The Philadelphia Eagles officially made some changes to the practice squad on Tuesday morning. An overview:
- Running back Michael Warren and tight end Jordan Franks were released.
- Tight end Jason Croom and cornerback Michael Jacquet were signed.
Let’s sort through this on a player-by-player basis.
MICHAEL WARREN
The Eagles signed Warren as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft. He failed to really stand out in training camp but the team kept him around on the practice squad anyway. With the Eagles already having four running backs on the main roster and two others on the practice squad, Warren was obviously expendable.
JORDAN FRANKS
The Eagles only signed Franks to the practice squad two weeks ago. We noted how the 24-year-old didn’t have much NFL experience under his belt with just two career receptions for 37 yards in six total games played.
JASON CROOM
The Eagles clearly think more of Croom than Franks. Croom, also 24, boasts more NFL experience with 22 receptions for 259 yards (11.8) average and one touchdown in 15 games played (three starts) back in 2018. Croom actually led all Buffalo tight ends in receptions that year before spending the 2019 season on injured reserve. The Bills released Croom from their practice squad last week.
With Dallas Goedert expected to miss “some time” due to an ankle injury, the Eagles could look to elevate Croom to the game day roster to give them more depth behind Zach Ertz and Richard Rodgers.
MICHAEL JACQUET
The Eagles signed Jacquet as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft. He curiously earned praise from Doug Pederson as one of the team’s training camp standouts but clearly didn’t do enough to make the practice squad ... until now, that is.
With Avonte Maddox also expected to miss “some time” due to injury, the Eagles needed more cornerback depth. They only have four healthy corners on the 53: Darius Slay, Trevor Williams, Cre’Von LeBlanc, and Nickell Robey-Coleman. Adding Jacquet gives the team a fifth body at the position.
MORE ROSTER MOVES COMING?
The Eagles curiously haven’t placed Jalen Reagor on injured reserve yet, which indicates they have some level of hope he can return sooner than expected.
We’ll see if Goedert and/or Maddox go on IR. Seems possible.
It should be noted that Quez Watkins and Will Parks are now eligible to be activated from IR after missing three weeks. Just remains to be seen if they’re healthy enough to be brought back the roster.
16 player (plus one exemption) practice squad overview
Note that the Eagles can designate up to four protections later today.
