Gardner Minshew will be wearing a different jersey number with the Eagles

His old one obviously wasn’t an option.

After previously wearing No. 15 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Gardner Minshew will now wear the No. 10 jersey with the Philadelphia Eagles. At least, that’s what the Eagles’ official roster page indicates.

Minshew obviously couldn’t retain his old number since No. 15 is retired in Philly for Pro Football Hall of Fame halfback Steve Van Buren.

As the world’s first and foremost expert on all things #JerseyNumberAnalytics, my take on Minshew’s new number is ... it’s not great.

It could be worse. I do think double digits work better than a single digit for him given he’s worn that before and he’s on the smaller side for a quarterback.

But the history of Eagles quarterbacks wearing No. 10 isn’t inspiring. The last five passers to sport the number, dating back to 1979:

  • Nick Mullens (2021)
  • Chase Daniel (2016)
  • Koy Detmer (1998-2005)
  • Pat Ryan (1991)
  • John Walton (1979)

Not the best bunch.

In fairness to Minshew, his options were limited. His old No. 5 from his East Carolina days is obviously retired for Donovan McNabb. His No. 16 from Washington State is worn by Quez Watkins. The Eagles aren’t giving out No. 9 out for some time, if ever again. He could’ve taken No. 17, though that would be an odd look.

He really should’ve insisted on the Eagles giving him No. 11. The Eagles seem to be reluctant to give that out after trading away Carson Wentz, which is weird. Yes, Wentz absolutely contributed to the Eagles winning their first Super Bowl, and that much should be appreciated. But he was also really bad last year and he ultimately forced his way out of Philly. His number doesn’t need to be honored.

But, alas, No. 10 it is for Minshew.
