Philadelphia missed out on a number of chances in a close loss to the Chargers.

After a 33-30 loss to the San Diego Chargers, it was hard to not think about how the Eagles were so close to winning on Sunday. Philadelphia seemed only one play away from ending up with a different result. If they had just capitalized on that one chance. Unfortunately for the Eagles, that wasn't the case.

It was never just one play, either. It was a number of missed opportunities. Chip Kelly, along with several Eagles players, discussed their frustration with these type of plays:

"Yeah, obviously. We left points out there offensively. You can't do that against a good team. So when you play against a good quarterback, you have to be as sharp as you can. I think offensively had a touchdown called back, had a drop. Missed a field goal. You can come down to ‑‑ in a game like this that is decided on a field goal at the end of the game, you can take a pick and look at every play, but to me, it's not nit‑picking. One play is the difference in a game and we talked about it all the time. You don't know when that play is going to impact the game. And we have to understand how important it is to make plays when you have an opportunity to make them."

Re-watching the game only confirmed this notion, except this time I recorded all of these moments.

Eagles

1) A long catch and run by LeSean McCoy set the Eagles up in scoring position. The Eagles ran the ball on first and second then threw to James Casey on third. It looked like a completed pass but Casey did not "complete the process" as he attempted to make the diving catch. The non-catch meant 3 points for Philly instead of 7. (Q1- 5:36)

2) Vick to DeSean Jackson deep was incomplete. Jackson was 3 or 4 yards past his defender. DJacc caught the ball but only managed to get one foot in-bounds. Instead it was no good and the Eagles had to punt. (Q2 - 13:38)

3) Brandon Boykin forced a fumble on Antonio Gates near the goal line. The Eagles couldn't do anything with this possession. Points after turnovers is a key statistic for Chip Kelly, as has been discussed here before at BGN. (Q2 - 2:21)

4) The Eagles forced another turnover. Vick tried to hit DeSean deep yet again but overthrew him by a good number of yards. Jackson was wide open and it would have been an easy TD. (Q2 - 0:25)

5) Missed field goal by Alex Henery right before the half that would have tied the game at 13-13. (Q2 - 0:09)

6) Malcolm Floyd got drilled and it looked like he fumbled. The injury was extremely unfortunate and I don't mean to take away from that. Here is hoping Floyd recovers well. (Q3 - 14:52)

7) The say "the third time is a charm" but that wasn't the case for the Eagles when Vick and DeSean tried to connect on another deep ball. This time the ball was slightly overthrown; probably by a matter of inches. DeSean had it on his hands but dropped it. (Q3 - 9:53)

8) DeSean had a touchdown called back due to an illegal formation penalty on Lane Johnson. The penalty probably didn't even have an effect on the outcome... such as a holding penalty could lead to a long run. No matter, though. Seven points off the board. The Eagles would settle for a FG instead. (Q3 - 7:55)

9) San Diego had their way with the Eagles defense on third down finishing with a 10-15 conversion rate. The Eagles earned a stop late in the third but it was erased by a Patrick Chung defensive holding penalty. Big letdown. (Q3 - 3:43)

10) Chargers fumble on a kickoff return after an Eagles TD! The ball looked like it rolled right to Henery but along with a several other Eagles, he couldn't contain it. Even the broadcast commentator thought it looked like a sure Eagles recovery at first, but alas, it was not meant to be. (Q4 - 6:53)

11) Michael Vick had to leave for a play due to injury and Nick Foles entered the game. The team was in scoring position and threw a fade pass to one of their shortest receivers (DeSean). Once again, Philly settled for a field goal instead of being up by four. (Q4 - 1:50)

---------

In the interest of objectivity, the Eagles were not the only team who didn't capitalize on several opportunities. The Chargers had their fair share of blunders as well.

