Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...
Ranking the NFL’s top 10 tight ends for 2021: Execs, coaches, players make their picks - ESPN+
6) Goedert’s game is similar to Hockenson’s — multifaceted and effective. Per Pro Football Focus, Goedert is the only tight end in the NFL with receiving and run-blocking grades of 80.0 or higher since 2018. This stat was eye-popping: Goedert reached a maximum speed of 25.34 mph this season, per Next Gen Stats, the second-highest mark of any NFL player. “He kicked ass when we played them. Tough,” said a prominent NFL defensive coach. “He’s a handful off the line of scrimmage and downfield.” And his game should get stronger once he’s the full-time tight end in Philly. Zach Ertz is still on the Eagles’ roster, but the front office has discussed a potential Ertz deal with teams for months. Goedert, who played 11 games last year, received 10.9% of the Eagles’ offensive target but was still second on the team in catches (46) and yards (524), and paced for 67 catches in a bad offense over 16 games. “Eagles won’t be very good, but he’ll be a focal point and will do well with that,” an NFC exec said. “He’s balanced. Does it all.” [BLG Note: Ertz finished four spots below Goedert at 10th overall in this polling.]
Eagles wide receiver corps features DeVonta Smith excitement, Jalen Reagor concerns - BGN
So friggin’ excited to watch this guy dominate in camp before thriving in the regular season. Seriously, DeVonta has the potential to be pretty darn good from the jump. Not crazy to think he could be the best Eagles rookie receiver ever. He’s just so talented; there isn’t really a major weakness to his game. But what about his size?! You mean, the same size that hasn’t limited him in any meaningful way thus far? Yeah, not sweating that. Smith is easily the Eagles’ best receiver and should be their primary volume target. A trusty weapon for Jalen Hurts to work with now that the Alabama alumni are reunited.
NFC East Mixtape Vol.13: Epic Wins Over the Last Decade - BGN Radio
Brandon Lee Gowton and RJ Ochoa put a positive spin on things and reflected on the most epic victories that the Cowboys and Eagles have experienced to their division rivals over the last ten years.
‘His Level Of Focus Is On A Different Level’: Agent Nicole Lynn On Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts - CBS Philly
CBS Local’s DJ Sixsmith recently chatted with Hurts’ agent Nicole Lynn about her client and why he is built for the bright lights of Philadelphia. “Jalen is so locked in in a quarterback way. He’s focused on the goal. He doesn’t let any of the outside stuff bother him,” said Lynn. “He’s been through so many trials and tribulations and he doesn’t care about any of that. He always has his eye on the prize and I love that about him.” “His level of focus is honestly on a different level. He’s not a guy that wants to take all the interviews and be on the red carpet. He knows his job and shows up every day to do it. He’s so calm. He’s got a swag to him and he’s so cool.”
Eagles mailbag: Will John Hightower make the roster in 2021? - NBCSP
I get that there would be frustration if the Eagles give JJAW another chance, but there’s a reason he was a second-round pick and teams are never in a hurry to give up on top draft picks. This spring, we learned that JJAW has been getting some reps inside as a slot receiver, which could mean the Eagles think he has some versatility or they’re simply trying to exhaust all their options before they give up on him. OK, I guess I didn’t really answer the question yet, did I? Here it goes: Yes, Hightower can absolutely make the team, but it won’t be easy. In fact, if I did another 53-man projection right now, I’m not sure Hightower would be on it. He’ll have to earn his spot in training camp, which is possible but certainly not guaranteed by any stretch.
Deshaun Watson situation remains quiet, two weeks from opening of training camp - PFT
A team like the Broncos, Dolphins, or Eagles would likely be more inclined to trade for Watson now if it’s known that he won’t be placed on paid leave pending the resolution of the cases. While his status would present a P.R. problem for his new team, the fact that he’s one of the best quarterbacks in all of football surely will cause some team to accept that short-term complication.
