But he is staying in the NFC East.

Olamide Zaccheaus is not returning to the Philadelphia Eagles after signing a one-year contract last year.

The St. Joe’s Prep alumnus is instead headed south to sign with the Washington Commanders. It’s there OZ is reunited with former Eagles offensive coordinator and current Commanders assistant head coach/offensive pass game coordinator Brian Johnson.

Zaccheaus is also back together with Marcus Mariota, who he played with in Atlanta before coming to Philly. OZ overlapped with new Commanders head coach Dan Quinn on the Falcons from 2019-2020.

The Eagles seemingly signed OZ to compete with Quez Watkins for the third wide receiver role last year. OZ began the season as WR4, though, and never really climbed higher on the depth chart despite making the most of his limited opportunities. Whereas bad things happened whenever the Eagles targeted Quez, good things typically happened when OZ’s number was called.

Zaccheaus caught 10 of his 20 targets for 164 yards (16.4 average), two touchdowns, and zero drops. His two scores came in high-leverage situations:

The latter of his two catches, depicted in the header photo for this article, was especially impressive.

In addition to these flashes, OZ was a player who did the dirty work. He contributed on special teams, logging 112 snaps there (25% of the team’s total). He caught a fake punt throw from Braden Mann late in the season against the Cowboys. OZ also did a good job of downfield blocking on some catch-and-run touchdown scores by DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown. It’s a bit befuddling how he didn’t earn more offensive playing time in Philly.

Regardless, OZ is moving on. And it didn’t seem likely that the Eagles would re-sign him after bringing in both DeVante Parker and Parris Campbell. The team could look to add a rookie in the 2024 NFL Draft to compete with those veterans for the WR3 and WR4 roles.

I promise I won’t get too excited but... I was a fan of Campbell coming out of college. This is what I said about him, back in 2019. “Everything he does is fast. He can’t get off press so needs to be a Z or slot receiver. His routes need a lot of refinement and he’s raw as a route runner. However, he has electric speed and he can just run past off coverage. He has great speed to get YAC on drag, curls etc. Should be an explosive player but the question is - is he a legitimate Z or just an explosive package player?” Well, I guess he turned out to be more of an explosive package player.

That’s by design. “I know you guys want all the answers now,” Sirianni said when asked about the terminology of the offense at the NFL’s annual league meetings on Tuesday. “That’s your job. I respect that. But it doesn’t serve us well to put those answers out there until (the season opener in) Brazil. I’m just telling you right now, I’m not going to give you a lot on that. I’m going to be vague on this because for anyone to know what we’re running or how we’re calling it, it doesn’t serve us well. So we’ll keep some things close to the vest.” There are obviously plenty of questions about what the Eagles’ offense will look like in 2024 after the team replaced former offensive coordinator Brian Johnson with veteran OC Kellen Moore this offseason.

There was a lot of hype around Philadelphia’s first-round selections, former Georgia teammates Jalen Carter (No. 9) and Nolan Smith (No. 30). Last season’s defensive meltdown does not fall on the shoulders of the rookie class, but Carter’s production didn’t paper over an aging roster around him, and Smith didn’t show enough in limited action to keep the Eagles from acquiring Bryce Huff this offseason. Tyler Steen (No. 65) and Sydney Brown (No. 66) will be nice to have, but the franchise needs more young difference makers. [...] Dallas Cowboys: D. Mazi Smith (No. 26), Luke Schoonmaker (No. 58), DeMarvion Overshown (No. 90) and Deuce Vaughn (No. 212) were the biggest names in Dallas’ 2023 class — and we didn’t see much production. With big contract extensions looming for Dallas’ key players, those four need a major surge during the 2024 season.

That combination would seemingly lead Dallas to give Prescott an extension that both keeps the quarterback in town for years to come and reduces his cap hit in the short term, but the two sides haven’t been able to find common ground on a new deal. Stay tuned there. Last year, I said 2023 was Dallas’ best chance of winning a Super Bowl because of those financial circumstances. It will be much harder in 2024 because it has needed to make cutbacks elsewhere around the roster for financial reasons.

Included in this is that Prescott will not feel he needs to try and use his leverage to maximize his earnings. However, we have seen the team squander goodwill repeatedly. Prescott and his representation have one dangerous weapon in their arsenal that has been used by other players in the past: Holding out. Clearly, the Jones family pays little attention to the adage that those who fail to learn from the mistakes of the past are fated to repeat them. Perhaps they are providing assurances to Prescott that he is going to get his bag. This has not been the history of the team. The owners seem very set in their ways, and that keeps leading to acrimonious situations, especially when they start their regrettable habit of negotiating through the media.

McCarthy - Big Blue View
Yes, it’s another story linking quarterback J.J. McCarthy to the New York Giants. This time, we have a report from Pat Leonard of the Daily News that the Giants will hold a private workout with McCarthy, and that they will send a group to Ann Arbor, Mich., on Easter Sunday to do so. GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll did not attend McCarthy’s Pro Day, but the Giants did host McCarthy for a visit in East Rutherford, N.J. ESPN reported earlier in the week that “a lot of people think the Giants’ guy is J.J. McCarthy.” That may be the case, and it might not be the case. Even if he is their guy, the Giants might not be able to get him. It appears they will have to move up from No. 6 to make that happen, and with teams like the Minnesota Vikings, Las Vegas Raiders and Denver Broncos all potentially in the market to try and get ahead of the Giants there is no guarantee the Giants could fashion an acceptable offer to move up.

