As another week rolls along during the quarantine, so does the BGN Friday Night Watch Party. After seeing the Eagles obliterate Washington on Monday Night Football last week, it’s time to let our loyal readers yet again decide which game we’re going to watch this Friday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m. EST.
As a reminder:
The website we used to watch old games on YouTube is called Watch2Gether, where we can all do a live-running text thread discussing the game as the video plays. While there are a ton of old Birds games available to watch on YouTube, a lot of them are copyright-protected, meaning that we won’t be able to view them through Watch2Gether.
Here’s what we’re working with:
1988 Week 6 against the New York Giants
This is repeat from last week’s poll, but people were vocal about including it again. Here’s what I wrote then:
On Monday Night Football, Randall Cunningham became a phenom to a national television audience after his iconic red zone touchdown pass to Jimmie Giles, one of his three touchdown throws of the evening. The Birds defeated the Giants 24-13, as they built momentum for their first NFC East crown in eight years.
2001 Wild Card Round against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Facing Tampa Bay at home in the Wild Card Round for the second-consecutive postseason, the Birds pulled out a 31-9 victory. Just an eight-point game entering the fourth quarter, the Eagles were able to score two late touchdowns, including a 59-yard Pick 6 from Damion Moore, to secure a comfortable win.
2004 Week 8 against the Baltimore Ravens
On Halloween 2004, Philadelphia was at the peak of Terrell Owens mania. Against the second-best defense in the NFL according to DVOA, the Birds grinded towards a 15-10 win. Owens exploded with eight catches for 101 receiving yards and a touchdown, where he mocked Ray Lewis’ famous intro dance in the end zone afterwards. This victory put the Birds at 7-0 and solidified them as the top team in the NFC.
2006 Week 13 against the Carolina Panthers
Following Donovan McNabb’s season-ending ACL and meniscus tears, the Eagles’ season looked finished too. That’s before Jeff Garcia, our baby, guided the Birds to an unlikely playoff run. After losing his first start in Indianapolis, Garcia rebounded on Monday Night Football to kick off a five-game win streak to finish the year in this 27-24 victory.
Garcia threw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns during this fourth quarter comeback win, as the Birds trailed 24-17 heading into the final chunk of the game. Legendary Eagle Brian Dawkins recorded an interception in the game too, so I know we’d all be amped to see a great BDawk moment.
These watch parties have been a ton of fun and I’m looking forward to Friday!
