An insider's perspective on the new Eagles receiver.

The Eagles shocked everyone last week by pulling off a trade with the Tennessee Titans to acquire former second round pick Dorial Green-Beckham. Poll results show that Eagles fans overwhelmingly approve of the deal while Titans fans are almost evenly split on the trade. For more reaction and inside perspective on DGB, I reached out to our friend Jimmy Morris from Music City Miracles.

1) What was your initial reaction to the DGB trade? Is this a good deal for the Titans? Why or why not?

"I was shocked. You don't see teams give up on someone with his ceiling before year 2 very often.

However, I do think it was a good deal for the Titans because they are trying to change the culture, and he was a guy that hadn't made the commitment to being the best football player he could be. On potential value the trade isn't good for the Titans, but I love the message it sends."

2) What are DGB’s strengths?

"He's 6-5, 240 and is really fast. He has the raw ability to be a top 5 receiver in this league. He has the speed to make big plays down the field and the size to be a deadly threat in the red zone. Seriously, his ceiling is really, really high."

3) What are his weaknesses?

"He couldn't figure out the offense for one. There were numerous times last season where he went one way and Mariota threw the ball another way. One of those guys is said to be a student of the game, one isn't. You can make your own determination on who was at fault.

DGB also didn't put in the time to learn the nuances of the wide receiver position. Again, that was an issue for the new regime."

4) Why was DGB available at such a low cost? Why/how did he fall out of favor in Tennessee?

"For the reasons mentioned above. Former GM Ruston Webster valued talent above all else. This group wants performance and commitment."

5) Based on what you saw last season, how do you project DGB’s future? Can he be a good starting receiver in the NFL?

"He absolutely can be if he decides he wants to be. I was thrilled when they drafted him last year. You don't see a guy with his measureables available in the 2nd round very often. For the Eagles' sake, hopefully this will be a wake up call for him."

6) Eagles fans were very surprised Dennis Kelly had any trade value. Why did the Titans want him?

"The Titans needed a guy that could step in and play tackle if one of their starters gets hurt. Their swing tackle, Byron Bell, was lost for the season in OTAs. They didn't have another guy on the roster that could hold up in that scenario. Now they do."

Eagles fans found something they can agree on.

Do Philadelphia Eagles fans approve of the Dorial Green-Beckham trade? That's the question we posed in our poll from yesterday and the results are in. To no surprise, Eagles fans believe the team made a good deal by shipping out Dennis Kelly in order to bring in a new wide receiver.

It's surprising to see the vote so close to 50-50. The Titans spent the No. 40 overall pick on DGB just one year ago and now he's gone in exchange for a replacement level backup offensive lineman. Getting pennies on the dollar may have been better than getting nothing for DGB if the Titans were going to cut him anyway, but Tennessee hardly got great value for him.

And that brings us back to why this deal is seen so favorably for the Eagles. Even if DGB is a total bust, it's not likely the Birds will be kicking themselves for getting rid of Kelly. For Philadelphia, it was an easy risk to take.

Kelly has had more time on the field to prove himself, for better or worse, and what he has shown has not been good. Last season in just 402 snaps, he allowed five sacks, one hit, and 21 hurries bouncing between guard and tackle, and even though the Eagles are low on O-line depth, they’re pretty desperate for receiver help, as well. Green-Beckham may not have shown much last season to suggest that he can be the guy to lift this corps, but he is only a year removed from being a highly-touted prospect. He has size and the ability to run past people, and all of the physical attributes that you can’t teach. Even last season in what was seen as a disappointing rookie campaign, he caught four touchdowns for 549 yards and averaged 17.2 yards per reception, forcing five missed tackles on 32 catches.

"We saw the great athleticism that he has," Frank Reich said. "You could see it wasn’t too big for him. A lot of good moves from Carson." But after suffering a hairline fracture in his ribs, that athleticism will have to be put on hold for a few weeks. He will miss valuable reps during practice, and he’ll potentially miss the rest of the preseason games. But that doesn’t mean his development will come to a halt. According to Reich, Wentz will continue to grow because of the mental reps the rookie quarterback will get.

But there is the potential for greater downside because of what the deal suggests about the state of the Eagles receivers, in particular one former first-round pick. Howie Roseman said the team had been in the market for receivers for weeks, but it was no coincidence that Tuesday's swap came on the heels of Thursday's preseason opener. The receivers, without the injured Jordan Matthews, were ineffective, to put it kindly. There were at least four drops, and 11 receivers caught only 10 of 21 targets for 52 yards.

