The Eagles are down to being 9.5-point underdogs in this matchup.
It’s not incredibly difficult to envision how this one could go poorly for the Birds. (The midnight green Birds, that is.) The Eagles’ fifth different starting offensive line combination in six games could struggle to handle the Ravens’ blitzing. Carson Wentz could look more like the player he did earlier in the season than he did last week. Philly’s defense could get shredded by 2019 NFL MVP Lamar Jackson and company.
I’m not so sure the Eagles are as doomed as they might appear to be on paper, though. There’s some reason to be encouraged about Wentz and the Eagles’ offense as a whole after their last two games. Travis Fulgham could be the real deal. This unit might be able to do just enough to outpace to Ravens.
That is, of course, if Jim Schwartz’s unit can turn in a strong day. And I do think that’s possible. Jackson isn’t exactly lighting the world on fire right now. The Ravens want to run the ball a lot and the Eagles are typically prepared to shut down those kind of attacks.
With that in mind, I think this will be something of a narrative-flipping game following last week’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Eagles’ defense will play better. Zach Ertz will rebound after only having 15 receiving yards in his last two starts.
Call me foolish for believing in the Eagles’ ability to keep this one close but I think it can be done. Maybe they can even eke out a win in an ugly game. I just don’t think they’ll totally roll over in their first game in front of home fans at the Linc.
