Despite the Philadelphia Eagles’ need to fill many holes on the roster, across nearly all position groups, they aren’t likely to be very active during free agency — at least not for any high-profile, big money contributors. Their salary cap situation doesn’t allow it.
But that’s not to say they won’t acquire anybody.
Howie Roseman and the front office have really doubled down on their efforts to get younger, both on the field and among the coaching staff, so I feel like it would be a surprise for them to load up on veterans during free agency. But that would be my preference.
They’re going to add plenty of rookies during the draft, and I would assume the Eagles will also work on bringing in some cheap undrafted free agents, but what the team really needs is leadership. Some older guys who know their way around the league, know what’s required of them on and off the field, and can set a higher bar for some of the younger players, would provide some stability in the ever-changing locker room.
I still wish the Eagles hadn’t let Josh McCown leave, but signing someone like Ryan Fitzpatrick would be a solid move. Someone near the end of his career, a player who competes like a starter but is also fine in a backup/leadership role, but also someone who has experience helping coach up young QBs. That in addition to the bargain-bin signings the team will be forced to rely on.
Which free agent do you realistically want the Eagles to sign?