Chargers

1) Michael Vick "fumbled" when he attempted a throw and then tried to tuck the pass back in. He lost control and the ball luckily rolled out of bounds. That could have been an easy TD for the Chargers. (Q2 - 13:12)

2) Already mentioned this one from the Eagles side, but Antonio Gates fumbled at the goal line thanks to a strip from Boykin. Inches away from being a TD. (Q2 - 2:21)

3) Right after that turnover, the Chargers nearly tackled LeSean McCoy in the endzone for a safety. McCoy had to dodge a number of tackles to avoid that disaster. (Q2 - 2:20)

4) Trent Cole forced a fumble in Chargers' scoring territory. (Q2 - 1:00)

5) Antonio Gates, being "covered" by rookie Earl Wolff, drops a TD in the endzone. (Q4 - 11:39)

---------

The Eagles offense certainly did a lot to win yesterday by putting up 30 points. In no way am I blaming the loss on them. The defense struggled to do their part. That unit absolutely needs to do better. But could the offense have done more? Considering these chances, I would say so.

Ultimately, there are missed opportunities likes these ones in every game. It's no reason to be ever be a sore loser. Instead, the Eagles just need to do a better job of making the most out of these opportunities in future situations.

Who were the best/worst graded Eagles players against the Chargers?

Pro Football Focus is a site that grades NFL player performances. Let's take a look at what they had to say about the performances in Philadelphia's loss to the Chargers.

PFF offers explanation on their grading system on their website. Read more about that here.

OFFENSE

Best

LeSean McCoy +4.5
Evan Mathis +4.5
Jason Peters +3.3
Jason Kelce +3.1
DeSean Jackson +2.8
Michael Vick +1.7

Worst

Lane Johnson -3.2
Bryce Brown -1.1
Todd Herremans -1.0

Analysis: The Eagles offense was obviously great against the Chargers. The majority of the offensive line played well and the Eagles playmakers did just that: make plays. Michael Vick quarterbacked a great game.

The weak spots among the OL were Lane Johnson and Todd Herremans. Lane looked like a rookie at times and struggled in pass protection. He also committed two penalties, one which erased a DeSean Jackson touchdown. Herremans has had a shaky start to his 2013 campaign. Brown received a negative grade due to a penalty.

DEFENSE

Best

Trent Cole +3.4
Cedric Thornton +2.2
Brandon Boykin +1.8
Fletcher Cox +1.4

Worst

Mychal Kendricks -6.5
Cary Williams -4.4
Patrick Chung -3.8
Nate Allen -3.8
Damion Square -1.8
Clifton Geathers -1.5
Connor Barwin -1.0

Analysis: Unlike the offense, the Eagles defense played poorly. There were a few bright spots, however.

Boykin was not only the Eagles best cornerback on the field but the best member of the whole secondary. Thornton and Cox specifically graded well against the run, as was Cole.

Kendricks was the Eagles' worst graded defender. His worst rating was in coverage, but he also graded poorly against the run. Kendricks missed 4 tackles against the Chargers.

Cary played well against Washington but struggled against the Chargers. He was targeted 9 times and allowed 8 receptions and allowed a 148.1 QB rating when thrown at. He also missed 3 tackles and committed 3 penalties.

It is no surprise to see the Eagles safeties played poorly. Chung and Allen were horrible in coverage.

Geathers only played 17 snaps but was graded poorly against the run and the pass. Barwin's poor grade comes from a lack of pass rush.

He was rotated with Earl Wolff, who did not play a defensive snap against the Redskins. With Brandon Hughes having returned from injury, Jordan Poyer did not play on defense.

Special Teams:

Among the players with the most ST reps were: Colt Anderson (76%), Jake Knott (76%), James Casey (56%) Kurt Coleman (56%), Brandon Graham (56%), Zach Ertz (47%), Najee Goode (47%), Chris Polk (47%), Earl Wolff (44%), Casey Matthews (35%).

Nate Allen sucks... | Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Well, the defense isn't that good after all. One week is evidently all you need to make a difference on defense. If not, maybe that is just an Eagles thing.

I will be among the first to admit that I did not and still (for the most part) do not see this team being very good. While I picked them the last two weeks in our game predictions, I am not sure I really believed that the team was good enough to start 2-0, no matter which game they won of the first two. I just don't think the defense has been upgraded and the secondary is somewhat neglected. Today's game proved that statement correct.

Too many times during Sunday's game, the Eagles offense would respond to a Chargers strike, only for the defense to give up another good drive to the Bolts. I have defended Nate Allen almost religiously, but I am extremely sad to say that I am 100% incorrect when it comes to his Philadelphia career being salvageable. He was embarrassing.

