So ... is the 2020 NFL season actually going to happen?
Some U.S. states — like Pennsylvania — are seeing COVID-19 cases decrease as they begin to re-open. Others — like Texas — are seeing their numbers spike, though. And some active NFL players from the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans are among those testing positive for the coronavirus.
Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci remains skeptical about the feasibility of an NFL season taking place in the fall.
“Unless players are essentially in a bubble — insulated from the community and they are tested nearly every day — it would be very hard to see how football is able to be played this fall. If there is a second wave, which is certainly a possibility and which would be complicated by the predictable flu season, football may not happen this year.”
The NBA is planning on taking the ‘bubble’ approach at Disney World but the NFL doesn’t seem to have any kind of similar approach in place. The NFL recently released COVID-19 guidelines ahead of a full return to work when training camps are slated to begin in late July but teams adhering to team doesn’t seem incredibly realistic. There are a lot of people to be accounted for with 90 man rosters, coaching staffs, trainers, etc.
NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills responded to Dr. Fauci’s comments:

I don’t doubt that the NFL is trying their hardest to have a season. And maybe they’ll even get one off the ground. But who’s to say it won’t have to be paused or cancelled at some point even if it does? Hopefully that’s not the case. Just feels like a real murky outlook. I can’t say I have the utmost confidence. Hence, today’s Eagles Question of the Day ...
