It’s video game week here at SB Nation so today’s Eagles Question of the Day asks: What is your favorite sports video game?
Some nostalgia that came to mind for me:
- ESPN NFL 2K5. I never actually played it because I didn’t have a PlayStation 2 or Xbox when it came out. But I loved me some Terrell Owens and I really liked how he was on the cover.
- Madden NFL 2004. The first Madden I ever played. Cover athlete Michael Vick was obviously really awesome in the game. I remember running a goal-line play where I had him run all the way back to his own end zone before outrunning the defense and scoring a touchdown. Just ridiculous stuff. I played a number of Madden versions after 2004 and obviously built the Eagles into annual Super Bowl champions through franchise mode.
- NHL 98. One of the first sports video games I ever played. Had this for my Windows PC and would play it with my dad. I really liked playing as the Buffalo Sabres because I liked their old black and red theme. Also used the Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils. Loved the commentary in that game. “STONED BY BRIND’AMOUR!” I also had some NBA game for my computer but I’m not perfectly sure what it is. I just remember shooting full court shots with John Stockton way too often. He’d make them sometimes!
- NFL Street. Just such a ridiculous game. But fun! Same could be said for NFL Blitz. Really enjoyed tackling the crap out of other players after the play was clearly over.
- MLB 06: The Show. I think I bought this game because I saw commercials for it while watching Smackdown. I rented it from Blockbuster first, as I did with a lot of games. Remember Blockbuster? Anyway, I used the New York Yankees a lot in this game because I liked Randy Johnson and the hitting lineup was stacked. I had Alex Rodriguez crushing records.
- Mario Kart. Yes, it counts. I mostly played the OG version for Nintendo 64 but I also have the most recent version for the Switch. I’m pretty basic so I usually go with Mario or Yoshi.
- FIFA. Arguably the best sports series there is. Just something about soccer that translates well to video game format.
- Non-sports video games: Too many to list here but I pretty much love all Zelda games, especially Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and Windwaker. I played all Pokemon games up until Crystal ... and then got Sword earlier this year. I love Lufia: The Legend Returns for Game Boy even though I feel like no one else played that game (please tell me if you did!). The Kingdom Hearts story-line is so confusing but I enjoy the series anyway.
- I don’t really play sports games anymore. Maybe I’ll be in the mood for them again one day but for now I mainly just stick to playing Warzone and Gun Game in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on PS4. Also still enjoy playing Overwatch.
