UPDATE: K’Waun Williams re-signed with the San Francisco 49ers. Won’t be joining the Eagles, #AsExpected.
ORIGINAL STORY BELOW.
The NFL’s legal tampering period has been ... expectedly uneventful for the Philadelphia Eagles thus far but, hey, we actually have some “news” to talk about today! The Birds are one of several teams interested in free agent cornerback K’Waun Williams, according to a report from Manish Mehta.
The San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, and Indianapolis Colts are also said to be in the mix. Mehta says Williams is set to earn between $4 and $5 million annually.
If the Eagles had cap space and were in “win now” mode, signing Williams could make sense. He’s graded out as one of the better slot cornerbacks in the league in recent years, allowing just a 76.1 passer rating in 2019 and a 81.9 passer rating in 2020.
However, Williams doesn’t appear to be a natural fit for the “retooling” Eagles. They’re not in a position to splurge on a veteran defensive back who turns 30 in July. I’m sure Williams — a North Jersey native — might rather prefer to reunite with Robert Saleh on the Jets, anyway.
The guess here is the Eagles aren’t so seriously interested in signing Williams as much as they’re being used by his agent to help drive up his market.