I will not put this 33-30 loss solely on the Eagles, as Philip Rivers was fantastic. He and Eddie Royal were a big problem and it showed early and often. Mike McCoy played the clock like a violin and that is pretty impressive for a rookie head coach.

For how poorly the Eagles defense played, the offense was again mostly terrific. There were times where there were communication issues and protection breakdowns, but for the most part, Michael Vick played very well and continually made the right decisions. DeSean Jackson was fantastic throughout the game and LeSean McCoy continues to show that he is the best dual-purpose running in the league.

Anyway, let's get to the praising/hating on our team after a pretty big bummer of a lose.

Hot

DeSean Jackson: This guy is so electric, you would think he plays for San Diego (get it? crickets...). He was really an all-around wide receiver for the second game in a row and finished with a crazy nine catches for 193 and a touchdown. Absolutely awesome. He does need to watch his emotions though.

LeSean McCoy: On Monday, he took it to the Redskins by ground and on Sunday, he took the Chargers by air. McCoy had a new career high reception with a grab that he took 70 yards down-field in the first quarter. He seemed to disappear a bit down the stretch but that could be because he injured his knee early in the game. McCoy is likely to finish at least in the top five for all-purpose yards if he plays out the season. He finished with 53 yards on the ground and 114 receiving yards (167 total yards).

Michael Vick: The guy made solid decisions all game and did not turn the ball over. He threw for a career-high 428 yards, two touchdowns and added 23 yards and a touchdown on the ground. He never quit and once again, you have to admire that he is making good decisions with the ball, even under pressure.

Zach Ertz: I am usually pretty hard on Ertz for his drops, but he was legit on Sunday. He had two very impressive RAC catches in the game when it mattered. He finished with two catches for 58-yard.

Casey Matthews: He is unfairly disliked by Eagles fans, but he is also the proud owner of a shiny new fumble recovery that was fantastic. After Brandon Boykin (more on him later) knocked the ball out of Antonio Gates' hands, Matthews was the man to secure the ball. He got there in a hurry and he handled the ball well.

Brandon Boykin: He was beat a few times in coverage, but for the most part held his own and was an eager tackler. He forced a touchdown-saving forced fumble, which was purely a hustle play. I wouldn't be surprised if he was a starter by the end of year.

Riley Cooper: He had just 23 receiving yards and a touchdown, but the score really showed off his improved use of his size. He blocked well from what I saw on first viewing.

Connor Barwin: He did work on the sack that saw him throw D.J. Fluker to the ground. He was so-so in coverage.

Trent Cole: He has looked solid on against the run and has gotten pressure pretty regularly the first two weeks. He got another forced fumble today and was great. He seems to be adjusting much better than he did in the preseason.

Not

Special Teams, except for Donnie Jones and Colt Anderson: They force a fumble and don't secure it because their kicker is afraid to get hurt, but that was real waste of opportunity. Speaking of Alex Henery, I have said it before, but I don't really trust him. He is not a bad kicker, but after three years, I am not sure I think he is anything more than average. That 46-yard miss killed a ton of momentum.

Cary Williams: What a difference a week makes? Williams had three pass interference calls. One...two...three. He also missed several tackles. Frankly, that is so unacceptable that he should have been benched. Lucky for him, the Eagles have little talent behind him.

Brent Celek: Was somehow non-existent, which is bad when you are the top tight end on the roster.

Pat Chung: He had a PI-plenty and got beat a few times.

Nate Allen: Where do I begin? He single-handedly gave up two touchdowns and was burnt a few times. He made several mental errors and never recovered. Allen at this point is a serious liability against the pass and the rush. Earl Wolff out-played him (barely but still).

Chip Kelly Challenges: For the second week in a row, Kelly missed on a challenge that clearly was not going to be reversed. I understand it was a split decision but his booth guys have to do a better job.

Miscellaneous Musings

I understand what Chip Kelly was trying to do with the timeouts (I think), but I felt he was a bit too coy. It seemed like he was keeping the Chargers active to force a turnover but it didn't work. That is the only reason I could see for handling the timeouts how he did.

