The Eagles are touchdown underdogs to a banged up 49ers team

Do you have any faith in the Birds?

The 0-2-1 Philadelphia Eagles are headed out west to play the 2-1 San Francisco 49ers this weekend. And to no surprise, the Birds are heading into Sunday’s game as underdogs. DraftKings Sportsbook has the 49ers as seven-point favorites.

It’s hard to have much faith in the Eagles given how bad they’ve looked. Carson Wentz is playing like the worst quarterback in the NFL right now and it’s not like his support system is going to help drag him out of the mud. Injuries are piling up in Philly once again.

Injury issues are also plaguing the 49ers. They somehow have it even worse than the Eagles but they didn’t let that stop them from blowing out the New York Giants in Week 3. Truly impressive to watch them win comfortably despite missing the likes of Jimmy Garoppolo, George Kittle, Raheem Mostert, Nick Bosa, Solomon Thomas, Tevin Coleman, Deebo Samuel, Richard Sherman, and Dee Ford. The 49ers might be getting some of those guys back this week, so that should only make them even more formidable.

If you’re trying to look at this game from an Eagles optimist perspective, you could point out how the 49ers have only beaten the Giants and New York Jets. Clearly the worst two teams in the NFL.

You could also note how Jim Schwartz’s defenses have held Kyle Shanahan’s offenses to an average of 15.5 points per game in six meetings since 2009. Schwartz’s side is 5-1 in those contests with the one loss being a 13 to 12 defeat. Maybe the Eagles’ defensive line — which came alive for eight sacks and 18 (!) quarterback hits in Week 3 — finds a way to wreak havoc on the 49ers.

But even if Philly’s defense holds up their end of the bargain, the Eagles are still going to need to find a way to get their offense going. It’s not easy to imagine how that’ll happen with Wentz playing as poorly as he is while also going up against a top five DVOA defense.

I can’t possibly trust the Eagles to win this game. Covering the spread might not be impossible but I have more faith in the 49ers to do that on their side.
