The Philadelphia Eagles activated Quez Watkins’ 21-day practice window earlier this week but he’s not going to play in Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. John Clark reports Watkins still “needs another week or two” as he recovers from a hamstring injury he suffered back in training camp.
The Eagles really could’ve used the speedy Watkins back since they’re dangerously thin at wide receiver. With DeSean Jackson (out), Alshon Jeffery (out), and J.J. Arcega-Whiteside (doubtful) unlikely to play in Week 4, the Eagles are down to just two healthy receivers on the roster: Greg Ward and John Hightower.
Less than ideal.
The Eagles did sign Hakeem Butler off the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad earlier this week. They’re listing him at tight end but he obviously has receiver experience.
The team could also look to elevate both Deontay Burnett and Travis Fulgham from the practice squad after designating them as protected players on Tuesday.
So, here’s how Carson Wentz’s receiving corps is shaping up for the Eagles’ appearance on Sunday Night Football (career stats next to name):
Greg Ward — 59 targets, 42 recs, 362 yards (8.6 average), 2 TD
John Hightower — 7 targets, 3 recs, 17 yards, 0 TD
Deontay Burnett — 23 targets, 15 recs, 210 yards (14.0 average), 0 TD
Travis Fulgham — 0 targets
Hakeem Butler — 0 targets
This is probably fine.