Vick's "somewhat" fumble in the first that went out of bounds was really just a "freak" error. A pump fake sometimes moves on the hand and that time it moved a bit too much to secure with a single hand.

Vinny Curry was inactive again...hmmm.

I want to call out Eagles fans (in a good way) for their handling of Malcolm Floyd at the stadium. When the entire country was hoping for our fanbase to look like uncivilized jerks, Lincoln Financial Field showed respect, concern and even encouragement toward the wounded player as he laid on the field. The ultimate sign of respect with the cheers was great as well. #GoldStar

I felt that Billy Davis had a decent gameplan, but his players missed a lot of tackles and the Chargers made a ton of contested catches.

My girlfriend thinks Chip Kelly's signs are very cute, apparently.

Make no mistake, Thursday is going to be tough for the Eagles. The Chiefs beat the Cowboys and they are 2-0, this could be a really rough affair on NFL Network.

Speaking of NFC East teams losing, the entire division kept pace on in Week 2 with all four teams losing to a non-divisional opponent. The Cowboys lost to the Chiefs, the Skins dismantled by the Packers and the Giants were blown out at home against the Broncos. The Cowboys are now tied with the Eagles at 1-1, while the Giants and Redskins are 0-2. It's safe to say the Eagles could still be in the driver seat of a division that has looked awfully unimpressive.

The Eagles had a number of chances that they failed to capitalize on against the Chargers.

Missed opportunities. Wasted chances. Unfulfilled potential.

Along with a poor defensive performance from Philadelphia, these failures contributed to the Eagles 30-33 loss to the Chargers on Sunday afternoon.

A missed field goal. Dropped passes. A defense that could not force a punt. None of these things are uncommon in football. They are weekly issues to varying extents, but today they seemed to hurt the Eagles extra hard. Philadelphia was so close to winning. If that one extra opportunity had gone their way, it could have been a different game.

Even Eagles Head Coach Chip Kelly felt the Eagles left points on the field.

Michael Vick was asked about the three times he missed DeSean Jackson with the deep ball before finally connecting with Jackson on the fourth attempt.

"You are not going to hit all of them. You are lucky if you hit one. We are professionals so we try and capitalize on those opportunities, but you got to hit them, you’re not going to hit them all. We had our fair share of plays today, and I think we can get better."

LeSean McCoy called the Eagles' missed opportunities frustrating.

"I think it’s always frustrating, as an offense when you can’t really produce how you want to. It was always a play too short, or you don’t quite get it so it’s always frustrating. But it’s a long game, a long season so you keep fighting, keep battling. I think we did that today, I think today we kept fighting and fighting but we came up short today, we didn’t get it done."

...and DeSean Jackson expressed his frustrations as well.

"That’s very frustrating, honestly. The touchdown got called back, there was one I caught out of bounds when my right foot stepped out, and then the overthrown one that slipped off of my hands. But that’s part of the game. We just have to keep going and keep working. Overall, I felt I had a great game. We still lost the game, and there are things that we can do as an offense and as a team overall to help us win these type of games. I think [San Diego] did a great job, and that offense put a lot of pressure on our defense. Our defense came up with two turnovers, but there was something about that game. We just felt like we kept plugging away and plugging away. We knew we were going to have to score a touchdown on that last drive, and we just came up short. Hopefully it’s something that we can learn from. It’s a long season, and teams are going to do different things to try to take us away. Today they kind of stacked the box and tried to stop the run, but as you can see, our passing game can be just as effective as our running game."

Far from a polished product, the Eagles still have a lot of work to do. A positive outlook is that the Eagles are creating opportunities for themselves. Now they just need to find a way to refine their game and capitalize on these chances.

The Chargers failed to slow down Chip Kelly's high tempo offense, but the Eagles failed to slow the Bolts low tempo offense as the birds fall to 1-1 on the season.

The Eagles opened their first home game of the 2013 season against the San Diego Chargers.

First Quarter

The Eagles received the ball and got a quick couple of first downs before having to punt.

A Connor Barwin sack on Chargers QB Phillip Rivers forced the Chargers to settle for a field goal. 3-0, Chargers.

A huge 70 yard catch and run from Vick to McCoy set the Eagles up in the red zone. It looked like James Casey caught a TD pass from Vick on the goal line, but it turns out he dropped it. The Eagles settle for the FG. 3-3, tie game.