And while a late-round offensive lineman like Kelly may not move the meter very much among Eagles fans -- not like a potential big-play wide receiver like Green-Beckham -- Jason Kelce said Kelly is a significant loss to the Eagles’ offensive line. "I really think Dennis was very underrated," Kelce said Tuesday. "He’s a big, strong, tough guy, and every time he played, he did a very good job for us, at a variety of positions. "He’s a very smart player, and I think his athleticism was definitely underrated."

From 2010 to 2014 when Roseman had the title of general manager the Eagles made 35 trades. And 10 were player for player trades which, outside of the NovaCare Complex, are extremely rare in the NFL. Roseman, who traded the Eagles from No. 13 to No. 2 in the NFL Draft back in April, did it again when he sent Kelly to the land of the Grand Ole Opry for Green-Beckham.
Yes or no?

Now that there's been plenty of time to digest the Philadelphia Eagles' surprising trade for Dorial Green-Beckham, it's time to put it to a vote: do you approve of the deal?

There's ample reason to think this could be a good trade for the Birds. First off, the Eagles simply didn't give up much in their swap with the Tennessee Titans. At best, Dennis Kelly was arguably a serviceable, versatile backup for Philadelphia. Through his 15 career starts, however, he never really show full-time starting potential. Even if DGB turns out to be a total flop for the Eagles, the team barely gave up much to get him.

DGB was worth taking a risk on because he's flashed legitimate talent. The former No. 1 overall high school recruit in the nation was a second round pick last year. He's 6-5, 237 pounds and runs a 4.49 40-yard dash. As Bleeding Green Nation's Patrick Wall pointed out earlier, DGB's 549 yards would have been third on the Eagles last year, and his four touchdowns would have been second. Philadelphia desperately needed help at receiver. Their current pass catching corps combined for 52 yards on 10 catches in the first preseason game, which is pathetic.

There are some reasons why people might not approve of this deal. DGB's character concerns are an issue. One can also argue giving away Kelly isn't ideal when the Eagles are already light on offensive line depth and current starting right tackle Lane Johnson is facing a 10-game suspension. Even if you think Kelly isn't that great, he at least knows the system and has chemistry with his fellow lineman.

Overall, I think it's hard not to approve of this deal. As Howie Roseman said, the Eagles are in a spot where they have to gamble on talent due to limited draft resources as a result of the Carson Wentz trade. Something had to be done at receiver, and this trade looks a low-risk, high-reward move.

He's got some talent.

Doug Pederson used four words to describe newly acquired Eagles wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham: "Big, tall, physical, and strong." Howie Roseman added that the 23-year-old pass catcher is "incredibly talented." Green-Beckham's pedigree would suggest these statements from the Eagles are true. He was the No. 1 overall high school football recruit in 2012. He was also the 40th overall player selected in the 2015 NFL Draft.

But don't just take their word for it. Watch college and NFL highlights of the newest Eagles receiver below and you can see watch the coaching staff is talking about.

Green-Beckham's jump ball ability is real impressive. The Eagles haven't really had a receiver who's been able to do things like that in quite some time. He should be able to help the Birds in the red zone.

Strengths - Imposing physical specimen with outstanding height, weight and speed numbers. Smooth, effortless strides to chomp up cushion and blow by overconfident corners. Runs routes with forward lean and can activate second gear when he chooses. Rare catch radius with ability to pluck would-be interceptions and turn them into catches. Has soft, sure hands. Can see a throw late and still haul it in. Able to drive cornerbacks down the field and then break route off for wide-open look underneath. Shows flashes of special ability when ball is in the air. Plus body control. Can twist and contort in any direction in order to get his hands on a throw.

Weaknesses - Play strength is a major concern. Struggles to free himself from press coverage and can be taken completely out of his routes. Runs sloppy, rounded routes. Fails to set up his breaks and frequently leads cornerbacks to his destination. Slow to adjust routes and find open space against zone. Fails to create the separation that is potentially available for him at top of routes. Rarely looks to body up cornerbacks and keep them out of the throw. Suspect work ethic. Awareness of footwork near sideline an issue. Considered a problem child at Missouri. Suspended twice by Missouri and arrested twice for marijuana-related incidents. Kicked off team at Missouri in April 2014 after details of his alleged role in an alleged burglary were released by Columbia, Mo., police. He allegedly shoved a female student down some stairs during the alleged incident, but no charges were filed. Missed entire 2014 season.

Bottom Line - Long-strider with vertical ability to change a game and the catch radius and body control to make the difficult look easy. However, Green-Beckham struggles against physical cornerbacks, and is raw as a route runner with poor instincts when it comes to getting open. It's easy to bet on the traits when a receiver has high football character and is a willing worker, but teams could pass on the traits early in the draft due to his perceived lack of work ethic and overall character.

