8 notes from today’s Eagles training camp practice

Takeaways from Tuesday’s session.

Today marked the eighth 2020 Philadelphia Eagles training camp practice open to media. Let’s get to what I saw.

PRACTICE NOTES

• Today’s practice was a walk-through so there were no pads or helmets. Carson Wentz and others were rocking their bucket hats. Notes are light today since there wasn’t much action to observe. In order to make up for that, I’ll be hosting a question and answer session here on BGN later today. Jimmy Kempski and I will also be answering some questions on today’s BGN Radio episode if you want to tweet one at us.

EAGLES INJURY UPDATE: Genard Avery left practice early on Monday and was listed out due to illness today. Jordan Mailata (upper body) and Vinny Curry (lower body) are being listed as day-to-day. That’s not good for Mailata’s stock; he needs all the reps he can get. Fletcher Cox and Malik Jackson had rest days today. Andre Dillard was taking reps at left tackle so maybe he’ll be back in full on Wednesday? Sidney Jones missed his sixth straight practice even though today was light. John Hightower and Anthony Rush returned after missing the last two days due to illness.

OVERVIEW

BACK AT PRACTICE

WR John Hightower (illness)
DT Anthony Rush (illness)

• Haven’t noticed many misses from Jake Elliott in camp so far but he did have a few today. Kicking with no field goal block team on the field, he went wide right from 46 and he hit another off the left upright from 45. Elliott hit the right upright from 48 with defenders on the field but it doinked in. Single doink, not double.

• The Eagles’ first team kickoff coverage unit consists of Rudy Ford, Duke Riley, T.J. Edwards, Corey Clement, K’Von Wallace, Shaun Bradley, Rodney McLeod, Nickell Robey-Coleman, Will Parks, Craig James, and Elliott. Everyone is a lock to make the roster from that group save for Ford and James. They’re bubble guys to watch. James should have the better chance from the two.

Quez Watkins was back deep for most of the kick return drills the Eagles were working on.

Nate Herbig was having some snapping issues while working at center. He got called out by the coaching staff a couple times for that. Jeff Stoutland refers to Herbig as “Herby.”

• You might be tempted to draft the Eagles’ punter in fantasy this year after watching this:

• New Eagles tight end Tyrone Swoopes was at practice today. He was getting an offensive and special teams crash course on the sideline from an Eagles assistant and fellow tight ends Noah Togiai and Caleb Wilson. Swoopes is wearing No. 48.

UP NEXT: The Eagles have another training camp practice tomorrow starting around 10:30 AM Eastern. It should be more active than today’s session but I don’t think they’ll be going live until Thursday. The Eagles will then have off on Friday. Reporters will get to watch practices on Saturday and Sunday before our access is cut off starting Monday, August 31. Stay tuned to BGN, as always.
