Unlike the regular season, the NFL doesn’t require teams to officially put out inactive lists for preseason games. So, here’s an unofficial look at which Philadelphia Eagles players won’t be playing against the Tennessee Titans on Thursday evening.
The following players are not suited up for game action: Carson Wentz, DeSean Jackson, Jason Peters, Brandon Brooks, Lane Johnson, Fletcher Cox, Ronald Darby, Jalen Mills, Darren Sproles, Corey Clement, Richard Rodgers, Mack Hollins, Boston Scott ... and others to be further clarified here.
Wentz is obviously the big name from that group. Doug Pederson was previously noncommittal about playing him and the starting offense. Wentz also downplayed the idea that he absolutely needs to play in the preseason earlier this week.
Wentz being inactive means Nate Sudfeld will get the start at quarterback. It’s a big night for Sudfeld as he tries to prove he can be a quality backup to Wentz. Cody Kessler and Clayton Thorson are the other active quarterbacks for tonight’s game.
Resting Wentz is the right call by the Eagles. Their season is essentially over if he gets hurt so there’s no need to risk him getting hurt in the first preseason game.
With that said, we might see Wentz take some preseason snaps next week when the Eagles travel down to Jacksonville to play the Jaguars. Carson Wentz versus Nick Foles, anyone?
