Looking back at how the Birds were able to win it all.

The Philadelphia Eagles survived the loss of franchise quarterback Carson Wentz, and eventually thrived, by being innovative with their offensive concepts and adapting to their players’ strengths. This flexibility and forward thinking allowed them advance past the Atlanta Falcons, carve up the Minnesota Vikings, and out-sprint the New England Patriots in a wild track meet on their way to a Super Bowl Championship.

Credit can be given to head coach Doug Pederson, first and foremost, for being receptive to his coaching staff and their suggestions. Too often teams fail to evolve in season, relying heavily on their offseason installs and becoming predictable in their scripting. This was not the case for Pederson in 2017. He showed the ability to craft a new gameplan each week before unfurling a diabolical set of creative designs in the playoffs.

It would be cumbersome to include every inventive creation that sprang forth from the Philadelphia think tank this season, so the focus here will be strictly on the playoffs. Here are the best play designs from the 2017 playoffs, in no particular order:

BUNCH WING COUNTER (Divisional Round, Atlanta Falcons)

3rd & 3 @ ATL 24, 2nd Quarter (12:13), 3-0 ATL

One area in which the Eagles excelled this year was giving traditional looks for defenses to key on and then putting said defenses in a blender with a new twist. In this case, the alignment and toss action by RB Jay Ajayi screams Toss Bunch Crunch. Here’s how the assignments would look if the Eagles had run a conventional toss:

The idea of Toss Bunch Crunch is to have the two outside bunch players seal with crack blocks with the inside bunch man and playside tackle kicking out. Defenses have to be fast to flow to not only defeat the cracks, but to work through the wall the offense is trying to create. In short, the defense can not hesitate or it’s toast.

The Eagles have two of the three elements of Toss Bunch Crunch in play to sell their deception. WR Torrey Smith and TE Zach Ertz come down at the snap with crack blocks and Ajayi takes a toss track. The defenses reads this action and knows they’re about to have to chase down the most common pitch play in the league.

The two players that would normally kick-out to lead the toss on the outside, LT Lane Johnson and WR Nelson Agholor, take a different path. Johnson pulls and to his left, with Agholor behind him to receive a hand-off from Foles. On the left side of the formation, LG Steven Wisniewski pins the 1 tech, Halapoulivaati Vaitai seals and widens DE Adrian Clairborne, and the backside LB Deion Jones vacates his area by running off to Antarctica. This creates a huge void for Agholor to exploit, which he does for a chunk play.

This conversion set up a goal-line situation for the Eagles, leading to 4th and GL on the Falcons 1-yard line.

G-LEAD (Divisional Round, Atlanta Falcons)

4th & GL @ ATL 1, 2nd Quarter (10:32), 3-0 ATL

This playcall resembles something that could be mistaken, at first glance, as Power. Instead, the concept used is called G-Lead. So what is the difference between Power and G-Lead?

They’re nearly twin running concepts with one major difference. Instead of the backside guard pulling, G-Lead pulls the play-side guard, which in this case is Brandon Brooks.

This allows you to get your most athletic guard pulling and still run to his side of the formation. It also hits quicker than Power because your key block is coming from a short distance.

The G-Lead can also be called G-Kick, as the intention is to kick out the end man on the line of scrimmage. It doesn’t always work this way, depending on the angle of the force defender, it’s not a kick out, it’s a log block.

On a “kick” you would see the play-side guard engage the end man on the line of scrimmage from inside-out, with the aim of creating a lane inside of his butt. That’s where Blount initially presses his aiming point, but seeing the adjustment from Brooks, he bounces to the outside.

Watch it again in slow motion.

Like Power, the LT Lane Johnson and the TE Brent Celek down block. Brooks pulls to the play-side, which we’ll break down in detail in a moment.

Center Jason Kelce has a reach block, but in the confined spaces of the goal-line, can’t quite get to the outside of his man to seal him. Still, he gets a piece of DT Grady Jarrett, which proves pivotal as Jarrett was nearly able to chase down Blount to the corner.

