Zzzzzz.

The Philadelphia Eagles played the New York Jets in a meaningless fourth preseason game on Thursday night. The final score: Jets 6, Eagles 0. Read on for game observations, I guess!

The quarterbacks

Clayton Thorson — 12/26 (46.2%), 84 yards (3.4 average), 0 TD, 1 INT, 38.5 passer rating

Cody Kessler — DID NOT PLAY

First half observations

Clayton Thorson gets the start at quarterback. The starting offensive line from left to right: Matt Pryor, Sua Opeta, Nate Herbig, Keegan Render, Brett Toth. Wendell Smallwood is the first running back getting multiple touches.

Daeshon Hall already generating pressure on the Jets’ first pass attempt. Hassan Ridgeway logs a sack on a stunt.

Josh Hawkins looking bad in coverage and against the run. Remember when the Eagles were forced to play him against the Saints?!

Greg Ward takes a sweep for 15 yards. Continues to look good on offense.

Joshua Perkins with a nice wham block to spring an 18-yard Smallwood run. And then Smallwood fumbles. There goes any trade value.

Aaaand Thorson is picked off on a throw towards the sideline. Jets cornerback jumps the route with Thorson staring his receiver down.

Alex Singleton puts a BIG hit on Jets quarterback Luke Falk.

Trae Elston with another special teams tackle. Doesn’t feel like he’ll beat out Johnathan Cyprien, who is resting tonight. But I feel like Elston’s shown up more than Cyprien.

Daeshon Hall logs his THIRD strip sack of the preseason. What more does he need to show this team? He’s a beast.

Singleton and Alex Ellis combine for a tackling effort on punt coverage. Important for those kind of bubble guys to stand out in this way.

Second half observations

The Eagles begin the second half with punter Cameron Johnston doing a drop kick (!) instead of Jake Elliott kicking off. Guessing this is the coaching staff experimenting?

Kevin Wilkins is having an active night. Maybe he makes the practice squad.

Thorson woefully overthrows a wide open Boston Scott in the flat. Woof. Responds with a throw to a diving Alex Ellis for a first down. That’s better.

Hey, Josh Hawkins with a pick! On a terrible throw.

Ellis makes a cool one-handed catch on a bad overthrow from Thorson.

Bottom of the roster guys making some plays! Safety Jason Thompson with a nice punch to create a forced fumble. Singleton recovers but it’s ruled he was out of bounds so it’s still Jets ball. That is, until linebacker Chris Worley picks off Davis Webb! The excitement!

Thorson with a throw behind DeAndre Thompkins on 4th-and-11. Thorson’s looking real bad again!

Injuries

Daeshon Hall got banged up early in the game but he’s fine.

Aziz Shittu got carted off the field.

Up next: NFL roster cuts

No more training camp. No more preseason games. The 2019 NFL regular season schedule officially begins in ONE WEEK. The Eagles open their season against Washington on Sunday, September 8!

Before that arrives, however, the Eagles (and 31 other NFL teams) are required to trim their roster down to the 53-player limit by Saturday, August 31 at 4:00 PM ET. Cuts are expected to take place as soon as Friday morning, so stay tuned here to Bleeding Green Nation for complete coverage!