Not good news.

Philadelphia Eagles vice president of football administration Jake Rosenberg is leaving the team when his contract expires after the 2024 NFL Draft, according to the Inquirer’s Jeff McLane.

Rosenberg, long considered to be a salary cap expert, confirmed as much while indicating he has aspirations of eventually becoming an NFL general manager. With Howie Roseman firmly entrenched in Philly, Rosenberg believes his best path to advancement lies elsewhere.

This news certainly does not seem like a positive development for the Eagles, who’ve been considered one of, if not THE, NFL’s best salary cap management teams.

From his bio on the team’s official website:

Rosenberg works directly with Executive Vice President/General Manager Howie Roseman on the development and implementation of the Eagles’ plan for player signings and acquisitions. He also plays a key role in all aspects of salary cap management, contract negotiations, compliance with the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, and strategic planning.

Considering Rosenberg’s long-standing relationship with Roseman, one would think the Eagles have had considerable time to prepare for this departure. Jeffrey Lurie has previously discussed the importance of stocking the team’s front office pipeline, which has been poached numerous times over the last several years.

So, it’s not like one would expect the Eagles to suddenly be awful at managing the cap. At the same time, Rosenberg was seemingly very good at his job and losing him isn’t ideal. It’ll be interesting to see which team he lands with.

Last year, he completed 62.0% of his passes, for 2,070 yards, and six touchdowns to four interceptions. Throwing 4 interceptions in 12 games is pretty good, but just 6 touchdowns is pretty terrible. Pickett now has 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 2 seasons. This play sort of sums up the issues with Pickett in the NFL. It’s great that he can get off his primary read and get to the backside, but it takes him too long which means he misses an easy throw. He needs to be coached to speed up his processing speed and hopefully, Kellen Moore can help him do that.

There’s no coach that’s not feeling pressure to perform. That’s the way it is in the National Football League.” #JimmySays: Lurie acknowledged that there was a decision to be made on whether he was retained or not, so yes, quite clearly he’s on the hot seat.

Nick & Jeff Talk - Iggles Blitz
Lurie expressed genuine disappointment in how the 2023 season ended. That sounds obvious, but it was important to hear him say it and not just gloss over that trainwreck of a finish. Lurie focused on positives, as anyone would. He talked about the success the Eagles have had with Sirianni and Jalen Hurts and wanting to get back to the level of the 2022 season. He was asked about why he brought Sirianni back. Lurie talked about Nick’s honest evaluation and desire to fix things. I know a lot of people questioned whether Sirianni would make changes, but at his core, I see him as ultra-competitive. That means you do whatever it takes to win. Give up play-calling? Fine. Fire a young coach you like? Fine. Go get me the best guys out there. Lurie talked about how Sirianni was pushing for Kellen Moore from the start of the coaching search. That’s important. You need Sirianni to fully buy into the new coach and to embrace changes to the playbook. It sounds like that is happening. Lurie said the addition of Moore can make the Eagles offense more dynamic and innovative. That would be better than what we saw the final six weeks.

Everything we heard and buzz from 2024 NFL owners meetings - ESPN
General manager Howie Roseman said the depreciated running back market factored into the Eagles’ decision to go against their normal practices to sign Saquon Barkley to a sizable contract. “Has the pendulum swung so far at this position? I mean, the guy touches the ball 300 times a year, hopefully, there’s not a lot of other skill position players that are touching the ball that many times and having that effect,” Roseman said. Add that the Eagles view Barkley as a “special” player and person, and there’s the reason for the move. Coach Nick Sirianni said he isn’t worried about Barkley fitting in the new scheme that Siriani and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore are putting together. He called having multiple playmakers, such as Barkley, A.J. So, it was a strategy to go. “I know people think, well, we don’t spend on the running back position. That’s never really been the case. We would do it very carefully. So, LeSean McCoy, Brian Westbrook, those are instances of players that are really multipurpose running backs that improve the passing attack, improve the running attack.

But juxtaposed with Sirianni and general manager Howie Roseman this offseason, Lurie stands out. All we have gotten from those two is blah-blah-blah like “the end of the season didn’t go the way we wanted.” No acknowledgement of the scope of the disaster, or that moving on from it might be a wee bit complicated. Lurie can ramble on a bit, and his professorial demeanor occasionally causes him to drift toward locutions the likes of “in any losing streak, it’s multi-factoral.” But sometimes, you walk away from hearing him with a sense that you know how he actually feels about something, not just what he thinks he should project to the public.

Early in February, we shared that the Browns made sense as the opponent for the Philadelphia Eagles to open the NFL season in Brazil. Later, Peter King shared that Cleveland made “the most sense” as the international matchup for Philadelphia. Thankfully for Browns fans, unlike the Eagles, they won’t be giving up one of their home games for 2024. At the owners’ meeting, Roger Goodell shared that there should be more clarity soon on what team will make the trip to Brazil with Cleveland as one of the options.

Sirianni on Tuesday declined to name Cam Jurgens as the Eagles’ starting center in 2024 and replacement for Jason Kelce, the future Hall of Famer who announced his retirement last month. “I don’t have to make that decision anywhere near for a long, long time,” Sirianni said at the coaches’ breakfast at the NFL owners meetings Tuesday in Orlando. And so we’ll see. We’ve got a lot of time. We’ve got walk-throughs to go through, we’ve got training camp, we’ve got OTAs, as far as what that looks like. Cam’s gotten a ton of reps. If it is Cam, he’s got a ton of reps doing that, too. Jason didn’t take every snap at center last year in practice, so I’m really confident that he can do it. But we’ll see what happens.”