Brooks shows off the athleticism and technique that got him to the Pro Bowl this year. His first step drives hard off his left, inside foot while his right foot pulls straight back in a “bucket step”. This turns his shoulders perpendicular to the line as he shoots his left foot in front of his bucket step.

He is now at the proper depth of 2 yards behind the line and needs to locate his target with his eyes. By his fifth step, he’s decided the blocking technique required. The end man on the line of scrimmage OLB De’Vondre Campbell, left intentionally unblocked, has pressed inside off the butts of the down blocks. This means Brooks needs to log, not kick.

On a log block, the intention is to turn the defender from facing towards the backfield into facing the sideline, walling him off. It’s called a log block because Brooks rolls his man’s shoulders from facing one way to another, like you would roll a log. Brooks pulls this off masterfully, engaging Campbell with length while his hands/hips/feet all work in unison.

With the play sealed off, TE Trey Burton, acting as a fullback, gets a key block on LB LaRoy Reynolds to win the corner. Blount outruns Jarrett and S Kemal Ishmael to the end zone for a touchdown on a ballsy call from head coach Doug Pederson.

COUNTER WING PLAY ACTION (NFC Championship, Minnesota Vikings)

3rd & 4 @ PHI 14, 3rd Quarter (5:00), 31-7 PHI

Part of successful playcalling is putting a concept on tape, showing the same set up in a similar situation, and playing off that previous tape with a new wrinkle.

This is, for all intents and purposes, garbage time. But as Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer pointed out coming into the game, the scoreboard doesn’t matter to Pederson, who will dial it up no matter how dead and buried the other team may be.

In this case, the Eagles show a similar look to the first play cited in this article, the Counter Wing which saw an inside hand-off to Agholor. The Vikings defense has seen this on tape and a flurry of communication happens before the snap. Every defender is alert to the possibility of a hand-off to Agholor.

If the Vikings defense had a motive to bite to the opposite of the strength of the formation anticipating some chicanery, the Eagles give them extra incentive. The zone steps to the left by the offensive line helps create a flow away from where the routes are developing.

Not only do the Eagles run play action, but RB Corey Clement darts to the flats and the combination of routes resembles a “spot concept”. This provides a defined horizontal and vertical reads for QB Nick Foles.

Zach Ertz gets a quick chip on the EMLOS, simulating a blown block, and finds a void in the defense to sit in for an easy catch and run that moves the chains.

POST, OUT-AND UP (NFC Championship, Minnesota Vikings)

1st & 10 @ PHI 31, 2nd Quarter (:23), 21-7 PHI

I could use a bunch of fancy coach-speak to explain this play but it comes down to two major factors.

First, the Eagles play the situation against the Vikings beautifully. With only 23 seconds remaining on the clock, the Vikings defenders are going to be aggressive in covering the sidelines.

Second, Doug Pederson doesn’t care about who he’s attacking, he’s going to run his offense. Vikings safety Harrison Smith is one of the best in the league at his position and most coaches would prefer stay away from him. Instead, the Eagles put him in constant conflict and even outright attacked him, as they did on this play.

To start, the offensive line does well to pick up the blitz that comes heavy to the left side. With WR Torrey Smith running a post, the Eagles run a variation on the post-wheel. Replacing the wheel, Ertz runs a similar route, the out-and-up, which is designed to stretch the defense vertically all the same but integrates situational deception.

With the sideline approaching Smith anticipates the throw and bites hard on the out. Taking advantage of Smith’s aggression, Ertz uncovers up the sideline and ultimately gets into range for more points on the way to a 38-7 win.

Hi-Lo Mesh Wheel (Super Bowl, New England Patriots)

I highlighted this play in “Corey Clement, the Unexpected Hero”, but it’s such a fitting design that highlights all the fantastic parts about what the coaching staff accomplished this year, so here it is again.

Incorporating elements of the Chip Kelly playbook to make Foles more comfortable and utilizing an undrafted free agent running back in a key situation is a microcosm of what made this season so special.

