For film nerds and self-proclaimed “grinders”, there’s nothing quite like having fresh coaches tape to break down. And now that the season is officially underway, me and Benjamin Solak finally get to do our favorite part of the job.
Having analyzed both sides of the ball from all angles, we got together to talk about the Philadelphia Eagles’ Week 1 win over Washington on The Kist & Solak Show #116! Below are some of the main talking points from the show.
- Third Down Carson is back! 12-for-13, 197 yards, 3 touchdowns and a perfect QB rating. He was also one of three quarterbacks with perfect passer ratings when under pressure.
- DeSean Jackson from the slot is a nightmare for defenses. The Eagles aligned him there for 48% of their passing plays and he rewarded them with 5 receptions, 119 yards and two touchdowns. Think of it this way.. whenever Jackson lined up in the slot, he gained nearly 8 yards per route.
- The offensive line played lights out after some early hiccups in the run game. Jason Peters and Brandon Brooks didn’t surrender a single pressure on 72 combined snaps. Lane Johnson held up well against his nemesis Ryan Kerrigan, even dropping for a pancake at one point which is unfamiliar territory for Kerrigan. All of them played well... except Halapoulivaati Vaitai, whose switch to guard in relief duty of Brooks went poorly despite very good offensive results when he was in.
- Today, Jim Schwartz asked his defensive backs to cover better and criticized the pass rush. Both are warranted, but that blame rests on his shoulders. Schwartz had confusing coverage deployments that worked against the skill sets of the players he had on the field.
For instance, having everybody but Rasul Douglas press on a 3rd & 5 where Douglas gave up a first down on a curl. Or asking Douglas to make a half-turn on a bail technique with no safety help, which ended in a 69-yard touchdown strike to Terry McLaurin.
The defensive backs have to cover better. Absolutely. Schwartz has to do a better job of putting them in positions to succeed. Both can be true.

(Correction from the show: Jaguars don’t play the Eagles this year. I glanced at the ‘18 schedule. Roast me; I deserve your scorn.)
