The NFL is expected to officially expand their regular season schedule to 17 games this week, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter.
NFL is expected to expand the regular season schedule this week to 17 games. The league had played a 16-game regular season schedule since 1978, by far the longest stretch without a change in NFL history.

This expansion has been long expected. The new collective bargaining agreement that was agreed upon last year allowed the league to expand to 17 games as soon as 2021.
As far as the Philadelphia Eagles as concerned, their extra opponent is expected to be the same place finisher from the AFC East. That’s the New York Jets, who currently hold the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. And it’s expected to be a road game for Philly. New interconference matchups elsewhere in the NFC East:

- New York Giants at Miami Dolphins
- Dallas Cowboys at New England Patriots
