The post-Super Bowl lull in the NFL news cycle is over now that the Combine is here and free agency is right around the corner. The Philadelphia Eagles have already given us some stuff to talk about and there will only be more to discuss moving forward. Jimmy Kempski and I touched on a variety of these offseason topics in the latest BGN Radio podcast. You can [CLICK HERE TO PLAY] or stream our conversation below:
SHOW TOPICS
NIGEL BRADHAM IS GONE
Was releasing him the right call?
What are the chances he re-signs with Philly?
Jimmy and I give our top three free agent linebacker options. Also, an interesting note on one of them:
Jimmy on Cory Littleton: “He’s an awesome player. And I have reason to believe Howie [Roseman] very much likes him.”
RANKING THE EAGLES’ TOP FIVE FREE AGENCY NEEDS
Here my rankings. You can listen to the podcast for Jimmy’s side of things.
1) Starting caliber wide receiver. The Eagles are likely moving forward without Nelson Agholor and Alshon Jeffery. That leaves ... DeSean Jackson, Greg Ward, and JJ Arcega-Whiteside as the top three receivers on the depth chart. The team will obviously pick up a receiver or two (or three?) in the 2020 NFL Draft but they need to sign at least one proven starter.
2) At least one starting cornerback. The guess here is the Eagles re-sign Jalen Mills. If they don’t, though, they’ll obviously need two starting corners. They can’t go into the 2020 NFL Draft expecting to find an immediate starter at corner.
3) Starting safety. The feeling here is that Rodney McLeod won’t be re-signed. He was culpable in a number of big plays the Eagles gave up in 2019. The Eagles need to get younger on the back end.
4) Starting linebacker. Obvious hole to fill with Bradham gone.
5) Backup quarterback. Who’s the guy behind Carson Wentz in 2020? Can Josh McCown’s body really handle another season? Is Nate Sudfeld ready? Some of the speculated Eagles quarterback options just don’t make sense, so, who IS the right fit?
ALSHON JEFFERY’S FUTURE
Thoughts on the report that the Eagles are “looking to move” Jeffery.
Why did the Eagles guarantee Jeffery’s guarantee for 2020 if they knew he was behind the leaks in 2018?
Jeffery’s complicated legacy and how concerns about him in 2017 free agency have come to fruition.
NFL COMBINE TIME
Wide receiver and cornerback prospects of interest.
Justin Jefferson for the Eagles at No. 21?
The need for speed and how it’s hard to be fired up about who the Eagles add at receiver if they don’t add a burner at some point.
Jimmy tells a story about how Howie Roseman (almost?) ruined his relationship with his girlfriend.
Final thoughts and more!