Mailbag: The Latest on Rodgers and Watson - Sports Illustrated
If I had to guess, Jason, I think Watson has played his last snap as a Texan. New GM Nick Caserio has really started to build through the middle of the roster with guys that fit the program and can serve as the guts of the team—and it at least looks like they’ll work on getting more high-end guys to compose their core over time. I don’t know if I see the roster the way most do; I actually think they’ll be competitive week to week, even if it only adds up to a three- or four-win season in the end. But they certainly are pretty far from where they were a few years ago, and from contending for a championship. That puts them in the opposite position to the Packers, which is to say there’d be less to worry about when trading away a franchise quarterback. I think the situation is at the point where everyone might be better off getting a fresh start—and for clarity’s sake, I didn’t think that the first few months of the offseason. Now, if I’m Caserio, because Watson’s an elite 25-year-old quarterback, I’m still not done exhausting avenues to try to make it work. I just don’t know if those are there for the team right now, all things considered.
Scouting Malik Willis: Liberty QB offers Jalen Hurts-like skill set - NFL.com
He reminds me of: I couldn’t come up with a clear-cut comparison for Willis. He makes some Josh Allen-type plays but he lacks Allen’s rare size (6-5, 237). As a runner, he reminds me a little bit of Taysom Hill because of his suddenness and strength. However, in terms of build and skill set, I think he is most similar to Jalen Hurts. They both have really powerful lower bodies and can use their running ability to take over games. Both are inconsistent passers, but the ability is there and just needs to be developed. Willis is more dynamic and explosive, but I thought Hurts was a more trustworthy decision-maker on the field.
Golden Nuggets: Jordan Matthews has added weight and is looking to make it as a TE - Niners Nation
ESPN’s Turron Davenport reported last month that, at the time, Matthews had added 30 pounds during the transition to tight end. HUB listed Matthews at 235 on its roster of attendees. NFL Network’s Ian Rapport reports that Matthews has actually added over 15 pounds and was among the many attendees at Tight End University in Nashville, Tennessee. The gathering of NFL tight ends was organized by George Kittle of the 49ers, Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs, and former NFL tight end Greg Olsen. Rapoport adds that Matthews continues to work out in Nashville with a group of tight ends that includes Kittle and Robert Tonyan of the Green Bay Packers.
Have we been pronouncing ‘Kelce’ wrong for nine years? - Arrowhead Pride
When the news began making the rounds on Twitter on Tuesday, we at Arrowhead Pride thought it had to be a practical joke or a sham. Had we really been pronouncing the “Kelce” in Kansas City Chiefs tight end “Travis Kelce” wrong since 2013?
Re-visiting some of the best Dallas Cowboys wins against division rivals in recent memory - Blogging The Boys
There was serious thought to picking another overtime win over the Eagles, the one that Amari Cooper walked off in 2018. Given that the Cooper moment partly happened due to a tipped pass, it felt awkward to claim it as the best overall win. You would have a hard time finding any warts with the game that was ultimately chosen though, Dallas’ overtime win against the Eagles on October 30th, 2016. This was the first matchup between Dak Prescott and Carson Wentz and the NFL totally hyped it up in the run-up to the contest.
Saquon Barkley given fifth-highest odds to lead the NFL in rushing yards - Big Blue View
Even though Saquon Barkley is returning from an ACL tear, oddsmakers have high hopes for him in 2021. The New York Giants running back was given a 9/1 chance to lead the NFL in rushing yards in odds released today by SportsBetting.ag. The top six are: 1. Derrick Henry 3/1, 2. Dalvin Cook 5/1, 3. Nick Chubb 7/1, 4. Christian McCaffrey 8/1, T5. Saquon Barkley 9/1, T5. Jonathan Taylor 9/1. In 2018, his only full season as a pro, Barkley was second in the league with 1,307 rushing yards. The Giants’ playbook still revolves around him, and he will look to challenge that total assuming he is fully healthy for Week 1. However, durability concerns make it unlikely that he will continue to average over 15 attempts per game.
Report: Washington won’t get long-term deal done with Brandon Scherff before Thursday’s franchise tag deadline - Hogs Haven
There is a small, but unlikely, chance that Washington could negotiate a long-term deal between the end of the season, and the start of the new league year when Scherff will become a free agent. This would be a drastic change from the stalemate that has been going on for the last 3 years. The more likely scenario sees Scherff signing a big money deal, and Washington hoping to get a high compensatory pick for him.
What we know about the arrest of Richard Sherman - Field Gulls
Former Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman was arrested by Redmond (WA) police on Wednesday on suspicion of burglary domestic violence. As is standard procedure in the state of Washington, domestic violence suspects are always held without bail until they can appear before a judge. More details have since emerged about the alleged incident along with additional legal problems Sherman could be facing. Here is what we know so far.