Team president Mark Murphy, when speaking to reporters on Tuesday, revealed that the Packers are one of two finalist teams to play a week one game in Brazil, along with the Cleveland Browns. Either the Browns or Packers will travel to face the Philadelphia Eagles, who have already been announced as the home team for that game. This contest will take place on Friday, September 6 in Sao Paulo’s Corinthians Arena, which has a listed seating capacity of just under 50,000 fans. Additionally, although the league has not yet revealed the Eagles’ opponents, the NFL did announce earlier on Tuesday that the game will be broadcast exclusively on Peacock, NBC’s streaming platform.

But as Dallas looks to fill its roster with low-cost veterans, the idea is now getting some traction in the media. Another veteran running back, Dalvin Cook, is also being mentioned given his own link to the organization. Zeke, of course, has the stronger tie after playing in Dallas from 2016-2022. He was released last year in a cap-clearing measure, with his days as an All-Pro RB seemingly behind him. Elliott spent 2023 in New England and was a serviceable part of their rotation, but hardly the superstar we once knew.

The comments section revealed a variety of reactions, and coping mechanisms, which should come as little surprise in a fanbase that has just endured 24 years of hopelessness in the hands of an inept, meddling owner. A few thoughtful readers pointed out a very real cause for hope, despite the dismal recent results. While teams picking 2nd and 3rd all struck out, teams drafting from pick number 5 through 12 hit on a rather remarkable 78% of their picks. That almost certainly means that quality starting QBs that other teams had high on their boards would have been available when the teams picking 2nd and 3rd were on the podium. Clearly the issue was not with the availability of quality starters at pick #2, but rather with the decision making of the teams doing the picking.

Player acquisition isn’t only about finding talent, of course, but the formatting of these players into what the goal is for the 2024 season. With most of the big name guys out the way, the attention turns to the 2024 NFL Draft, which is in a little over a month. Pro Days are beginning to get wrapped up, big boards are being finalized and most importantly, mock drafts are being done. This mock draft is a special one, because it not only involves trades, but there are now TWO (2) ROUNDS for your viewing pleasure. New faces in new places, plus some trades to shake things up. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 3/26/24.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

Five takeaways from Howie Roseman’s owners meetings media session - PhillyVoice
2) The Eagles felt that the defense didn’t have swagger in 2023, and wanted to change that. Roseman was asked a question about new linebacker Devin White, and he gave a typical answer about the strengths of White’s game and how he’ll fit into Vic Fangio’s defense. But it was a follow-up on White’s chippy play demeanor that coaxed an interesting response from Roseman. “Obviously, we want talent with these guys, but I think that’s accurate to say,” Roseman acknowledged. “We were looking to regain our swagger mentality back and obviously what happened at the end of the year didn’t feel good and wasn’t really acceptable for any of us. And so so we wanted to get players who can kind of bring that and have that motivation and mentality.” #JimmySays: The moment that stands out to me is when the 49ers walked right through the Eagles’ defensive backs drills, and the Eagles didn’t do a damn thing about it. Guys like Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and Devin White would never take that s**t. There would have been a pre-game fight.

Eagles takeaways from Howie Roseman: Why they signed Saquon Barkley, the appeal of C.J. Gardner-Johnson, an under-the-radar signing - PHLY
1. The Eagles finally invested in Saquon Barkley because they believe he’s a “special player” and a “freak.” Roseman might push back on the suggestion that the Eagles don’t invest in running backs because they’ve given LeSean McCoy and Brian Westbrook big deals during the past two decades, but the Barkley signing was a departure from how the Eagles approached the position during the past decade. The Eagles made the exception because they view Barkley as a top-end talent who can have a significant effect on the offense, and that type of player is rare in free agency. “For us, it’s hard to find special players at any position,” Roseman said. “We think Saquon is a special player. We think he’s a special person. And so when you’re trying to find those guys, they’re hard to find — especially on the open market. And then you put into the dynamic of has the pendulum swung so far at this position — I mean, the guy touches the ball 300 times a year, hopefully. There’s not a lot of other players, skill-position players, that are touching the ball that many times and have that effect.” In other words, the Eagles can make an exception for an exceptional player. And that’s what Barkley must be for this contract to be worth it for the Eagles, who have been one of the most efficient running offenses with less-expensive running backs. But Barkley’s ability to be a three-down running back who can be an explosive running back with the power to pick up yards after contact, the receiving ability to be a difference-maker in the passing game and the pass-blocking to play on three downs swayed them. The hope is that Barkley can have a similar effect as Christian McCaffrey in San Francisco — making a strong offense an even more potent force. And with other positions getting paid comparable dollars — Darnell Mooney is making a similar average annual salary as Barkley — the Eagles saw an opportunity to pay at the position.

Howie Talks - Iggles Blitz
Speaking of edge rushers…Howie’s most interesting comments might have been about Zack Baun. The Eagles signed him on Day One, just like Saquon and Huff. They targeted all three of the players. That doesn’t mean Baun will be a starter or key player, but he is an interesting option for Vic Fangio. Howie compared him to Andrew Van Ginkel, who played for Fangio last year at Miami. Van Ginkel had an INT, 6 sacks and 19 QB hits for Miami last year. He was able to move around and do different things. Baun has the same versatility so he could be more of a factor than people initially expected.

