The most concerning NFC East development from the 2021 NFL Draft?
The real answer, of course, is the Philadelphia Eagles picking DeVonta Smith. The Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, and Washington Football Team should all be pretty worried about defending The Slim Reaper.
Shifting the focus of the question to the Eagles’ rivals, though, what was the most troubling thing accomplished by their enemies? Was it a draft pick they made?
Not for me. Rather, it was Dave Gettleman trading down for the first time ever and acquiring the Chicago Bears’ 2022 first-round pick. Suddenly, the Giants have the ammunition to pivot if/when Daniel Jones fails to secure his place as North Jersey’s franchise quarterback this season. In addition to an extra first, the G-Men also own two third-round and fourth-round selections next year.
Perhaps I’m getting ahead of myself but I can’t help but think about a scenario where the Giants make an aggressive push for a long-time Eagles killer ... Russell Wilson.
Think about it. Wilson clearly wants out of Seattle and there have been rumors of him wanting to play in the New York market. It’s not exactly hard to imagine his entertainer wife, Ciara, desiring a move to The Big Apple. And remember when Wilson played for the Yankees in spring training?
Assuming Jalen Hurts fails to thrive this year, the Eagles could also be in play for Wilson down the road. They’ve also been linked to Russ and they have even more ammo than the Giants with potentially three 2022 first-round picks.
Then again, Wilson has a no-trade clause that allows him to dictate where he wants to go. And I can’t help but think he’d prefer New York to Philly.
R.J. Ochoa and I discussed this possibility and much more in this week’s NFC East Mixtape featured on both the Bleeding Green Nation and Blogging The Boys podcast feeds. Download it or use the embed below:
Other show topics include but are not limited to:
- Grading the NFC East draft classes and using a composite score to rank them from best to worst
- RJ accusing DeVonta Smith of being a fraud
- Why Washington’s draft was a failure
- Exploring a timeline where the Eagles don’t tank in Week 17 and how that could majorly change the division’s outlook (RJ actually wrote about that for BTB)
- The Cowboys eschewing character concerns once again
Overall, it’s a pretty decent episode. Check it out! And if you like what you hear, consider leaving a rating/review on both the BGN and BTB feeds. Maybe even troll the Cowboys a little bit in your review on the BTB feed?
