Much-needed linebacker help is here.

The Eagles already won one battle against the Cowboys heading into the second Beat Dallas week of the season, with news that free agent linebacker Shaquille Leonard has opted to sign with Philly. Head coach Nick Sirianni said he told Leonard to make the best decision for him and his family, which is just what he did.

Leonard was cut by the Colts nearly two weeks ago, and after clearing waivers, took visits to both the Cowboys and Eagles. The linebacker was expected to make his decision following Week 13.

The Eagles certainly proved that they need Leonard, with the 49ers attacking the middle of the field (read: Nicholas Morrow) all game on Sunday, and doing so successfully. The linebacker position in Philly is thin at best, and they had what Sirianni called an uncharacteristic night with a bunch of missed tackles. It’s been a glaring weakness for the Eagles defense.

We’ll see just how much Leonard can help in Philly. He’s obviously not the same player who earned three first-team All-Pro honors. But the Eagles are desperate so anything might help.

The Cowboys have their own depth issue at linebacker after losing Leighton Vander Esch for the season. But they won’t be getting Leonard to help them out.
