So, let's talk about this year's draft

Hey all,

Now that the Eagles have embarrassed themselves through the 2020 season (except for next week's meaningless game against WFT), let's take a look at some of the interesting factoids involving their draft position.

I broke their draft position down in groups of five. Then I went back 28 years and totaled the number of picks in that group just to provide some historical context to our current (soon to be) draft position. Here's the scoop. In the past 28 years, here's how the Eagles have drafted: Pick 1-5 4

Pick 6-10 2

Pick 11-15 8

Pick 16-20 4

Pick 21-25 7

Pick 26-32 3

The thing that jumped out to me right away was that 19 of the 28 picks were in the 11-25 range. That means we've been an average to pretty good team for most of those years. Only once did we pick #2 based on our record. That got us McNabb in 1999. Picking Wentz at #2 doesn't really count because that pick was acquired via trade and negotiation, not record. We grabbed Lane Johnson at #4 in '13 and the overhyped Corey Simon with pick 6 in 2000. The only other picks in the top 10 were tackle Antone Davis at #8 in 1991 and the ultra-infamous Mike Mamula at #7 in 1995.

So where does that leave us today? Our exact pick is not yet known. Once the games are over next week we'll know for sure, but we will be at least #7 and hopefully higher. There is a very slim possibility that we could rise as high as #3 but that is very unlikely.

Of course, the next part of our discussions will center around what position should be given the #1 priority for that pick. I'm sure some of you would even be willing to draft another QB. After watching that Dallas game where a backup QB torched our secondary for how many big plays, I would hope the secondary will get some first or second round consideration. I sure would like to see Patrick Surtain in Eagles green. If OT Sewell from Oregon is still available, that would be a no-brainer as well. I have already seen mocks that have us taking Ja'Marr Chase the WR from LSU. Maybe he can be the Justin Jefferson we missed on this year. With him, Raegor and the other young guys we could have the best young receiving corps in the league.

Anyway, this is just a little primer to get the dialogue going for the next (ugghh) four months until we get to the draft. Have a great New Years. See you on other side.