Long ago, Dorial Green Beckham was a promising young star at the university of Missouri. Coming out of high school, Green Beckham was regarded as the best player in the country, in part due to his abnormal size and speed for such a young player. The 6-6 wide receiver signed with Mizzou, but his stardom was not immediately realized like many anticipated. Green Beckham had a relatively quiet freshman season despite massive expectations, with some calling him the most promising receiver recruit in a decade. Beckham improved upon his freshman with a productive second season with the Tigers, wracking up over 800 yards receiving , flashing the ability to use his size and straight line speed to dominate college corners. There was a lot of hope for his NFL prospects following his sophomore season, but those hopes would come to abrupt stop.

Following his sophomore season, Dorial Green Beckham was excused from Mizzou after he was involved in a domestic violence incident. Allegedly, Green Beckham broke into his former girlfriend’s apartment and assaulted one of her roommates, pushing her down the stairs while he was angrily looking for his girlfriend of the time. After the incident, the police stated that the residents of the room refused to cooperate or press charges "out of fear of retaliation." He had terrified the women involved to the point of legal silence…

Beckham transferred to the University of Oklahoma where he was forced to sit for a year due to NCAA rules. Instead of staying for his senior year to play with the Sooners and possibly rehabilitate his image, Beckham instead opted to enter the NFL draft after only two years of college playing time and a year off from seeing live football action.

The hype train immediately started up again.

The massive, 6-6, 240 pound receiver ran a 4.52 forty yard dash at the combine, prompting people to make outlandish claims about his NFL potential. Of course, they were unfounded. Despite an impressive 40 yard dash for his size, Beckham’s numbers were incredibly underwhelming. This could speak to the fact that Beckham was not a great athlete overall, rather just a big guy with straight-line speed, or that he did not care to prepare enough for the combine. Considering the history, both are equally possible and equally worrying. Flip on the tape for Green Beckham, and more worries begin to arise. It is obvious that a receiver of his size can be an asset. He has moments of astonishing play where he uses his frame to body defenders and make plays on the ball. However, there is a worrying amount of inconsistency and lack of polish to his game while he is in college. He is not a great route runner, he is not quick or sudden, which is not surprising given his size, and more often than not, Green Beckham came across as being passive while the ball was in the air. People were throwing around comparisons to Calvin Johnson, which is irresponsible for basically any receiver prospect, but it seemed especially inappropriate for a player who was not close to the athlete that Johnson was at Georgia Tech and frankly, did not seem to care on the field a worrying amount of the time.

It was obvious that Green Beckham was talented, but the amount of red flags he carried with him just made him totally untouchable.

Alas, size, speed and recruiting pedigree will go a long way in the NFL draft process and we already know they do not actually care about how NFL players treat women. Beckham was drafted in the second round by the Tennessee Titans with the expectations that he would grow with their first round quarterback, Marcus Mariota. The Titans were in search of a true number one receiver and the belief was that Beckham had the tools to become "the guy" in the offense for their young franchise quarterback.

Like most of his career, Dorial Green Beckham’s rookie season did not match the hype. He had some highlight plays and some touchdown catches, but he failed to grow into the immediate weapon the Titans wanted when they drafted him. He was inconsistent in every aspect of the game; creating separation, winning at the catch point or just simply catching the football. Of course he is a rookie who has been away from football for a long time, but the Titans were obviously not satisfied following his debut season in the NFL. Tennessee signed Rishard Mathews away from the Miami Dolphins in free agency and drafted Tajee Sharp, a receiver out of UMass to get more weapons for Mariota. Sharp had a productive career at UMass, but measured poorly at the combine in terms of size and Mathews was basically a one year wonder who was injured. However, both of them were getting first team reps over Beckham in camp and with Kendall Wright, the Titan’s 2012 first round pick, still in Tennessee, there was no room for Green Beckham in the starting line up. The former five star recruit and second round pick could not assert himself in camp over a day three rookie or a guy coming off a season ending injury.

He was expendable to the Titans.

Of course, the Eagles are in need of weapons and saw it as a low risk, high reward trade to move Dennis Kelly, a back up offensive linemen, for Green Beckham. With no Eagles receiver asserting himself in camp or in preseason, and Jordan Matthews sidelined with a knee injury (which he sustained from a dirty hit in camp by a different "choir boy" the Eagles drafted), the Eagles saw it as imperative to take a chance on Green Beckham. The truth is, the song remains the same with Beckham. He is a talented receiver with major focus and route running issues on the field, like every other receiver the Eagles had. Philadelphia’s young group of receivers was a wild card going into the season and nothing changes with this trade. From a football perspective, it is a redundant move where the team is banking on potential that Green Beckham has not met since he was 17 years old.

