Eagles host Tyrone Swoopes on a visit

New entrant in the third tight end battle?

The Philadelphia Eagles hosted tight end Tyrone Swoopes on a free agent visit on Sunday, according to the NFL’s official transaction wire.

The Eagles seem bound to add another tight end body to the roster given that Josh Perkins is listed “out indefinitely” due to an upper body injury. Perhaps Swoopes will be that guy. Note that free agent visits aren’t meant to be about mere casual interest given the COVID-19 climate we live in these days.

Swoopes played quarterback at Texas before failing to get selected in the 2017 NFL Draft. He signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted rookie free agent and they moved him to tight end. Swoopes bounced on and off their roster for a couple years, as seen in his lengthy transaction history on Pro Football Reference:

Swoopes has two career regular season catches for 28 receiving yards in seven games played. He has 11 for 102 in the preseason.

Swoopes would clearly not be a serious threat to make the Eagles’ roster as much as he would be to help fill tight end reps in practice. Noah Togiai and Caleb Wilson are the in-house candidate pushing for the third tight end behind Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert with Perkins hurt.
