The Philadelphia Eagles placed linebacker T.J. Edwards and safety/special teams contributor Rudy Ford on injured reserve, according to an official announcement from the team.
This news was expected since Doug Pederson said both players were expected to “miss some time” after getting hurt in the Eagles’ Week 4 win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Losing Edwards hurts an Eagles linebackers corps that already isn’t in great shape. Nathan Gerry and Duke Riley have struggled this season and we could see even more of them with Edwards out. On the plus side, we could also see more Alex Singleton, who made some plays in Sunday’s game. Edwards’ absence also hurts the Eagles’ special teams unit.
Speaking of special teams, losing Ford specifically hurts the Eagles’ punt coverage. He’s been really effective as a gunner. It also doesn’t help that the Eagles are looking thin at safety with Rodney McLeod hurt, Jalen Mills having to move back to cornerback, Will Parks on injured reserve, and Marcus Epps also limited in practice.
It’s unclear exactly how long Edwards and Ford will be out but they’ll be eligible to be activated to the 53-man roster after missing the Eagles’ next three games.
The Eagles now have two open roster spots to fill before Sunday’s game. They could look to activate two of the following three players from IR: Craig James, Vinny Curry, Quez Watkins.
In other news, the Eagles re-signed undrafted rookie free agent linebacker Dante Olson to their practice squad. He spent time with the team in training camp and give them more linebacker depth with Edwards going on IR. You can [CLICK HERE] to read more about Olson’s background.