The Jets did an unbelievable job of having that edge rusher position really filled with – I think they had five or six guys when I look at their depth chart – and they were trying to find roles for guys and get guys playing time. We don’t play our edge guys 90 percent of the time. We believe in having fastballs off the edge and getting guys in the game. I think this perception that he’s (Huff) this liability against the run, obviously, we’ll see about that, but we believe that he has the tools in his body to make a difference and we’re excited about him.”

Offensive tackle. How the position stacks up: As I mentioned above, this is the best offensive tackle class since 2014, when five were drafted in the first round and 12 went in the top 100. Notre Dame’s Joe Alt’s experience and testing makes him the easiest evaluation; he’s the top tackle. Washington’s Troy Fautanu quieted questions about whether or not he would have to kick inside when his arms measured 34½ inches at the NFL combine. They are Nos. 5 and 9 overall in the Scouts Inc. rankings. The other talented tackles likely to go in Round 1 are Alabama’s JC Latham, Penn State’s Olu Fashanu, Georgia’s Amarius Mims and Oklahoma’s Tyler Guyton. Latham, Mims and Guyton played mostly as right tackles in college, while Fashanu had an underwhelming 2023 on the left side. Oregon State’s Taliese Fuaga might be viewed as a guard prospect, but he is the No. 5 tackle on my board. If he does kick inside, he has a chance to be an All Pro; he projects as a first-round pick regardless of where he plays. The ideal time to draft one for the best value: Arizona’s Jordan Morgan, BYU’s Kingsley Suamataia and Houston’s Patrick Paul all have second-round grades, but teams that need a tackle should be targeting one in Round 1. The talent and positional value are too great to risk waiting.

The Eagles’ proposal to allow teams to line up their offense on the field on fourth-and-20, instead of kicking off, was rejected today in a vote at the league meeting. Under the Eagles’ proposal, teams that scored a touchdown or field goal could have followed it by taking the ball at their own 20-yard line, facing a fourth-and-20. If the scoring team converted the fourth-and-20, it would keep the ball and go from there. [BLG Note: Very lame how the NFL won’t at least give this proposal a trial run.]

Counting on a second-year player who technically does not have any live action NFL experience all while they are coming off of a torn ACL is a bit of a bold move, but one that many of us assumed the Cowboys would make. Jerry also made reference to defensive alignment for this belief, the idea being that Mike Zimmer’s defense will be more aligned to stop the run. Quinn’s defense seemed focused on disrupting the passing game with the running game of secondary importance. Having Kendrick’s on board who is very familiar with Zimmer’s scheme should help somewhat in the installation of the defense for 2024. Time will tell whether or not Jerry is right in that Dallas is better in this capacity. For what it is worth, their jobs became more difficult in free agency when the Philadelphia Eagles signed Saquon Barkley. They were not the only team to add a runner in the division either as the New York Giants (who obviously lost Barkley) signed Devin Singletary while the Washington Commanders brought in Austin Ekeler. Everything got more difficult all the way around.

Schoen told reporters that Jones is “running on land,” throwing and is expected to be ready for the start of training camp and the regular season. If Schoen and coach Brian Daboll decided they want to select a quarterback at No. 6 in the 2024 NFL Draft, or even move up to select one, co-owner John Mara said Monday that they have the “green light” to do so.

That estimate does not account for the announced signings of CB James Pierre or C Michael Deiter, but I don’t expect either of those to be big-dollar deals that will substantially change the team’s cap space situation. As I have discussed before, the Commanders will need about $9.2m to sign their 9 draft picks, and they will need roughly $6.5m in ‘contingency’ to sign replacement players during the season as others are injured. There is also another $2.5m in injury benefit previously reported by OTC that will reduce the team’s available cap space. This means that the current expectation is that Adam Peters will roll over about $28m in unused cap space to 2025. Of course, this number can be further reduced if the team makes any significant free agent player signings that involve more than veteran minimum contract.

Per the NFL, an illegal hip-drop tackle is when a defender grabs an opponent and gains control, then swivels him and “unweights” him, dropping his hips on the players’ leg and foot area. This is how Andrews got injured against the Cincinnati Bengals. What does it mean to “unweight” a player? No clue, but unweight is defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary as “to reduce momentarily the force exerted by (something, such as a ski) upon a surface by shifting the weight or position of one’s body”, so make of that what you will.

Philly fans are not sad to see him go.

Our long national nightmare is over: Quez Watkins is leaving the Philadelphia Eagles.

The free agent wide receiver is headed to the other side of Pennsylvania to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to NFL insider Jeremy Fowler.

Once upon a time, Watkins seemed like a relatively nice find for the Eagles after they selected him with a sixth-round pick (No. 200 overall) in the 2020 NFL Draft. The speedster logged 62 targets for 43 receptions, 647 yards (15.0 average), and one touchdown in 2021.

But Watkins’ numbers have only worsened since his second season. His last two years combined: 72 targets, 48 receptions, 496 yards (10.3 average), and four touchdowns.

In fairness, Watkins saw limited opportunities as the Eagles’ third wide receiver behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

Still, he failed to make the most of his chances over the past two seasons. It felt like every time the Eagles targeted him, something bad happened. The stats back up the eye test; Watkins accounted for a 79.3 passer rating when targeted in 2022 and a 67.8 passer rating when targeted in 2023.

