The Philadelphia Eagles are one of at least five NFL teams the Houston Texans have reached out to regarding a potential Jadeveon Clowney trade, according to a report from the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson.
Although the Dolphins are regarded widely in NFL circles as a frontrunner to land Clowney with Miami general manager Chris Grier talking with him weeks ago in advance of his visit last weekend, should he agree to report and sign his $15.967 million tender, they’re not the only viable destination. The Texans have worked the phones and have reached out to multiple teams about a potential trade for the former top overall pick from South Carolina, including two of his preferred teams: the Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles, according to league sources not authorized to speak publicly. Other NFL teams the Texans are known to have spoken with, per sources, include Washington and the New York Jets.
Nothing has advanced with any of those teams, though.
This report doesn’t come as a surprise following the news from earlier this week that the Eagles are said to be one of Clowney’s preferred landing spots.
That the Texans are the side reaching out to teams — and not the other way around — shows they’re not operating from a position of strength. (Shocking for a team without a real general manager, huh?) This development suggests the price on Clowney might not be as exorbitant as previously thought.
Of course, the Chronicle’s report notes that “nothing has advanced” with the teams the Texans have spoken with. So, it hardly seems like a deal is imminent. The Texans have clearly passed on any offers have come their way to this point. Houston seems desperate to create a competitive market for Clowney so they can get some better terms thrown their way.
I still don’t think the Eagles are likely to land Clowney. I’d say there’s like a 10% chance of it happening and that percentage is influenced by the fact that it’s hard to entirely count out Howie Roseman.
But now we know the Eagles and Texans have talked, at least. Maybe that dialogues picks up again and the two sides get a deal done. Or maybe it’s another team that makes the best offer for Clowney, which is the scenario I expect to happen.
