Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

BREAKING: Washington RB Derrius Guice released after arrest for domestic violence - Hogs Haven
Derrius Guice’s NFL career has been marred by a series of injuries(3x on IR in 2 seasons), and now he has a different kind of problem that could keep him off the field. The Washington Post is reporting that Guice has been arrested on domestic violence charges, including one count of strangulation, a felony. He was also charged with three counts of assault and battery and one count of destruction of property. Update: Derrius Guice has been released.

Vinny Curry, Eagles reportedly agree to terms - BGN
Indeed, Curry could be a good role player for the Eagles if he picks up where he left off from late last year. He figures to be the team’s third or fourth defensive end behind obvious starters Brandon Graham and Derek Barnett. Curry played more defensive snaps than Josh Sweat (38.5% vs. 34.5%) in 2019 but we might see the latter go ahead this year. Curry’s return isn’t good news for the Eagles’ young edge rushers such as Genard Avery, Joe Ostman, Shareef Miller, and Casey Toohill. The Eagles will probably keep six defensive ends at most ... and maybe only five. With the Graham, Barnett, Currry, and Sweat quartet locked in, the other guys are fighting for one or two spots on the 53-man roster. And they’re not going to be in the actual playing rotation (barring injury). Kind of disappointing to spend two fourth-round picks on Miller and Avery and not have them contribute at all.

Eagles mailbag: Who is this year’s Boston Scott? - PhillyVoice
Question from Ryan: Who is the guy this year who has been around a while but is out of sight / out of mind who people aren’t projecting to make the roster, but who will actually play this season and maybe even have an impact, like Boston Scott a year ago? Ooh, I like that. You could also call it the Greg a-Ward. Boom. I’ll go with DE Joe Ostman. I haven’t read any other 53-man projections, but I feel like most writers would have him off of theirs? Do I have that right? Anyway, he was very clearly going to make the roster last year if he hadn’t torn his ACL, and I think the team still likes him. Couple that with the notion that the DE4 spot is essentially empty and there for the taking, and I can see Ostman not only making the team, but also earning snaps as part of that D-line rotation. [BLG Note: Jimmy wrote this before the Curry signing but Ostman still has a shot at the DE5 spot.]

Grading the move: Vinny Curry’s return signals Eagles’ lack of faith in DE depth - The Athletic
The Eagles finished 17th in adjusted sack rate last season, per Football Outsiders, thanks in part to an average season from their defensive ends. The only offseason addition made to that group before Curry was Toohill, a seventh-rounder. The addition of Javon Hargrave and the prospect of a healthy Jackson should have positive trickle-down effects on the edge. And maybe the Eagles think Matt Burke becoming defensive line coach will make a difference, too. But defensive end has been a potential problem area this offseason, and the justification that made the most sense for not addressing it earlier was that, as Jim Schwartz said about the team’s linebackers last week, at some point you have to let the kids play. Among Miller, Avery, Toohill and Ostman, surely one of those players could turn into an adequate fourth defensive end. That the Eagles are reportedly guaranteeing $1.3 million of Curry’s salary tells you they don’t think anyone from that group is up to the challenge.

2019 Slot vs Wide: Running Backs and Tight Ends - Football Outsiders
You may be surprised to see Zach Ertz finish with a negative DVOA in the slot. You may be more surprised to learn this is the second year in a row he has been in the negatives, slipping down from 7.4% to -2.3% to -4.3% over the past three seasons. Ertz has struggled more as a receiver recently; he failed to crack the top 20 in receiving DYAR this year for the first time in his career. My gut feeling is that that has more to do with injuries and struggles the Eagles have had at other receiving positions, allowing defenses to focus coverage more on Ertz, than anything else, but it’s worth noting.

Training Camp 2020: Meetings, walkthroughs, conditioning - PE.com
And it all starts with the mental reps. We’ve got another 10 days of them at the NovaCare Complex, which in past years would be bustling with the smell of football and heat and sweat and the promise of a regular season around the corner. That promise remains. The NFL is going to have a season (fingers crossed). How we get to that point, though, is something entirely new, which doesn’t mean it is the wrong way to conduct business. The downside is that we haven’t had a chance to see the new Eagles in uniform and offer hot takes on their progress. Is that really so bad? In the long run, no. What matters is how prepared the team is for Washington on September 13, and how they get to that point is what is so fascinating to observe, even from a distance.

NBC Sports Philadelphia is dying. Long live Comcast SportsNet. - Inquirer
The ruining of NBC Sports Philadelphia – the network probably still better known around here by its old name, Comcast SportsNet – is a story of corporate shortsightedness, missed opportunity, and a fundamental misunderstanding of Philadelphia sports fans. Once, the network was poised to become, by a wide margin, the dominant sports-media entity in the Philadelphia area. It could have owned the market. It is to its leaders’ and decision-makers’ shame that it doesn’t, and that its falloff has been so steep.

Breaking: DeAndre Baker formally charged with robbery - Big Blue View
New York Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker is being formally charged with four counts of robbery with a firearm according to Broward County State Attourney Mike Satz. Because Baker is being charged with robbery with a firearm, he faces a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison if convicted. If found guilty and sentenced to the fullest extent of the law, Baker could be sentenced to as much as life in prison.

NFL insider notes: Mike Tomlin, Steelers speak out on lack of diversity, Big Ben ready for rebirth and more - CBS Sports
Continue to hear from people I speak to from NFL teams that there is a very real sense within the league office about the Super Bowl being played before a full crowd. Obviously, the timing of a vaccine will be paramount but there is a real hope that will be the case, if not an expectation ... Also hearing more chatter about perhaps having to adapt to a bubble environment of some sort for the postseason, depending on how COVID-19 is impacting various parts of this country at that time. Several GMs have talked among themselves about it, and some football people think it could work. Whether that would end up being one bubble per conference or one for the entire playoffs is a topic of some debate. To be clear, there has been nothing formal at all from the league office about any sort of bubble whatsoever, but if something like that went down I don’t think teams would be shocked ...

We heard your comments feedback, here’s what we’re doing - SB Nation
It’s been five days since we began the first testing phase for our new commenting system on some of SB Nation’s NFL sites. As we’ve said elsewhere, this is the start of the journey, and we don’t have a timeline yet for the rest of the network beyond the 32 NFL sites. The feedback we gather from site managers, contributors, moderators, and community members as we keep improving the platform will help inform our rollout schedule from here. Commenters from across our network have been vocal in their feedback, for which we genuinely say thank you. We know we can continue to evolve this platform into the tool you deserve, and quickly. Thanks for helping us learn how. Here’s what we’ve learned so far, and what we’re doing about it.
