Even as someone who adheres to the world of the Philadelphia Eagles as if it were a religion (and maybe it actually is), I’ve struggled to get to my usual level of August excitement for the NFL season. There are obviously a lot of factors going on here. The COVID-19 pandemic casts a shadow over everything right now and it makes the prospects of a real NFL season murky. That means no preseason games to irrationally overreact to as well. The NBA and NHL playoffs are now taking place in August too, as the Flyers (positively) and Sixers (negatively) capture my attention.
Have I grown soft in my old age (of 26)? Well, I certainly hope not. The Eagles’ latest hype video, however, got me going again. From the Dick Vermeil voiceover to the big hits from Jeremiah Trotter, Hugh Douglas, Bill Bergey and more, I finally channeled that inner Weapon X berserker rage that all deranged Eagles fans possess within them. I was ready to get “Dallas Sucks” tattooed on my forehead. I was ready to scream, “E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLESSS” at the top of my lungs while drawing out that first “E” perfectly. I was ready to wake up on a Monday morning in total anguish after a devastating loss. I was ready for the pain the Eagles would inflict on both their opponents and my psyche.