And so it’s no surprise to see the Eagles weren’t keen on keeping him. The Birds have signed veterans DeVante Parker and Parris Campbell to compete for the WR3 role. They’ll also likely add some more competition for that spot through the 2024 NFL Draft.

In Pittsburgh, Watkins is reunited with former Eagles vice president of player personnel and current Steelers assistant general manger Andy Weidl.

Nick Sirianni: Saquon Barkley is a dynamic player who brings a different element to our offense - PFT
“I’m really excited about Saquon and the things that he can do,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said Sunday, via Tom Pelissero of NFL Media. “You know he’s such a dynamic football player. Both as a running back and also the things he can do as a pass catcher. He’s going to bring an element to our offense and to our team. As much as we see him, all the highlights that we see on the tape — from my understanding and all of our homework, he’s a good leader and teammate as well. To be able to add that into our locker room and not only the playmaking ability, but the person is really important.

NFC East 2024 free agency grades: Philadelphia Eagles edition - PhillyVoice
The Eagles had definitive needs at linebacker, safety, running back, wide receiver, and backup quarterback. They addressed every one of those positions. Notable additions I liked: RB Saquon Barkley, S Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, LB Zack Baun, iOL Matt Hennessy. Notable additions I didn’t like as much: QB Kenny Pickett, WR DeVante Parker, WR Parris Campbell, LB Devin White. (Parker and Campbell come at a very low cost, so to be clear my beef with those signings is if the Eagles don’t also add an actually good receiver.) To be determined: EDGE Bryce Huff. If the Eagles get a good return for Reddick, then great. If they don’t they will have replaced him with a lesser player who makes more money. One big picture thing that I think the Eagles did a good job of this offseason was that they largely added players who could soon be entering their primes. Oren Burks and DeVante Parker aside, all of the players the Eagles added are between the ages of 25 and 27. Grade: C+.

Draft Talk – Visits - Iggles Blitz
The player I’m most excited about is WR Ainias Smith. He is a mid-round target, but I love his game. He’s 5-9, 190 and has great RAC ability. DB Cooper DeJean got hurt late in the year and couldn’t work out in Indy. He could be coming to Philly to get checked out medically. DeJean has a ton of potential. He is an athletic playmaker and you can’t get enough of those guys. It is good to see Edgerrin Cooper on the list. The Eagles must add a good LB prospect this year. Devin White has a one-year deal and Nakobe Dean is still a mystery. As for Pro Days, Eagles assistant coaches are being more active than last year. That could be because the season ended late last season or it could be that the organization made it a point of emphasis to get coaches on the road this year. Keep in mind that the players listed above are a mix of Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 and even UDFA prospects. Just because you’re interested in a player doesn’t mean you have an early grade on him.

The last time we heard from Roseman was at the year-end press conference about a week after the season ended in the playoffs in Tampa. Howie was busy in free agency. We’ll finally get some answers about his offseason plan, which included some big free agent swings like Saquon Barkley, Bryce Huff and C.J. Gardner-Johnson. The most interesting question for Roseman will be about his evaluation of Barkley and why he finally thought it was the right time to invest in the position. The Haason Reddick situation continues to hang over the Eagles as well. The team figured out a way to keep Josh Sweat but it’s unclear what Reddick’s future holds. It still seems very possible he could be traded. While it would be foolish to expect Roseman to tip his hand, we might get some hints.

He jumped 34.5 inches in the vertical and 10-foot-1 in the broad, and scouts had McKinstry timed in the 4.48-4.52 range for his 40-yard dash. An NFC area scout said to me, “Him going out there and competing despite the injury says a lot about his want-to and competitive desire to attack those question marks that were out there about him.” I could see McKinstry being selected as high as No. 17 overall to the Jaguars, and it’s hard to see him getting past the Eagles (No. 22), Packers (No. 26), Cardinals (No. 27) or Lions (No. 29) in Round 1.

The tale of two centers: What the Cowboys should expect going from Tyler Biadasz to Brock Hoffman - Blogging The Boys
We can talk about how Biadasz wasn’t a true star, or even how the voters were a little generous in sending him to the Pro Bowl, but we shouldn’t take for granted how consistently he played throughout his time in Dallas. He didn’t move mountains, but he was effective. Hoffman is entering his third year in the league and is still growing as a player. The coaching staff likes what they see in him and they may view him as somewhat comparable to Biadasz. The potential is there, but there are still some inconsistencies in his game that bring about some concern. If he’s truly Biadasz’s successor, this move will either look really smart or really dumb a year from now.

McCarthy - Big Blue View
Quarterback of the future? Play-making wide receiver who can make a difference right now? That seems to be the choice facing the New York Giants at No. 6 in the 2024 NFL Draft. It isn’t an easy choice. Do they love J.J. McCarthy, the quarterback most likely available to them in the draft? Are they blowing smoke trying to get someone like the Minnesota Vikings to move past them so they have a better shot at the wide receiver they want? We don’t know. We still, though, have a month left to argue about it. Here is my latest multi-round Giants mock draft, this one including a big swing for McCarthy.

