Report: Army offensive tackle is hoping to sign with the Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles are interested in adding another offensive tackle to their roster. NFL insider Adam Schefter reports that the Eagles have offered a contract to Army offensive tackle Brett Toth.

Toth isn’t able sign that deal just yet, though. Due to a two-year service requirement policy, Toth must receive a waiver from senior Army leadership that would allow him to play for the Eagles. Toth, who was eligible for the 2018 NFL Draft, has only served one of his two required years to this point.

So, for now, Toth and the Eagles are waiting on the Army’s decision.

If Toth’s waiver request is denied, he’ll be required to serve in the Army for at least one more year before trying to pursue an NFL career.

If Toth’s waiver request is accepted, he’ll be able to join the Eagles’ 90-man offseason roster and compete for a spot on the team.

The Eagles already have a lot of depth at offensive tackle with Jason Peters, Lane Johnson, Andre Dillard, Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Jordan Mailata, and Matt Pryor under contract. But with Johnson missing the rest of the preseason due to injury and the Eagles recently trading Ryan Bates to Buffalo, there are some practice and preseason reps to fill at tackle. One also can’t rule out the possibility of another lineman (Big V?) getting traded.

Toth’s realistic best case scenario — assuming he’s cleared to sign with the Eagles — is probably ending up on Philadelphia’s practice squad. But that’s still a solid gig for someone like Toth looking to start his NFL career.

Toth’s physicality and ability as a move blocker will appeal to zone-heavy rushing attacks, but it will take some time to adjust to a run scheme where he isn’t constantly playing so far forward like he was at Army. Toth is an athletic guard/tackle prospect who will likely need a redshirt season to add mass and work on his fundamentals in pass protection.