Philly Special (Super Bowl, New England Patriots)

4th & GL @ NE 1, 2nd Quarter (:38), 15-12 PHI

The most iconic play in Eagles history, the Philly Special blends creativity, deception, and big balls. The most impressive part about this play is the exchange that happened before hand. With a crucial 4th down looming, Foles asked Pederson if he was ready to risk it all. Pederson looked Foles in the eyes for a full beat, saw a reflection of his own daring nature, and decided to put the fate of the Super Bowl in the literal hands of his backup quarterback.

So much salt there should be no issues with the roads

The Eagles have defeated 13 different teams this season: the Redskins, Giants, Chargers, Cardinals, Panthers, 49ers, Broncos, Cowboys, Bears, Rams, Raiders, Falcons and Vikings. After each game everyone associated with the losing side has taken their lumps, especially as the season progressed and the Eagles looked more and more like one of the best teams in the league and the Eagles handed out blowouts in half their wins.

But not Minnesota. No team’s fans and media have reacted as poorly as the Vikings. They’ve been worse than their team was. The piece de reistance might be this column by the Star Tribune’s Jim Souhan. We don’t even get to the body of the work before the grapes get sour.

At Minnesota’s Super Bowl party, who’s the guest of ‘honor’?

‘Honor’. Hmm... well, it won’t be birds, since the Vikings stadium kills them in droves. Is it Garrison Keillor?

Minnesota this week will host one team that the nation loves to hate and one fan base that deserves to be hated.

I don’t know what schedule you’re looking at but the Lakers don’t visit the Timberwolves until the 15th.

“Deserves to be hated”? No Jim, Eagles fans are already hated. Despised. We wear it as a badge of honor, because when dimwits like you go with unimaginative insults while overlooking 49ers fans who have assaulted Vikings fans along with stabbing or shooting others, or that Texans fan who destroyed a Vikings fan’s lawn ornament and then continued to assault the Vikings fan with a knife.

Let’s welcome the nation to Minneapolis, where we will spend the next week exploring answers to the question: What if the NFL presented the Super Bowl From Hell, and it froze over?

Bad weather games can be really entertaining, though a Super Bowl From Hell would presumably feature the Browns, so he’s got a point. A Super Bowl featuring the top seeds from each conference, which is the case with the Patriots and Eagles, is a really good matchup. Enjoy watching reruns of Shark Tank instead of the game because you can’t handle it.

Take entitled Patriots fans, violent Eagles fans, add black ice, and you get a smoothie that tastes nastier than kale.

Jim, you’re not going to have to worry about black ice, because you’ve got enough salt here to cover the twin cities.

This could not have worked out any worse for Minnesota. We will host one team that the nation loves to hate and one fan base that deserves to be hated as the Vikings become the first NFL team ever to welcome to its stadium for the Super Bowl the team that beat it to advance to it. It’s like the Packers played a practical joke on the entire state.

Oh it could be worse. They could have gotten blown out by the Packers.

What did Minnesotans do to deserve this? Other than support a team that gave up 38 unanswered points to a backup quarterback in the NFC Championship Game?

They did put their hope in backup quarterback Case Keenum, but if you’re looking for a karmic reason, it’s because Vikings fans gave child abuser Adrian Peterson a standing ovation when he returned from a year of suspension. Or that the stadium wouldn’t let homeless people sleep there during life-threatening weather. Or hiring a snake oil “Gen Z advisor”. Or that their special teams coordinator is a raging homophobe. There’s a lot of material to work with.

If you are one of the lucky locals with a ticket to the big game, you may feel obligated to root for one of these teams. This will be like choosing between Vader and Voldemort.

“I have only seen two movies.”

The Eagles are a well-run, well-coached team filled with spare and reclaimed parts. If only their fans hadn’t behaved like felons last weekend, they’d become Minnesota’s home team for the next week.

They should have beat children, then Vikings fans would love them.

