UPDATED FOR CLARITY: Sean Desai has indeed been stripped of his defensive coordinator title, according to Jeff McLane. Matt Patricia is the new DC. Desai will remain on the Eagles’ coaching staff.
ORIGINAL STORY BELOW.
On NFL GameDay Morning, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport dropped some news that no Eagles fans saw coming. Rapoport said that current Eagles defensive coordinator Sean Desai will be moved to the box on Monday night against the Seattle Seahawks and defensive assistant Matt Patricia will call plays from the sideline.
Rapoport doesn’t say that Desai has been demoted, but FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer uses stronger language in his report, saying “Philly very quietly made a change at defensive coordinator this week.”
To be perfectly honest, I had forgotten that Patricia was even ON the Eagles staff, let alone in the position of “senior defensive assistant.” He was hired this past off-season and most recently served as a senior football advisor for the New England Patriots. He also, weirdly, coached the offensive line there during the 2022 season.
A little @Eagles scoopage today: Philly very quietly made a change at defensive coordinator this week moving out Sean Desai to another position and replacing him with Matt Patricia. Desai remains with the team in different capacity but Patricia now runs and calls the defense…— Jay Glazer (@JayGlazer) December 17, 2023
You may remember Patricia from his failed stint as the Detroit Lions head coach from 2018-2020 and as New England’s defensive coordinator from 2012-2017 (when his defense allowed 41 points to the Eagles in Super Bowl LII). Patricia joined the NFL coaching ranks in New England as an assistant o-line coach before being switched to linebackers coach, one season as safeties coach, and then his tenure as their DC.
This move could very well mean that Desai will not be on staff next season and that the Birds will have some weird, weird vibes heading into the stretch run of the season. Hooray!
