Eric Wilson has a new NFL home after getting cut by the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday. The Houston Texans claimed the veteran linebacker off waivers, according to the league’s official transaction wire. The Texans had the No. 2 overall spot in claiming priority since it mirrors the current 2022 NFL Draft order.
This development comes as a bit of a surprise. Wilson has struggled this year. Then again, it’s hardly like the Texans’ front office is a bastion of good judgement.
The good news for the Eagles is they’re no longer on the hook for the rest of Wilson’s contract. The Texans picking him means Houston has to pay the rest of his 2021 base salary, which comes out to $517,500.
Had the Eagles cut Wilson before the trade deadline, he would have not been subject to waivers as a vested veteran.
So, ultimately, not the worst possible outcome for an unsuccessful signing by the Eagles.
