in the NFL on the road is not the end of the world. The Eagles still play in a terrible division and they have some VERY winnable games coming up (at Giants, at Buccaneers).
