Eagles submit unsuccessful waiver claim on former 49ers wide receiver

Joe Douglas got him instead.

The Philadelphia Eagles submitted a waiver claim on recently released San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Matt Cole, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

The Birds didn’t get him, though, because the New York Jets’ claim took precedence. The waiver wire order mirrors the 2021 NFL Draft order and the Jets are second while the Eagles are sixth. Joe Douglas beat out his old friend Howie Roseman this time. The New Orleans Saints also put a claim in on Cole.

Cole attended McKendree University (Division II) before signing with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2020. He spent time on the Dolphins’ practice squad before being poached by the 49ers last December. Now Cole is a member of the Jets.

Cole projects as a long shot to make New York’s roster, which means he could again be available in the future. Perhaps the Eagles will try to add him if they get another chance down the road.
