UPDATE: Nathan Gerry is signing with the San Francisco 49ers, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark. Not returning to the Philadelphia Eagles, as expected.
ORIGINAL STORY BELOW.
Nathan Gerry had a free agent visit with the San Francisco 49ers, according to the NFL’s official transaction wire.
Some will be surprised that Gerry is drawing interest after struggling as a starter for the Eagles. San Fran’s interest in the 26-year-old linebacker could be related to former Philadelphia assistant and current 49ers defensive pass game specialist/secondary coach Cory Undlin being on staff.
If Gerry ends up signing, he’ll be a former Eagles linebacker serving being coached by a former Eagles linebacker. You might recall that the 49ers promoted DeMeco Ryans to defensive coordinator with Robert Saleh leaving to become head coach of the New York Jets.
I have a hard time believing Gerry will sign a contract that helps the Eagles’ compensatory pick formula. At the very least, though, fans would be happy to see Philly not re-sign him. Gerry was the third least popular player on the roster in our “stay or go” series with only 6% of the vote wanting him to return.
