Eagles sign cornerback with starting experience to practice squad

More CB depth.

NFL: OCT 12 Eagles at Panthers

The Philadelphia Eagles officially signed free agent cornerback Kevon Seymour to their practice squad on Wednesday afternoon.

Seymour, 26, has some starting experience in the NFL. The 2016 sixth-round pick logged three starts in 15 games with the Buffalo Bills as a rookie. He started two games with the Carolina Panthers in 2017 and hasn’t appeared in a regular season game since.

Seymour spent the 2018 season on injured reserve and then got released by the Panthers during roster cuts ahead of the 2019 season.

The Eagles currently only have four full-time cornerbacks on their roster: Darius Slay, Avonte Maddox, Nickell Robey-Coleman, and Michael Jacquet. Adding Seymour to the practice squad gives them another game-ready option in case of injury/emergency.

If it comes to that, though, one would hope the Eagles would play someone with more potential upside like Jacquet instead of Seymour. The team should clearly be prioritizing long-term upside over short-term competency at this point. On that note, it’s at least a little frustrating — not the end of the world, no, but annoying — that the Eagles are now using six of their 16 practice squad spots on players aged 26 or older. Not exactly maximizing their spots on developmental players.

The Eagles still have one practice squad vacancy. They might look to fill that by activating Deontay Burnett from the practice squad COVID-19 list.
