Rasul Douglas signs with the Raiders

Considering the Philadelphia Eagles’ current starting cornerbacks are Darius Slay and ... (a tumbleweed blows by) ... it’s safe to say the Birds could afford to sign a free agent at that position. Fortunately for them, there are still some worthwhile options remaining.

One corner they will NOT be signing, however, is their third-round pick from the 2017 NFL Draft: Rasul Douglas. He instead agreed to terms with the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday afternoon.

Douglas found himself on the roster bubble in training camp last year and ended up getting waived. The Carolina Panthers claimed him and he had some early success before ultimately falling back to Earth. We previously wrote about as much while downplaying the viability of a return to Philly:

There’s this perception out there that Douglas was a great pickup for the Carolina Panthers after the Eagles cut him last year. The reality is that Douglas had zero interceptions and a 108.5 passer rating when targeted. I think Douglas, who turns 26 in August, can be an acceptable low-end starter. The Eagles should be trying out new options instead of just looking to the past, though.

The Panthers clearly weren’t dying to retain Douglas. The terms of his new contract have yet to emerge, which likely suggests it’s a minimum-ish deal.

Assuming he makes the Raiders’ roster, the Eagles will get to see Douglas when they head out west to play in Las Vegas for the first time ever this season. Here’s wishing ‘Sul success when he’s not matched up against his former team.
