Eagles vs. Bills stats preview

You know the drill by now; it’s another Philadelphia Eagles stats preview. As always, I’m working with my podcast partner Shane Haff who podcasts for BGN and has some great designs that will make this article easier to follow. All stats are from Sports Info Solution, FTN Fantasy, and ESPN.

Eagles Tendencies

I’m still waiting for the day when the Eagles run Pony personnel enough for it to appear on this chart! At this point in the season, the Eagles’ numbers remain pretty similar, but I wouldn’t mind seeing the designed rollout number increase from 32nd in the league. It feels like the Eagles should aim to get Jalen Hurts on the move a little more if his knee is OK.

The Eagles bought some blitzes this week against Patrick Mahomes, but it is still a defense that almost always rushes 4.

Bills Tendencies

The Bills’ offense is weird. They just fired their offensive coordinator, Ken Dorsey, but the numbers are outstanding. Ranking 1st in the NFL from 11 personnel is no joke. Ranking top 10 in success rate in every single metric in the ‘basic category’ section is pretty incredible. This team also ranks in the top 5 in both zone and gap scheme runs which is really surprising.

The Bills’ offense may look really good, but the defense does not. Injuries have taken their toll on this defense and they have some obvious weaknesses. The defense is mainly a light box defense with a lot of two-high shells, so this could be a big week for the Eagles’ run game. The Bills are also the worst team in the NFL when they blitz, so if they decide to bring pressure, the Eagles need to take advantage.

Matchups

Has there ever been a team that looks this good on offense that has fired their offensive coordinator? It is pretty crazy! The Bills actually rank above the Eagles in both DVOA and success rate on offense which feels absurd! The offense has obviously had struggles this year, but expect this to be a really tough game for the Eagles' defense. The offense will have to score, and they shouldn’t have too much trouble against this Bills’ defense.

The Bills are also very good in the trenches. The more I look at the numbers for this game, the more I am surprised that the Bills are 6-5. It feels like this is much better than their record suggests.

The Eagles have to take advantage of late downs in this game as the Bills’ defense clearly struggles in these situations.

Look a the improvement of the Eagles’ offense in the redzone! This was a big talking point a few weeks ago, but the Eagles have continued to get better and better on offense in the redzone. However, the Eagles’ defense hasn’t got any better in the redzone and they continue to struggle, especially with over and crossing routes. The Bills are good in the redzone on both offense and defense (how is this team 6-5 again?) so the Eagles can’t rely on stopping the Bills in the redzone as they did against the Chiefs this past week.

This should be a really good game! The Bills look like a very good team when you look at the stats sheet, and Josh Allen is still a fantastic quarterback who is capable of producing incredible performances. I’m looking forward to this one, and hopefully, I'm back breaking down a victory next week.
