The 2019 Women’s World Cup began late last week but the United States women’s national soccer team hasn’t played yet. That changes today as their first game is against Thailand starting at 3:00 PM ET on FOX.
If you’re wondering why a Philadelphia Eagles blog is posting about women’s soccer, well, allow me to explain.
1) A majority of Bleeding Green Nation’s readership is compromised of Americans (duh). So, you know, go USA.
2) Beyond being patriotic, Eagles fans should care about the USWNT because there are some noteworthy ties on the squad. The obvious one is that midfielder Julie Ertz (pictured above this article) is the wife of Eagles tight end Zach Ertz. The other one is that midfielder Carli Lloyd — who scored three goals in 15 minutes en route to the USWNT’s World Cup Final win back in 2015 — is a big Eagles fan. (Lloyd is a native of Delran, New Jersey.)
So, here’s to hoping the USWNT makes America proud by repeating as Women’s World Cup champions!
Feel free to follow along with the game here in the comments of this open thread.