What is the Commanders’ Chance of Hitting on a Franchise QB with Their First Round Pick? - Hogs Haven
My conclusion is, if you are expecting the QB the Commanders draft second overall to become a long-term starter and lead the team on regular playoff runs, you are betting against the odds. They might get lucky, but more likely than not you are setting yourself up for disappointment. It might be better for your mental health to lower your expectations to just a long-term starter. In that case, all you have to worry about is why teams have done so poorly drafting QBs at picks 2 through 4. Don’t ask me why that is. The best explanation I can come up with is that teams drafting in weak draft classes, or those not holding the first overall pick and needing quarterbacks, might be prone to wishful thinking about the available options. That is not fully satisfying, however, because it doesn’t explain the large number of starting quality QBs who have remained available at picks 5 through 12.

Appearing on SportsCenter on Saturday morning, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported the expectation around the NFL is Reddick will eventually be traded, with the Arizona Cardinals and Atlanta Falcons cited as potential landing spots: “The expectation leaguewide is that he is moved at some point. The Eagles went and spent on Bryce Huff, they re-signed Josh Sweat, so they have their two pass rushers. Reddick appears to be the odd man out. He does want a new deal, but this is a premier guy that should have value. He wants a new contract, plus the draft capital that it’s going to take to get him. Arizona could be a team to watch because Jonathan Gannon was with him two years ago in Philly. They had good production together. Arizona needs pass rushers. Atlanta to an extent, so there should be teams in the mix.”

Although, I honestly think I might be better than Shaq Leonard at this point. I am a little worried about how undersized this Eagles’ defensive front 7 is, and I’m not sure I see either White or Nakobe Dean as a classic ‘stack’ backer who can take on pulling guards and be physical against the run. I am pretty worried about the trust the Eagles are putting in Jordan Davis to carry this lightweight front 7 against physical run games. I would like to see some more size added to the front 7. Devin White is extremely talented, and a super fun athlete to watch, but the Eagles are going to be putting a lot of faith in Vic Fangio to turn him into a good starting linebacker in his system, or the Eagles’ linebacker play might be poor once again. My fingers are crossed that Devin White can look good in a very different system than he is used to. At the very least, we will all get to watch someone with actual starting talent at linebacker!

Depth Moves for the Offense - Iggles Blitz
Now let’s talk about Parris Campbell. He was a second round pick by the Colts back in 2019. He’s caught 117 career passes. That sounds like someone you should be interested in. But he averages 9.3 yards per catch for his career. That’s not good, to put it mildly. Campbell has solid size at 6-1, 205. He ran 4.31 at the Combine. He’s got the physical tools to be a good NFL receiver. Somehow his best NFL season was 2022, when he went 63-623-3. Campbell is proof that there is more to the NFL than size and speed. The Eagles were high on Campbell when he was coming out of Ohio State. They took JJ Arcega-Whiteside with pick 57. Campbell went to the Colts at pick 59. There is a story that scouts wanted Campbell, but were overruled by Jeffrey Lurie wanting JJAW. That may or may not be true. Either way, both players turned out to be disappointing. Campbell has at least been functional. AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith are a dynamic duo. The Eagles needed depth behind them. They signed DeVante Parker and now Campbell. That gives the team a pair of veteran players to compete for the #3 spot. Parker has had the better career, while Campbell is younger and more athletic.

The postseason wins are missing from Prescott’s résumé, but I fully expect the Cowboys to re-sign him to a deal that resets the quarterback market. So he shouldn’t be on this list for long. Prescott, who will turn 31 this summer, posted big-time numbers in 2023, including a Total QBR of 72.7 (second in the NFL), 4,516 passing yards (third) and 36 touchdown throws (first). Dallas recently restructured his contract to reduce his 2024 salary cap hit, and the team is reportedly still working toward an extension. [...] CeeDee Lamb, WR, Dallas Cowboys. Lamb posted career-best numbers in 2023, logging 135 receptions for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns. He’s a playmaker with the ball in his hands, displaying the open-field vision and juice to create after the catch. Lamb’s 29 explosive-play receptions (catches of 20 or more yards) also tied for the league lead with Tyreek Hill. He should land top-level money, either in Dallas or elsewhere.

When things were going well for this team under Quinn, the trio of McCarthy, Quinn, and special teams coordinator John Fassel more than earned their flowers as a dynamic bunch that had this team at a high level of preparation in all three phases. It didn’t take long for this to unravel when Dallas was taken out of their game scripts though, and while going from one former NFL head coach to another at defensive coordinator is good for McCarthy’s ability to focus on the offense as play-caller, a contrast in styles that didn’t complement each other as much as needed in the biggest games was evident at the end of the McCarthy/Quinn era.

At least in the near term, though, head coach Brian Daboll insisted on Saturday that Daniel Jones remains “the guy” when he is healthy. Daboll spoke to NFL insider Tom Pelissero from the NFL league meetings. The Giants signed Drew Lock as a veteran backup quarterback, and there is continued speculation that the Giants — concerned about Jones’ long-term health and his poor play in 2023 — could be looking to select a quarterback early in the 2024 NFL Draft. Daboll, though, said there is no competition for the starting job.

You meet great people, whether it’s coaches, players, staff members, and unfortunately everybody doesn’t stick together the entire time, it’s not what it was 30, 40 years ago,” Daboll said. “I’ve got a tremendous amount of respect for Saquon and all the players that went on to other places. It’s a special group when you’re going through an NFL season, you’ve got to go through ups and downs. . . . Wish him all the best except when he is playing the Giants.”