But what we learned last weekend is that the Eagles have the worst fans in sports. Grandma-cursing, throwing-full-beers-at-heads, groping, punching, gesturing, mob-mentality, greased-pole-climbing losers.

Oh my god they made gestures. The horror.

There are those relying on clichés to defend the behavior of Eagles fans at the NFC Championship game. One bad apple? This fan base is a rotting orchard. Eagles fans staged a campaign to intimidate or harm anyone wearing purple last Sunday, and the Eagles and the NFL should be held responsible.

And there are those relying on clichés to attack Eagles fans.

Sad!

There’s been no shortage of talk about how Vikings fans were treated poorly while visiting Philadelphia to see Minnesota’s blowout loss to the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field last Sunday.

But what you may not have realized is that Eagles fans actually treated Vikings fans WAY worse than anyone previously thought. I have found some EXCLUSIVE evidence on Twitter that proves as much.

A historic performance

When a quarterback throws seven touchdown passes in a game, that would more often than not be their crowning achievement. When a quarterback goes a full season throwing 27 touchdowns, with only two interceptions, that typically becomes their crowning achievement.

Nick Foles is in the rare company that has accomplished both of those feats, in fact he’s the only quarterback to do both. While those accomplishments were historic, Foles’ career performance came on the penultimate stage this past weekend against the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship game.

I’m going to take a look at some of the biggest plays Foles and the rest of the Eagles’ offense made on Sunday.

Much like they did against the Falcons, the Eagles did a good job of dictating what the defense would do with misdirection and play-action. In the play above the Eagles use play-action off a sweep to roll Nick Foles out to his right. The Vikings are in man defense and the play fake gets them going in the wrong direction. Nelson Agholor (13), playing the slot for the Eagles, runs a drag with the slot corner playing off in trail coverage. Foles puts the ball over the head of Harrison Smith (22) — who’s on the end of the line of scrimmage — picking up an easy completion that gets Foles in a rhythm early.

I loved Eagles head coach Doug Pederson’s willingness to attack downfield early and test Vikings cornerback Trae Waynes. Early in the game, Pederson dialed up a shot play to Torrey Smith that should have been a completion. I thought the play design above was neat in the way that it gave Foles options. On the left side of the formation, the Eagles ran a fake wide receiver screen, along with a sprinkled in switch concept in which the slot receiver runs a wheel route. Foles fakes the screen to the left and draws the defense up to that side of the field. The Vikings communicate well and switch off on the wheel route, which could have led to a wide open receiver had they not. The pump fake also serves to freeze the single high safety Andrew Sendejo (34) while Torrey Smith works the vertical route on the right side of the field. With Smith’s speed, Sendejo has no shot of recovering to get over the top to help Waynes. This leaves the middle of the field open, which is where Foles should have thrown it to make the play easier for Smith. The ball instead stays too far outside the hash marks forcing Smith to make a more contested catch that he can’t haul in, although he still should’ve. If the ball is thrown a little further towards the middle of the field, Smith likely has the opportunity to make an uncontested play.

As well as Foles ultimately played on Sunday, an offense works in unison. Last week I discussed the intricacies of a gameplan and what it truly means to call a great game. This past week the Eagles brought that same preparation with great execution, and it set the entire offense up for success. Coming in, the scouting report likely mentioned Everson Griffen’s (97) aggressiveness when it comes to getting up the field. In the play above the Eagles block to the right, which fools the linebackers and gets them flowing in that direction. They leave Griffen unblocked at the end of the line and he crashes down too far. If Griffen stays square, he likely drops Jay Ajayi in the backfield for a loss, but the Eagles played to his aggressiveness and Ajayi is able to get wide of him. Give credit to the Eagles’ wide receivers who did an excellent job of holding their blocks to allow Ajayi to get up to the second level and pick up a first down.

