Carson Wentz will be a healthy scratch for the Philadelphia Eagles’ Week 17 game against the Washington Football Team tonight, according to a report from NFL insider Mike Garafolo. Garafolo had the following to say on NFL Network:
Carson Wentz expected to be inactive tonight as Jalen Hurts starts and Nate Sudfeld backs him up. The Eagles, I am told, still believe that they can salvage this situation with Wentz in 2021 and beyond. Don’t want to risk anything, he will not be in uniform tonight.
Hey, the Eagles are finally doing something smart for once! Nice to see.
There’s clearly no benefit to having Wentz active for this meaningless game. Whether they intend on keeping him or trading him, they need him to enter this offseason healthy. Sitting him tonight ensures as much.
While Jalen Hurts will start against Washington, it sounds like he might not play the entire game. Jeff McLane has indicated there could be a “quick hook” for the rookie quarterback. No sense in playing Hurts a lot if he’s getting killed out there with Brett Toth and Matt Pryor as his potential starting offensive tackles. Might as well just try to get through this must-lose game with Sudfeld under center.