Chip Kelly challenged a Chargers catch for a first down in the redzone. The ruling on the field was held. Chip is now 0-2 on challenges.

Second Quarter

The Chargers capped off their drive with a TD by Eddie Royal. 10-3, Chargers.

Sloppy Eagles showed up again as the Eagles went three and out. Just not an inspiring start by Philadelphia.

The Chargers got the ball back and ran the ball right down the heart of the Eagles defense. Rivers was sharp as well: he didn't even have an incompletion until 8 minutes left in the 2nd. And that incompletion was a drop by Danny Woodhead. The Eagles got a stop and the Chargers hit a FG. 13-3, Chargers.

The Eagles answered back quickly with a score of their own. A 40 yard catch by DeSean set up a 13 yard TD throw from Vick to Cooper. The 4 play, 75 yard drive (1 minute 20 seconds) gave Philly new life. 13-10, Eagles.

The Chargers were extremely close to scoring a TD again until... fumble! Boykin stripped Antonio Gates right near the goal line and Casey Matthews (!) recovered. The Eagles couldn't make anything of the turnover and had to punt.

San Diego got the ball back... and fumbled again! Trent Cole forced fumble on Ryan Mathews. Turnovers are key for an Eagles defense that doesn't seem to be able to force stops.

Alex Henery missed a 46 yard FG as the first half expired.

Third Quarter

Macolm Floyd took a vicious hit from DeMeco Ryans. Floyd was down on the field for several minutes before having to be carried off on a stretcher. Yikes. Opposing team or not, it's a really unfortunate sight. Eagles fans clapped in support of the injured Floyd as he was taken off the field.

To add insult to injury, the Chargers only dressed 4 wide receivers for Sunday's game. Losing Floyd put them at only three.

No matter, as the Chargers drove down the field yet again and scored a TD. Rivers to Eddie Royal. 20-10, Chargers.

Vick targets DeSean for a deep bomb for the third time and it looks like it might... be... good....! No. Dropped. The Eagles left way too many points on the board at this point.

Shortly after, Vick threw a TD to DeSean Jackson but it was called back due to an illegal formation call on Lane Johnson. Yet again, more points left out there! The Eagles settled for a FG, Alex Henery from 48 yards. 20-13, Chargers.

The Chargers got the ball back and FINALLY PUNTED. At this point there were 5 minutes left in the third. Kind of revealing as to how the Eagles defense has been, huh?

FINALLY: Vick connects with Jackson on a deep bomb for a 61 yard Eagles touchdown. New game! Tie game, 20-20.

Fourth Quarter

33 field goal after a long drive from the Chargers. The Eagles just couldn't get off the field on third down. 23-20, Chargers.

A great drive by the Eagles put them back in the lead with 7:06 remaining. Vick ran it in himself a 2 yard TD. for 27-23, Eagles.

On the following kickoff, the Chargers KR broke off a decent return and then fumbled! Henery had a chance to recover the ball but couldn't. Chargers recover. That would have been a huge opportunity for the Birds. Instead, the Chargers move the ball for a TD. 30, 27 Chargers.

A Philadelphia drive into scoring position saw Vick get injured in the red zone. Nick Foles came in for one play before Vick returned. Henery kicks a FG to tie the game. Tied, 30-30.

The Chargers get the ball back with time, lead a drive down the field, kick the FG. Welpadelphia. 7 seconds left. 33-30, Chargers.

Final Thoughts:

Football is a game of inches, as the cliche goes, and the inches weren't always on the Eagles' side. Philadelphia left so many points on the board. Missed opportunities galore. Ultimately, it cost them the game.

With this team, there are flashes of what they could be one day. The potential is there. But they are still very much a work in progress. The defense simply lacks talent in the secondary and couldn't generate any kind of substantial pass rush on Rivers. While we're at it, they couldn't stop the run either. Nate Allen in particular was a liability. Respect to the Chargers and Rivers, who is still very much a good QB when he has time to throw.

The offense is without a doubt the life of this Eagles team.

Eagles are now 1-1. Stay tuned to BGN for more coverage of this game.