There wasn’t anything special about the design of the play above, but what caught my eye was how well it was executed. On the the right side Mack Hollins (10) is the lone receiver, with tight end Zach Ertz (86) close to the formation. Ertz just releases to the flat on third-and-short, but the impressive part of the play was what Hollins did. He ran a hook route that’s only purpose was to create a pick. Hollins immediately located Harrison Smith and camped right in front of him, which created enough separation for Ertz to get the first down. I just thought that was an incredibly savvy play from the rookie wide receiver and — as somebody on Twitter pointed out — serves as a testament to the job that wide receiver coach Mike Groh has done with this unit.

For the second straight week, Eagles tight end Trey Burton (88) had a crucial block on a touchdown run. In the play above, the Eagles run a “wham” concept where they leave Vikings defensive tackle Tom Johnson (92) unblocked and bring Burton across the formation to block him. Burton does a good job of sealing the block and Mack Hollins blocks down on Vikings cornerback Terence Newman (23) to spring running back LeGarrette Blount free. Once Blount gets to the third level, he only has to win one-on-one against Sendejo, which he easily does.

There wasn’t anything special about the two plays above that caught my eye, except the fantastic offensive line play, but they seem to be apart of a new trend that we’re seeing with Nick Foles. The joke has been made often about Nick Foles back-pedaling his way into disaster. In his last two games, I’ve noticed less of that. He’s stepping up in the pocket and not letting pressure rattle him, which in turn is allowing him to make precise, accurate throws. Quarterbacks tend to revert to bad habits when the bullets are flying or they come under pressure, but Foles stood in the pocket all night long, executing how you’d want him to. I’d like to believe this is attributed to John DeFilippo and the rest of the Eagles’ offensive staff. I’m sure they’ve spent most of the season and the bye week working with Foles on these nuances. One other thing that I believe has helped Foles is that the coaching staff has called plays to get him in a rhythm early, boosting his confidence. If all of this is true, its says a lot about how good this coaching staff truly is.

The play above is a continuation of what I just mentioned with Foles’ ability to hang tough in the pocket with pressure arriving. To the left side of the formation, the Eagles are running their flood concept, with Alshon Jeffery running a deep dig route to the right side. After Jeffery breaks on his route, Terence Newman cuts inside and Jeffery leverages that to his advantage. Seeing Foles in trouble, Jeffery takes his route up the field to give Foles somebody to throw the ball to. A few plays prior to this, when Foles was in trouble he chucked the ball deep to avoid a sack. That play was likely still fresh in Jeffery’s head as he turned upfield with nobody deep. Foles was able to extend the play and keep his eyes downfield, letting it rip and hitting Jeffery in stride for a touchdown.

The Eagles gameplan against the Vikings was well-executed and I can’t say that enough. With less than 40 seconds in the half and facing a cover 1 defense, the Eagles run a receiver deep while Zach Ertz runs what initially appears to be an out route. Harrison Smith plays it as such, because with less than a minute left, situational football assumes the Eagles want to get out of bounds to stop the clock. Ertz ends up running and out-and-up which is exactly what it sounds like. With Smith in a trail position and the deep safety and corner occupied with the vertical route, there’s nothing to stop Ertz from ripping off a long gain that puts the Eagles in field goal position.

Despite the early drop, I thought Torrey Smith had a really good game. On the first play he easily beats Trae Waynes inside and gets behind him almost instantly. The deep safety was drawn to the opposite side of the field, which gave Smith all the room he needed had Foles been able stay clean in the pocket and deliver the ball downfield. If the blitzing linebacker was held in check for just a second longer, Torrey Smith likely has a touchdown if he catches the ball.

On the second play, the Eagles run a flea flicker, but safety Harrison Smith does a good job of diagnosing it. Flea flickers tend to be easier for disciplined players and defenses to diagnose because the offensive line sets up in pass protection, which is one of the defense’s keys. Torrey Smith does an excellent job selling the play as a run when he hesitates halfway through his route and picks it back up to beat Waynes again. Smith almost gets over in time to make a play, but Nick Foles throws a perfect pass and hits the honey hole between the safety and cornerback, giving the Eagles a 31-7 lead to start the third quarter.

