Report: Eagles “pretty likely” to play Vikings on Thanksgiving in 2019

NFL: NFC Championship-Minnesota Vikings at Philadelphia Eagles Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The 2019 NFL schedule won’t be officially unveiled until mid-April but it sounds like we might already have a schedule leak. The Star Tribune recently pointed out an interesting note from the Sports Illustrated Media Podcast (hat tip to our friends over at Daily Norseman).

Here’s an interesting nugget from the SI media podcast that was posted on Wednesday: Host Jimmy Traina and guest John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal were talking about the NFL schedule and specifically Thanksgiving games, when Traina asked Ourand about the nightcap finale of the three-game slate. “I didn’t actually write about this but I have head that Minnesota vs. Philadelphia is one that’s in play,” Ourand said around the 32 minute mark, adding later: “It’s not dead set, but I’m told that it’s pretty likely.”

Eagles versus Vikings on Thanksgiving night could be pretty fun. According to recent reports, the entire 2019 Thanksgiving slate could look something like this:

12:30 PM ET — Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions

4:30 PM ET — Miami Dolphins at Dallas Cowboys

8:20 PM ET — Philadelphia Eagles at Minnesota Vikings

Philadelphia has pretty much dominated Minnesota since the 2016 season. Here’s what that’s looked like:

  • The Eagles traded Sam Bradford to Minnesota for first-round (Derek Barnett) and fourth-round picks (Josh Sweat).
  • The Eagles sacked Sammy Sleeves six times in a 21-10 win, which ruined the Vikings’ 5-0 record.
  • Vikings GM Rick Spielman had to watch as the Eagles won a coin flip to pick No. 14 instead of No. 15 in the 2017 NFL Draft.
  • Alshon Jeffery took less money to join the Eagles because he wanted to play with Carson Wentz instead of Sam Bradford.
  • The Eagles embarrassed the Vikings in the 2018 NFC Championship Game, 38-7.
  • Vikings fans embarrassed themselves by being so salty about the Eagles beating them.
  • The Eagles won the Super Bowl at the Vikings’ home stadium.
  • The Eagles lost to the Vikings in Week 5 during the 2018 season, yes, but that ultimately just set up an epic Week 17 choke job that saw the Vikings miss out on the playoffs entirely.

It’d be pretty sweet for the Eagles’ first game back at U.S. Bank Stadium since winning Super Bowl LII be a big win over the Vikings in a nationally televised game.

Now, this report should probably be taken with a grain of salt. Last year around this time it was reported that the Eagles would be hosting Minnesota in Philly’s Week 1 home opener and that didn’t actually happen.

For now, it’s a possibility to keep an eye on.

The Eagles last played on Thanksgiving in 2015, when they suffered a blowout loss to the Lions in Detroit. The Eagles beat the Cowboys in Dallas on Thanksgiving in 2014.