This is poor football sense, it is worse people sense and it is not the first time the Eagles are going down this path this offseason. They drafted Jalen Mills, who has been popular in camp, despite his involvement in a domestic dispute while he was in college. They have prioritized performance over people, but not even performance, perceived upside as performance. There is nothing to suggest DGB has improved as a person or a player, but the Eagles are investing in the ceiling he has failed to hit year after year. I want to make it clear that second chances are a thing I believe in and something everyone should believe in, but Green Beckham is beyond second chances. He was given chance after chance by Mizzou, the University of Oklahoma, and the Tennessee Titans and has failed each and every test given to him. When the Eagles signed Michael Vick after he was released from prison all those years ago, there was a genuine desire in Michael Vick to make good on his wrongs and he worked his ass off on and off the field to show how deeply apologetic he was and that he was a better man. We have yet to see that from Dorial Green Beckham.

Personally, I find it so hard to root for this year's football team. I will cover them, because I love football and I love Philadelphia, but the 2016 Philadelphia Eagles will have me reluctant to cheer for them on Sundays. Over a year ago, this fan base collectively bashed the Cowboys and Washington football team for bringing in Greg Hardy and Junior Galette, two documented domestic abusers. Frankly, I took a lot of pride in the fact that the football team I rooted for and patronized would have never considered two people like that. Now, with new leadership, the Eagles have thrown that standard out the window and as a fan, while these players are here, I will take no part in it. If the same people who bashed Dallas or Washington for their irresponsibility in enabling abusers are now lauding Philadelphia for their "savvy, low risk" moves, just know that you are part of the problem. I am by no means telling you that you should boycott the team, because I understand the want to escape from a world riddled with political mess every Sunday for a few hours to cheer your heart out for the team you love. However, I am asking you to remain critical and vocal. Domestic violence and the erasure of female voices in the United States is an age old epidemic and it does not get better by teams like Dallas, Washington, Philadelphia, Seattle or any other professional sports team excusing violence for the sake of the product on game day.

This offseason was one of renewal for Philadelphia: A new coach, new franchise quarterback and a new direction. However, if Dorial Green Beckham represents the direction this team wants to go in, it is not a direction that I will embrace, nor should you. It is a direction of desperation, and there are no winners in desperation.

The Eagles made a surprise trade on Tuesday morning by acquiring Dorial Green-Beckham. Philadelphia's primary player personnel decision maker, executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman, addressed the roster move shortly after practice on Tuesday.

"We felt like it was an opportunity to increase the competition level at the wide receiver position," said Roseman. "We’ve gotten a chance to see some of young offensive lineman as well and want to give them a chance here to grow and develop. We felt like the timing was right now when we have some time to work with [Green-Beckham], as opposed to doing something at the final cuts."

The Eagles' desperate need for more talent at receiver was apparent, and there's no denying the 6-5, 237 pound Green-Beckham has skill.

"Big, tall, strong, physical receiver," said Eagles head coach Doug Pederson of the team's newest pass catcher. "Can make plays. There’s not a ton of current game film on him so we had to dive back into his history to watch some games. I really liked him, really intrigued with him. Obviously, his size and speed. Looking forward to getting him in here and getting him going."

At first glance, the trade appears to be a big win for the Eagles. Philadelphia only needed to trade away Dennis Kelly, a career backup offensive lineman, in exchange for a potential talented starter at receiver. But the questions about Green-Beckham's character and work ethic create room for skepticism.

"We’ve spent a lot of time here in the last few weeks behind the scenes doing some background work," Roseman said. "He comes in with an opportunity. No promises have been made. We felt comfortable at this time to bring him in here and give him an opportunity to compete."

Another concern with Green-Beckham is how quickly he fell out of favor in Tennessee. Just one year after being a second round pick by the Titans, the organization was ready to move on.

"That’s obviously a better question for [the Titans], but our eyes are open," said Roseman. "We understand. It’s been very public about coaches comments about him and that he needs to get more consistent. We’re going into it with our eyes open about that. Obviously a high pick, 40th overall, incredibly talented guy. He’s got to make the most of this opportunity."

It's worth noting the Eagles were not able to contact Green-Beckham prior to the trade. This isn't a situation similar to the lead up to the NFL Draft, where teams can interview players with character concerns. Instead, Roseman said the Eagles relied on feedback from Green-Beckham's college contacts, such as ones at Missouri.

"Obviously he’s made some mistakes, but he’s a good-hearted kid," Roseman said."[We heard] that he has the right intentions. And if that if you get a chance to really spend some time with him, you’ll see that. He’s not a locker room cancer at all. That his year off from football, he was doing whatever he could to help the football team even while he wasn’t playing. All positive feedback."

It remains to be seen if the good things the Eagles had to hear about Green-Beckham show up during his stint in Philadelphia. The second-year receiver has a lot to prove both on and off the field.