The decisions they make in the draft this year will have far bigger consequences than what they do in free agency, especially at the second overall pick (or maybe first overall if they move up), where they are certain to take a quarterback. In free agency, they didn’t add many players who appear to be in their long-term plans. I would count LB Frankie Luvu, C Tyler Biadasz, OL Nick Allegretti, and DE Dorance Armstrong among the long-term players. The majority of their other signings are one-year deals. They improved their roster to a level where the rookie quarterback won’t be surrounded by utter garbage. Would I have signed Austin Ekeler or Zach Ertz? Nope. But a year from now the Commanders can move on from most of the guys on one-year deals, and perhaps get more aggressive with long-term answers when they’ll once again be loaded up with cap space. I don’t know if that was their designed approach to free agency this offseason, but it sure seems to be set up that way, and it makes sense both from a short-term and long-term perspective. Speaking with NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero at the Annual League Meeting on Saturday, Quinn discussed the possibility of Washington selecting a QB with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft or later in April’s event. “I would say it’d be fair to envision we’d be taking a quarterback,” Quinn said. “To say where it’ll be happening, I think that’s a better question for (general manager) Adam (Peters). As the next weeks unfold there’ll be a lot of discussion, and that’s why we’ve had a great trip out seeing some guys, we’ll do that some more in the weeks ahead, but I’ve enjoyed that process with Adam, and going through it. He’s somebody that is an absolute expert at this position, what it looks like, where to go, and so going through that process has been really cool.”

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 3/23/24.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

Roob’s Observations: Understanding Roseman’s unique approach to 2024 free agency - NBCSP
4. It’s been two weeks since the Broncos released Justin Simmons, and he’s still out there. That tells you one thing: His asking price is too high. Simmons may not be quite the player he was a couple years ago, but he still made the Pro Bowl last year at 30 years old and had three interceptions, eight pass breakups, two forced fumbles and two tackles for loss. Playmaker stats. Simmons was the 5th-highest-paid safety in the NFL last year playing on the third year of a four-year, $61 million deal that ran through 2024 before he was released. He’s not going to get close to $15 million per year now, but if Kevin Byard is worth $7 ½ million per year, Simmons is certainly worth, say, $9 to $10 million per year. Why not go with CJGJ and Reed Blankenship? Blankenship is OK, but he didn’t play particularly well the second half of last year, and Simmons is clearly an upgrade. Go with Gardner-Johnson and Simmons and Blankenship gives you a capable and experienced backup who’s still young – he turned 25 earlier this month – and cost controlled for two more years. You’re not giving up on Blankenship, but Simmons and CJGJ are both proven elite players. You don’t want to load up on too many older free agents, and Simmons does turn 31 in November. And we just watched James Bradberry lose it overnight. But if Simmons would take a two-year, $18 or $19 million deal and the Eagles can line up Simmons and C.J. Gardner-Johnson at safety? I’d do it in a New York minute.

Howie Roseman’s atypical Howie Roseman offseason - BGN
Going into this offseason we knew that Nick Sirianni was on the proverbial hot seat. Howie Roseman is not on it with him, but he has attacked the start of the offseason like he is. The first week of free agency was both a typical one and an atypical one for Roseman. In isolation the moves he has made have mostly fit the Roseman template: investing in pass rush, investing in offensive line, investing in quarterback, low financial obligations and/or short term contracts to low priority positions, a player for pick trade, signing former high picks to one year contracts, adding veteran depth behind established veterans... standard Eagles moves. But taken as a whole, the Eagles offseason looks similar to the type of disjointed one that we see every year from teams that are under pressure from above to get results now. Predictably they rarely work out. Prior to free agency the Eagles tried to soften the blow of trading/cutting Haason Reddick or Josh Sweat by letting it be known that they were unhappy with their edge rushers play against the run. Fair enough, but then they went out and signed Bryce Huff, who offers little against the run.

2024 NFL free agency: One signing that can impact each divisional race this season - NFL.com
The Eagles had a top-10 offense (in both yards and points) in 2023 — but the unit faltered when it mattered most, failing to top 300 yards in a pair of losses in Weeks 17 and 18 that allowed Dallas to seize the NFC East. It surely didn’t help that no Philly running back topped 62 rushing yards in either of those games. Barkley is an electric playmaker with score-from-anywhere potential who upgrades an attack that already featured a pair of 1,000-yard receivers (A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith) boasting big-play abilities. With a rugged dual-threat quarterback (Jalen Hurts) capable of producing explosive plays on the ground or through the air, Barkley’s presence adds a different dimension to one of the NFL’s most dynamic offenses. If the two-time Pro Bowler can remain healthy, the Eagles can trot out an unstoppable offense with blue-chip personnel at every marquee position — and perhaps finish in first place.

Why Kenny Pickett joining the Eagles made sense - ESPN
Pickett was not the only quarterback Philadelphia showed interest in this offseason. The Eagles looked into Justin Fields, as well, a source familiar with the discussions said. But the Chicago Bears were inclined to trade Fields somewhere with a decent pathway to an eventual starting gig and ultimately dealt him to Pittsburgh. In Pickett, the Eagles see an accurate passer with desirable traits who still has room to develop. It’s widely acknowledged across the league that the offensive conditions in Pittsburgh weren’t ideal over the past couple seasons, which leaves room for the possibility that Pickett’s ceiling is higher than he has shown to this point. And it was readily apparent at his introductory news conference that the 25-year-old Pickett, who grew up in New Jersey and was raised as an Eagles fan, is embracing the change of scenery.

