There was thought that Elliss might return to Philly’s practice squad if he cleared waivers. As it turns out, Elliss was claimed by the team with the second-highest priority in the claiming order, which mirrors the current 2024 NFL Draft order.
The Eagles cut Elliss to open a roster spot to sign free agent linebacker Shaq Leonard. Though he clearly struggled on defense, Elliss seemingly brought value to a special teams unit that ranks No. 2 in the NFL by FTN Fantasy’s DVOA metric. No Eagles player has played more special teams snaps than Elliss has.
Elliss originally signed with Philly’s practice squad during the 2021 season. Amidst special teams struggles in 2022, the Eagles called him up from the practice squad to help improve that unit. It looked like he had a chance to be an unexpected breakout player for them in 2023 after he stood out in some OTA practices.
But Elliss failed to prove himself as a solid starter and the coaching staff clearly did not trust him to play defensive snaps. We’ll see if the soon-to-be 25-year-old finds any staying power with the Pats.