The play above is a variation of what the Eagles have done in the redzone all year long. They motioned Alshon Jeffery across the formation which helps them diagnose the coverage early. After the ball is snapped, Zach Ertz runs a hook route to the goalline, while Alshon Jeffery runs deeper route in behind Ertz. This design is geared towards forcing a defense to defend one player at the cost of leaving another open. If the defender swarm to Ertz, Foles can hit Jeffery behind them for a touchdown. Seeing as how Ertz has become a dangerous redzone weapon, teams typically focus on removing him from a play.

The Eagles ran this same route concept with Ertz and Jeffery in their Week 4 win over the Chargers and Jeffery scored on it then. If it’s not broke don’t fix it.

This game highlighted why execution is so key. The coaching staff can put together the best gameplan in the world, but at the end of the day, it’s up to the players to execute those concepts for them to be successful. The Eagles did so on Sunday, and they couldn’t have done so any better. Every unit on offense was clicking in unison as the Eagles dismantled what was considered to be the best defense in football. After watching this game, this may have been the most well executed performance the Eagles had all year, even with Carson Wentz. That’s not to say Foles is better than Wentz, as he’s not and it’s not close, but his play was nearly perfect. The downside to that is that it’s not likely Foles plays like that again. Weaving through Eagles postseason history, I’d be hard pressed to find another quarterback performance that’s quite as good as this one. I don’t believe Foles will play like this in the Super Bowl, but I believe there’s a happy medium between this performance and the Falcons one that he can play at and still give the Eagles a legitimate chance to win. However, if by some chance Foles and the rest of the offense can execute like they did against Minnesota, they can’t lose.

Big takeaways from a huge Eagles win.

The Philadelphia Eagles clobbered the Minnesota Vikings in the 2018 NFC Championship Game by a final score of 38 to 7. Here’s a look at some things we learned from this big win.

[Editor’s note: Apologies for the delay on this post. I’ve been extremely stressed and busy with Super Bowl prep.]

1 - The Eagles are going to the Super Bowl!

It’s still so hard to believe it’s really happening. It just wasn’t expected going into this season. And then again when Carson Wentz went down for the year. But it’s really happening.

For the first time since the 2004 season — 13 years ago — the Eagles are going to the big game. It’s only the third time in franchise history they’ve made it to this point: 1980, 2004, 2017.

The Eagles have a chance to win their first title since they won an NFL Championship in 1960 ... which is almost 60 years ago now.

They’re so close, you guys.

2 - Fans were incredibly awesome at the Linc

I wrote last week that I’d never seen Lincoln Financial Field as energized as it was for the Eagles-Falcons game. The crowd for the NFC Championship Game easily topped that one.

With an hour remaining until kickoff, there were LOUD cheers for Eagles players running on to the field for warmups and LOUD boos for Vikings players. The stadium wasn’t even close to being full yet at that point.

The fans were fantastic during the game as well. Fans seated right in front of the press box started a “SKOL” chant to mock the Vikings. Then that evolved into a “FOLES” chant with the same clapping motion.

Near the end of the game, some Eagles fans were chanting “WE WANT BRADY!” — which is a very daunting request. But this crowd had no fear.

The Eagles have the best fans in the NFL, and I have proof.

3 - Doug Pederson is incredible

DOUGIE P!

Prior to the NFCCG, I wrote that Doug Pederson was the number one reason why Philly fans should feet confident in the Eagles beating the Vikings.

Faith in Pederson was rewarded on Sunday night. The Eagles’ head coach called another masterful game.

Pederson stayed balanced: they had 33 pass attempts to 30 run plays.

Pederson stayed aggressive: he easily could went have conservative before the end of the first half. Instead of running the clock, however, he put his foot on the gas and got the Eagles into field goal range. The Eagles took a three-possession lead while knowing they’d get the ball to start the third quarter. Compare Pederson’s actions to those of Doug Marrone, who passed on an opportunity to do something similar against the Patriots. And then the Jaguars ended up losing to New England. Pederson plays to win, not just “not to lose.”

