The Philadelphia Eagles made several roster moves on Tuesday afternoon. An overview:
- Vinny Curry and Craig James moved to injured reserve
- Sua Opeta signed from the practice squad to the roster
- Jordan Franks signed to the practice squad
Let’s sort through this on a player-by-player basis.
VINNY CURRY
Curry suffered a hamstring injury in Week 1 and looked to be in serious pain. He’s reportedly expected to miss four weeks.
With Derek Barnett dealing with an ankle injury and Brandon Graham going through the league’s concussion protocol, the Eagles are down to three healthy defensive ends: Josh Sweat, Genard Avery and Casey Toohill. The Eagles could look to call up practice squad pass rusher Joe Ostman for Sunday.
CRAIG JAMES
James is reportedly expected to miss three weeks so he might be activated as soon as he’s eligible to return in 21 days.
The Eagles’ special teams unit takes a hit with one of their two captains missing. James being out also leaves the Eagles with just four healthy cornerbacks: Darius Slay, Avonte Maddox, Nickell Robey-Coleman, and Cre’Von LeBlanc. The Eagles could look to call up practice squad corner Trevor Williams for Sunday.
SUA OPETA
The Eagles used one of their four practice squad protections on Opeta last week before using the NFL’s new 55-man roster rules to promote him as opposed to signing him.
But now the Eagles are straight up signing him to their 53-man roster. They clearly feel the need for more offensive line depth with the injuries and uncertainty up front, although Lane Johnson is reportedly expected to return this Sunday.
JORDAN FRANKS
The Eagles worked out Franks leading up to Week 1. Here’s what we wrote about him at the time:
The 24-year-old tight end went undrafted in 2018 before signing with the Cincinnati Bengals. Franks has two career receptions for 37 yards in six total games played. The Bengals waived him during final cuts.
The Eagles already have three tight ends on the 53 with Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert, and Richard Rodgers in the fold. Franks joins Caleb Wilson on the practice squad to give the Eagles five bodies at that position.
STILL ONE OPEN ROSTER SPOT
Now that Week 1 is over, NFL teams can sign vested veterans without their salaries being guaranteed for the entire season. To be determined how the Eagles will fill their final spot. Cordy Glenn? Devonta Freeman? Someone else?
