UPDATE: Welp, looks like we won’t be seeing kelly green until 2023 at the soonest. The Inquirer’s Rob Tornoe reports the Eagles have already submitted their black jersey as their alternate for the 2022 NFL season. Lame!
ORIGINAL STORY BELOW.
A new memo sent out to NFL teams today could have Eagles fans jumping for joy. The league is allowing alternate helmets for the 2022 season:
NFL approved alternate helmets today for teams wearing throwback uniforms starting in 2022, per league sources. This opens the door to the defending world-champion Bucs wearing the old white helmets with the orange swashbuckling Buccaneer as early as 2022.

Every Eagle fan reading that has one thing popping into their head: kelly green. It could be back for 2022!
The Eagles last wore their kelly green uniforms in Week 1 of the 2010 season against the Packers as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the 1960 NFL Championship team. In the years since, the league has made players have just a single helmet for the entire year for health and safety reasons, prohibiting the Eagles from using a different helmet, specifically one with a kelly green shade as opposed to midnight green.
The chance to have an alternate kelly green helmet could introduce a whole new uniform set for the Birds.
The Eagles have been wearing midnight green jerseys since 1996. They introduced a black alternate uniform in 2003, which they’ve used frequently. While some fans would love to have kelly green back as the team’s primary color full time, I doubt Jeffrey Lurie would do so. I personally dig it too. It represents the most successful era and Eagles history. They won a Super Bowl wearing it!
As an alternate uniform to wear once or twice per year at home though? SIGN. ME. UP. A Sunday Night Football game at the Linc wearing kelly green against the Cowboys? That’s the stuff I live for.
UPDATE: Here’s an important tidbit from NFL PR:
To be clear, clubs must inform @nfl345 of their intent to use an alternate color helmet for the 2022 season by no later than July 31. This is not for '21 season.

Eagles management will have until the end of next month to decide if they want to give the fans what they want.