Pederson stayed creative: you have to love him pulling out the flea flicker (phrasing). Doug did a great job of getting Foles into a rhythm and making him feel comfortable.

Overall, just a great job by Pederson. Can’t say enough things about the guy. It’s never not going to be a joke he didn’t end up as Coach of the Year. Sean McVay did some impressive things, no doubts, but Pederson did more with less. And he kicked Mike Zimmer’s ass as well.

4 - Nick Foles is having success thanks to me

Nick Foles was unbelievably brilliant against the Vikings, the NFL’s No. 1 defense. He went 26/33 (78.8%) for three touchdowns, zero touchdowns, and a 141.4 passer rating.

So, you’re probably thinking it’s time for me to apologize for not believing in Foles. Well, I’m not going to apologize. Instead, I’m going to say “You’re welcome” since I personally motivated Foles to playing this well. He couldn’t have performed this well without me doubting him all along.

Ha, just kidding. I was wrong for doubting him to the extent that I did! Foles was great.

With that said, you can’t convince me that even the most fervent Foles believers expected him to do what he did on Sunday night. The guy was lights out. Dropping dimes all over the field. Showing mobility in the pocket to keep plays alive. I mean, are we sure that wasn’t Carson Wentz wearing a Foles uniform?

We all knew Foles was a high variance player, but that was the best game of his career. The highest of highs.

Now, going back to the variance thing, you still wonder if Bad Foles could show up in the Super Bowl. Hopefully that won’t be the case. That was encouraging performance.

5 - The Eagles continue to kick ass in the trenches

The games are won in lost and the trenches.

What doesn’t show up in those numbers is that the pressure the Eagles generated led to multiple turnovers. Chris Long affected Case Keenum’s throw that got picked off by Patrick Robinson. Derek Barnett strip-sacked Keenum. Those are game-changing plays right there.

When it comes to the offensive line, they got good push up front in the run game. Eagles running backs combined for 114 yards on 26 carries. That’s a solid 4.4 yards per carry on a Vikings defense that was surrendering the second fewest rush yards in the NFL.

6 - Howie Roseman’s impact on the team was apparent

Great observation here:

You can also add “kicked a field goal/extra point” to this list thanks to Jake Elliott.

Howie Roseman’s Executive of the Year award is well desreved. He did a great job of building an immediate contender while not completely sacrificing the team’s long-term outlook.

7 - Alshon Jeffery is earning that money

Jeffery’s big night kind of got lost in all the craziness to come out of this game. He caught all five of his targets for 85 yards and two touchdowns. His second touchdown, a red zone score, showed why the Eagles paid him all that money. Jeffery made a jump ball catch and was able to hold on as he went to the ground. Great strength. No. 1 WR type catch.

In two playoff games, Jeffery now has nine receptions for 146 yards and two scores. Pretty good. The Eagles are getting their money’s worth out of him.

8 - Patrick Robinson is the unsung hero of this season

That pick six really swung the entire game.

The Eagles were down 7-0. The crowd’s thunder was tempered a little by that first Vikings touchdown drive. Then P-Rob’s interception happened and things changed. The pick came easy due to a pressured throw, but the return was all him. He read the field correctly and was able to cut back for the score. Big props to Ronald Darby for making that “block” on Jerick McKinnon to seal the deal. It sure wasn’t pretty -- Darby got BLOWN UP -- but he did enough to prevent the Vikings from tackling Robinson. From there, the Eagles never looked back.

What a year it’s been for Robinson. Four interceptions in the regular season and now a fifth in a big, big moment. He’s been such a sneakily important player to the Eagles’ success this year. And this was a guy who was signed for the vet minimum and looked like he was going to get cut in training camp. Amazing.

9 - The Sam Bradford trade helped to cost the game for Minnesota

Just a reminder that the 2017 first-round pick the Eagles got from the Vikings for Sam Bradford turned out to be Derek Barnett. You know, the guy who had the strip-sack on Keenum.

