UPDATE: John Clark specifically notes that Jalen Hurts and the Eagles’ starters will not play against the Jets, as expected.
ORIGINAL STORY BELOW.
If you were hoping to see the Philadelphia Eagles play their starters in the team’s preseason finale against the New York Jets, I have some bad news to share. The Eagles are expected to rest “most, if not all, of their starters” on Friday night, according to NFL insider Mike Garafolo.
Nick Sirianni has said he values the #Eagles’ joint practices because they can show more of their scheme than in games, where everyone has access to the film. Plus, it provides game-type situations in a more controlled setting. We’ll see how the strategy works out. https://t.co/N7hXq81Pbu— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) August 27, 2021
On one hand, the Eagles did get some good work in against the Jets in practice this week. They clearly out-shined their fellow green team.
The Eagles have also successfully managed to avoid major injuries this summer with a conservative approach. Practices were significantly shorter than they were in the Doug Pederson era. And the Eagles really only played their starters for a couple drives in the first preseason game before mostly resting them last week.
On that note, a number of key players — including starting quarterback Jalen Hurts — are set to go from playing on August 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers to not again until September 12 against the Atlanta Falcons. There were joint training camp practices during that layoff, yes, but no live game snaps. It could’ve been nice to see Philly give their starters another series or two.
It’s hard to blame the Eagles for wanting to avoid injuries; we know too well how they’ve been hit hard in that department in recent seasons. But it remains to be seen if there will be any “rust” after a long layoff.
The Eagles sitting their starters is also obviously a disappointment from an entertainment perspective. We could be in store for another ugly and unwatchable game tonight. Of course, it’ll be worth it if it ultimately helps them win when the real games start.
Should the Eagles rest their starters against the Jets?