Top 10 DVOA Ratings in Losses - FTN Fantasy
10) 2001 Week 1: St. Louis Rams 20, Philadelphia Eagles 17 (OT). Eagles DVOA: 59.3%. Let’s kick off our list with the first week of the 2001 season. The Rams outgained the Eagles 364 yards to 334 yards in this game, but they also recovered all six fumbles — four by themselves and two by the Eagles. The Eagles went 3-for-3 on fourth-down conversions and came back from a 17-3 deficit in the fourth quarter with two long drives which ended with short touchdown passes to running back Cecil Martin. The Eagles also won the coin toss but they couldn’t get past their own 30. The Rams took the punt and marched downfield from their own 36 to the Eagles 8, winning on a 26-yard field goal. The Eagles had an efficient game here against the Rams team that would end the season No. 1 in DVOA.

Wide receiver D.J. Chark could be a good low-risk addition to the Cowboys’ offense - Blogging The Boys
Pro Football Focus projects Chark to earn a two-year, $13M deal. While this number may have seemed likely before free agency opened in early March, it’s hard to see him getting this number now. Chark will likely earn a deal similar to the one-year, $4M deal K.J. Osborn and Noah Brown got this spring. Chark would bring some big-time upside to Dallas’ offense if the Cowboys were to sign him. Dallas is going to be bargain shopping, and the veteran wideout would be a great low-risk addition to consider.

NFC East 2024 free agency grades: New York Giants edition - PhillyVoice
Of course, Eluemunor and Runyan will be replacing Evan Neal and Mark Glowinski. Schoen selected Neal 7th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. That same offseason he signed Glowinski to a three-year deal worth $18 million. Neal has been a turnstile his first two seasons in the NFL, and might be moving to guard. Glowinski is gone. Interestingly, Schoen is also paying Runyan and Eluemunor — who, again, are just kinda “solid,” at best — a combined $17 million per year. If that number sounds familiar, it should. It’s what S Xavier McKinney signed for in Green Bay, and it’s also what it would have cost the Giants to franchise tag him this year. Personally, I’d much rather spend on my home-grown, top 5 type of safety who is still only 24 years old than a couple of easy-to-find, average offensive linemen, especially if I’m running a team that has a long way to go before it will contend for a Super Bowl. Grade: C.

Ed says: We won’t know the official answer to that until next offseason, but it doesn’t look that way. The formula is based on compensatory free agents lost and gained, and what the Giants added looks like it has cancelled out what they lost. Here is the estimate from Over The Cap, not including the signing of Matt Peart by the Denver Broncos.

Is Jeremiah Trotter, Jr. ready to man the middle of the Commanders’ defense? - Hogs Haven
Linebacker has been a position that has perplexed the Commanders since before they were the Commanders. While Jamin Davis has taken strides with each season, next season is likely to be his last before he is a free agent. Frankie Luvu looks like he can step into whatever role is needed of him. Bobby Wagner raises the floor of the unit, but cannot be considered a long-term option. Washington would be wise to add a linebacker to this group that will rotate into this group and eventually start. Jeremiah Trotter, Jr. is a good candidate in this scenario. There are some size concerns that he can’t change, like his lack of length, but he can get stronger to mitigate some of his weaknesses. The quickness, ability to navigate to the ball, and production in the passing game make him a prospect to target on Day 2, ideally with one of the third round picks. Following Bobby Wagner around for a year could help him become a starter a middle linebacker by next season.

This deal has been rumored to be close for about a week now. The holdup before was reportedly the contract for Sneed. Apparently, they have gotten that ironed out. The Titans will have a completely revamped secondary when the 2024 NFL season opens. They signed former Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Chidobe Awuzie to a three-year contract at the start of free agency. Now they are bringing in Sneed.

Another addition to The QB Factory.

The Philadelphia Eagles are signing free agent quarterback Will Grier to a one-year contract, according to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Between signing Grier and trading for Kenny Pickett last Friday, that’s two new signal caller additions in about one week. The QB Factory keeps churning!

Grier, 28, was originally selected by the Carolina Panthers with a third-round pick (No. 100 overall) in the 2019 NFL Draft. He made his only two career starts as a rookie, both resulting in losses. Grier completed just 53.8% of his attempts for 4.4 yards per attempt, zero touchdowns, four interceptions, and a 33.2 passer rating. Pretty bad!

Carolina cut Grier after two seasons. He was then claimed off waivers by the Dallas Cowboys. Down in Texas, Grier notably overlapped with new Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and new quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier for two seasons. Grier mostly served as the third-string QB behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush; he did not play a regular season snap.

The Cowboys made a clear attempt to move on from Grier by trading for Trey Lance late last August. Grier responded by turning in a strong preseason finale performance, completing 82.9% of his passes for 8.7 yards per attempt, two touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a 122 passer rating.

After getting cut by Dallas, Grier spent time as a practice squad member with the Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots. He was ultimately signed off the Pats’ practice squad to join the Los Angeles Chargers’ roster in mid-December, reuniting him with the aforementioned Moore and Nussmeier.

And so the Eagles’ new coaching hires clearly have an affinity for Grier. In theory, at least, Grier can help Jalen Hurts, Pickett, and Tanner McKee get adjusted to Philly’s new OC. Grier can also push McKee for the QB3 job, though the latter should be considered the strong favorite for that spot.