Oh, and the Vikings haven’t completely paid up for that trade yet. The Eagles still have a 2018 fourth-round pick from Minnesota to use.

10 - Hard not to feel good going into the rematch

With the way the Eagles played on Sunday night, it’s hard not to feel good going into the Super Bowl.

Beating the Vikings the way they did doesn’t guarantee the Eagles will beat the Patriots, no, but you have to feel like they’ll at least give New England a good battle.

But forget about moral victories. It’s time to bring the Lombardi to Philly.

The Vikings aren’t even close to being considered as a “rival” in Philly. If anything, they might deserve sympathy for being such a tortured fan base, which is something Eagles fans can relate to.

But now I’m rethinking that sympathy part after the way I’ve seen some Vikings fans react to Philadelphia’s 38-7 win over their team.
The starting offensive line played the entire game yet again and did a great job.

Nick Foles came out for the final three kneeldowns of the game. Nice move by Doug Pederson to replace him with Nate Sudfeld so that Foles could get some applause for a great performance.

Alshon Jeffery and Zach Ertz were the main options in the passing attack. Ertz caught all eight of his targets for 93 yards. Jeffery caught all five of his targets for 85 yards and two touchdowns. Really big games from those two. Torrey Smith dropped a pass early on but he redeemed himself later with a 41-yard touchdown on the flea flicker play. Nelson Agholor also contributed with three receptions for 59 yards.

Jay Ajayi was the Eagles’ main running back once again. He finished with 99 total yards from scrimmage; 18 carries for 73 yards (4.1 average) and three receptions for 26 yards.

Corey Clement finished with more snaps played than LeGarrette Blount. That’s a little interesting. Last week, Blount played 30% of the snaps while Clement was at 24%. This week, Clement was at 32% while Blount was at 17%. This is a good change, in my view. Prior to this game, Blount was only averaging 2.8 yards per carry in his last six games and it’s not like he contributes as a receiver. I don’t dislike Blount; he’s been good for the Eagles this year and his touchdown run against the Vikings where he barrelled over Andrew Sendejo was fantastic. But it’s probably for the best if Blount is limited to just short-yardage and red zone situations at this point. Let Ajayi and Clement take the majority of the snaps. Blount had six carries for 21 yards on Sunday night compared to Clement’s two carries for 20. Clement also had a nice 8-yard reception where he made a defender miss on 3rd-and-6 to move the chains.

The Eagles went heavy on the offensive line a few times by bringing in Isaac Seumalo as an extra blocker.

DEFENSE

Along with Nigel Bradham, Philly’s starting secondary played the entire game, save for one missed snap by Ronald Darby.

The Eagles played a lot of nickel and dime defense in this game, which is evidenced by Patrick Robinson’s playing time. P-Rob’s pick six really turned the game around for the Eagles after that first touchdown drive by the Vikings. Veteran safety Corey Graham also got a good chunk of playing time.

Jim Schwartz continues to (correctly) rely heavily upon Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham instead of utilizing the regular season d-line rotation. The good news is Cox and Graham played 11% fewer snaps than last week since the Eagles were up big late in the game.

The Eagles dropped Curry’s snaps by 21% from last week and gave them to Derek Barnett instead. Barnett responded with a strip sack on Case Keenum.

Tim Jernigan and Beau Allen are curiously playing a similar amount of snaps despite the fact Jernigan received a big contract extension during the season. Jernigan’s been dealing with a nagging foot injury this year so maybe that explains things? Stats don’t always tell the entire story, but in the last two games combined, Jernigan only has one tackle.

Najee Goode got the “start” at middle linebacker in Philadelphia’s base defense due to Dannell Ellerbe being inactive with a hamstring issue. Goode got beat by Kyle Rudolph early in the game when the defense was having communication issues. The Eagles didn’t play him much more from there.

After being a healthy scratch against the Falcons, Destiny Vaeao got some snaps in the defensive tackle rotation this week.
